Nope! this is an African Cichlid tank. You can do it as easily as the one you have now! :) Cichlids are about the most colorful that you can get w/out saltwater. Now mind you I do have to throw a couple of table spoons of aquarium salt in there, but the chemistry isn't such an exact science as a marine setup. You can get baby chichlids for $3-$5 a piece, and they morph colors a ton as they grow! They're very hardy fish (adapt to variable water conditions).
The Basic setup:
VERY GOOD filtration
82 degree heat
Air stone to help water oxidation
small amount of Aquarium salt
and a PH buffer chemical which is WAY less expensive than maintaining salt.

oh wow there you go!!! For some reason that variety of fish is more expensive in Aus (unless I just go to rip off pet stores lol) that sounds like something I could manage though!! I already have to have a heater for my tropicals so yeah I have most of the set up you mentioned. How often do you have to add salt? They are beautiful :)

Thanks Megabee! Just a couple of tablespoons worth every water change. This are the only things I use in my aquarium.

Prime to de-chloronate the water and remove waste ammonia
The PH buffer
And common aquarium salt.
Hope I'm not boring anyone yet :)

Yours is starting to sound less complicated hahaha! I love fish/aquariums so you are not boring me, nothing is more relaxing after a full on day at work than to come home and vape and watch my fish lol!

Not boring me, either. Other people want big houses or exotic sports cars if they suddenly become rich--Me, I want a big saltwater aquarium, with the maintenance thrown in.

LOL! Seriously, you and me both!
One more thing, Mega, Get that Prime if ya can, it does EVERYTHING! Ammonia, stress coat, and the dechloronater

I've never had luck with fish, myself. As a child, I killed every goldfish I won at the fair. Last one was a beta fish that I owned. Kept it in the bathroom so the cats couldn't eat it. Forgot the bathroom could be the hottest room in the house during the summer and found the fish floating at the top of the tank one day. :(

I live in earthquake country. Having a large aquarium is something I don't want to risk. I had a goldfish once, that I won at the fair. He committed suicide - jumped out of his bowl :( Guess I didn't take proper care and he couldn't handle it anymore. I feel bad :(

oh how sad... my poor mum woke up to floating fish.... I didnt have the heart to tell her until i was 15years old the real story... at the age of 5 , I wanted pets i could play with and hug, so every morning while mum slept ( she has always worked night shift) i would go to the kitchen , get a chair and place myself next to the tank, and one by one take out the fishes and put them on the counter.... play with them and put them back in the tank before she woke up.... poor fishies....... i guess it wasnt as bad as my brother who tried to make a bonfire under her bed while she was sleeping...
I finally found a picture of my fishy that i lost :(
