LucidAce, it is indeed along the side of the bottle... separating the bottle and the wall of the battery area. You could prolly use almost anything that would cushion/stabilize it a bit.
Glad you discovered the seal and the problem with the threads on the "bad" bottle! Your test of putting a cap on it (off and outside of the VMOD) then squeezing it to check for leaks should be underlined for all current and future VMODians. Good job!
As far as tightening goes, I think I mentioned that I use an O ring at the bottle neck for a dab of more stability. I also think that with ALL things e cig vaporizing, finger tightening is always the way to go. Just tighten til it stops. It doesn't have to be screwed in massively (over-tightened). Less worry about what you see in terms of the threads, and more attention to the feel of it. You'll find your bottle tightening sweet spot!
