Any to avoid until one is well on the way to mixing up 10x 1ml samples just to find the right spot?

Any other tips/tricks that you learned a couple of weeks into DIY that you wish you knew when you started?

...
citrus/cinnamon - plastic crackers

Good list of things to know.

Personally, I'd think 1ml is too small unless you've got really tiny syringes. I usually sample at 5ml at least - some flavors are used at as little as 1% or lower. Of course, there's another way to go about that too: if it's something you should use at very low % (say some cinnamon red hots or TPA black sesame) pre-dilute some of it to a 50% or even 10% strength in your preferred base (sans nic) before adding to your recipe.

Another tip is to be patient and give things time (not my forte :p). This is another reason I like to make >1ml even starting out - it provides more opportunity to sample it over a period of time to see how it may change.

While you don't have to thin VG to draw it into a syringe, you may certainly need to depending on what your atties/cartos can handle. You can always start without it and add water as you go. Be sure to keep your VG capped when you are not dispensing it - it absorbs water from the air like you wouldn't believe.

Finally: take notes! Be sure you know exactly what you have done with each mix so when you hit that winner, you can make a nice big stash of it.

Good luck!

ETA: Forgot I wanted to mention two other things:
I may not have a good list of common things, but I do see a lot of vanilla, caramel, cream of some sort (or even marshmallow), and a sweetener (i.e. sucralose).
Also "cinnamon/citrus cracks a tank" makes a good short version of the rule, but there are many exceptions; be sure to hunt out the longer list(s) here if you often use tanks.

I use PG to get the mixture the consistency I want. I've screwed up using water by following bad advice.
I use 80VG/20PG for attys. I don't care for throat hit so that doesn't factor into what I do.
I use 70VG/30PG for my carto tanks. It is a good viscosity, IMO. What I look for in DIY is 1. taste and 2. LOTS of vapor and 3. NO throat hit.

Yeah, I haven't had any problems with 100% VG in my devices yet, just a generic just-in-case sorta thing. I can see myself geeking out and making 1x,2x,3x,4x strength 1ml batches and blind testing them over a week. I've got the protocol down to where it would be really easy to make 1,2,3,4% or 2,4,6,8% with just a couple 1ml syringes and vials. And my tiny droppers are .2ml and perfectly fill my Phoenix RBA for a vape session. But there's plenty of mixing up EM&Mentol solutions, cutting nic base, and trying a few drop-at-a-time simple mixes to just get a taste of flavor before I'll try anything fancy. :)

Sadly WL is Out of Stock of some of the glassware I had on my list and a couple of other things I would have added, guess that just means there will be another shopping opportunity sometime.

Well there ya go - my smallest syringe is 1ml, so there's my measuring limitation :)

The polypropylene deserves a look if it's in - it's non-wetting properties make it great for VG especially (the VG doesn't "stick" so much in them).

Just have to post another great feedback on John's service. I have ordered from WL several times. I have never had a reason to connect with John. This order I had a small problem and just left a short note on my order. Within no time I received a personal email about my order from John. When I received my order today I found the item that I really needed had been included. I swear I get more enjoyment out of opening my Wizard Lab packages. With most company's customer service non existent it really makes me feel like Wizard Labs really does care about their customers. Thanks again John for another perfect order!

I am new to DIY and looked around for awhile trying to decide where to order from. After some suggestions and reading a bunch of great reviews I decided to order from Wizard Labs. I took a couple days looking over their site before I ordered. I had a couple questions about some flavors and didn't know if he would be able to answer them as I know he doesn't actually make them, but I thought I would see. I sent an email to him through the contact us section of the website. That was last Tuesday and I still haven't heard anything. I went ahead and placed an order on Wednesday. I immediately received the emails stating they had received my order and it would be shipped in 24-48 hours. It's been just over 48 hours and I still haven't received an email stating my order has been shipped. I was going to send an email inquiring about my order, but I didn't know if it would do any good, seeing as my last email still hasn't been responded to. I'm hoping it gets shipped out soon!!! I'm so excited to get started making my own liquid.

I'm not upset...yet. I understand stuff happens, I just hope I hear something soon!

This isn't anything like the service I have received. I live in Louisiana so it's not too distant from Florida, but I always receive my order within 4 days of placing it.. usually 3.

sometimes John gets reallllly backed up... he asks to allow 2-3 business days for an email response. But i have to admit, ive been to "The Lab" and its true the Wizard gets preeeeeettty busy.. but on the other hand.. you can always call him, he usually answers but if he doesnt he usually calls right back or he will call you back soon enough.. they have great customer service over at WL. its one of the 3 places i go to for flavoring, and the ONLY place i order from for my Nic. i wish he had FA, CAP, and FW flavors but i know he will eventually..

On the site:

SHIPPING DELAY NOTICE: Our shipping service, Stamps.com, had their servers go down this morning and we couldn't regain connection until early this evening. This caused all of Friday's shipments to be delayed by one business day. We apologize for the inconvenience and will be working Saturday morning to ship all of the delayed orders.

Just poppin' in to say, you're the man, John!

Got my package today, and I am quite excited that you through in a sample of that Blueberry extra :) Next time I open the laboratory (yes, that's what I call my hutch) I will mix a batch up. In fact, I have been enjoying this Black Honey Tobacco so much, I might make a blend of blueberry black...Mmmm.

Thanks again, my friend.

TFA Blueberry Extra is a great flavoring. Try a little Raspberry with it

I have no raspberry available, unfortunately.

For fruits, I just have apple, orange cream, dragonfruit, raisin, banana nut bread, and of course, blueberry. I wonder what orange cream and blueberry would be like?

Orange Cream is great! I've tried it. I think apple, raisen and particularly dragonfruit would be super too.
