I don't think that the wire would be close enough to the glass to transfer the heat properly. Remember how we need to wrap the coil tightly to the glass?

If the Tube #OD is thin enough then all you have to do to get the wire tight is pull on both ends of the wire with a little wiggling it will tighten up the slack. Of course thicker wire will be stiffer and will hold the shape better than a thin wire. The problem I see it how can we get it to stabilize itself if you where to drop or bump the mod.

Yeah...that would only be something like .010" gap inside the tube depending on wire guage. So how would that work? Would you just thread the wire into the coiled tube to replace the coil? Man, that would be so easy if it worked!
Yeah the ease of maint. would be nice. Just have to pull the ss wick out if you need or wanted too change the wick. If you need to change the wire just disconnect the wires and pull on one end. If it is stuck use a small pipe cleaner rod with the cleaning pad and push it through. *I have one that flexes and bends so I know it should work.*

I think a thick gauge to match ID would work

Coiled FQ with a single wire match to the ID sounds interesting. Here is a calculator for determining Nichrome wire temperature.

NichromeCalc

It may be helpful for determining power levels to keep wire operating temperature below stress points for fused quartz.

EDIT:
For example a 2.2 ohm 6 coil wrap (3.3 outer coil diameter) of 32g would be ~2.45 inches of wire.
For 2.49 inches:
Nichrome temp at 3.7v is 1260F/682C
Nichrome temp at 6.0v is 1960F/1071C

I think you'd have to keep it a fairly loose slip fit to be able to feed the wire in by hand, especially since it's a coiled tube. It might be about right for 28 or 30 at .5mm I.D. (that leaves only around .008 - .009 inch clearance). Maybe it could be some tighter, but you wouldn't want a press fit.

EDIT: Just thinking it's hard to say what diameter would work without trying...I guess http://www.precisionglassblowing.com/custom-coils/ would have all the know-how if anyone wants to take it far enough to fill out their contact form.

I filled out the info and emailed them. I also sent a few emails out to some other quartz spiral tube makers that I know from work. I will post when I hear back from them.

So I thought i was hosed for the weekend and was working on my 3 chamber design, then the mail man showed up my tinfoil (PGS) and then fedx with my wilmad 2.5mm and 3mm tube.

PGS...yes its conductive like everyone told me.....but here is a video with a quickly built and oxidized (~4 cycles of flame and dunk in water) coil.

The PGS isn't at how I thought it would be its just kind of rolled/wadded up and stuck inside a coil.

Sorry had some issues with a pile of a VV battery.

The syringe is water the bottle is juice

Thoughts?

****sorry having technical difficulties with embedding the you tube video

Update:

Everything is snapped and inspected/cleaned up to the best of my ability. There will be a tiny bit more product coming than originally planned. I was hoping to get these out today, but got caught up in a few 'honey-do' things. These will go out Monday for sure. If anyone wants in, speak your peace now. I have a solid 2 feet left by design. Contact me via PM if you want length. I hope to have a chance tonight to play a bit with it. I've been chomping at the bit. Thanks for being patient y'all.

Teaser pic.....The ceramic better be worth it.....what a pita!.....Thats a 2mm shaft, 2.5x2.2 pyrex tube, coil, modified sand blaster ceramic tip from harbor freight.

Keeping track of the little glass tube is kicking my .... :)

Can you provide a bigger pic? This one is pretty tiny on the screen. Sounds interesting.

No, thank YOU for taking the time and energy to allow more of us to test this great idea!

Thanks TB I'm looking forward to trying this method out.

Lesson learned with inner coil/outer tube 2mm OD Pyrex. Don't dry fire. Melted the naked glass in a couple of seconds.

Now to build another PIA coil and this time wrap in mesh and juice.

Wow! was it sealed? I don't have time to go back to your source link if there was one but it sounds like you got soft glass. Sorry bud-better luck with the next try.

Damn! Thats with those tiny capillary tubs right? Whats the wall thickness on them like .5mm

-update with enamel-
I cant seem to get an even coat on a coil, admittedly i dont have any real experience enamel to begin with. It does a nice job of insulating the wire from the mesh in the spots i do get enameled and the wire is still semi flexible (mostly because i dont think i put a thick enough coat on it). I have been making the coils on a small bolt, using the threads as a guide to make a nice even spaced coil. Its tricky to heat the coil with a torch enough to do the enameling but not to much to ruin the wire. Ill move on to trying to do the OD of a mesh wick tomorrow
