this place now needs at least eight moderators.. for some while it had none.. now its got a very inadequate two..

trog

Trog, I don't know if this was directed toward me and e-pipeman or not so I'm not going to automatically assume it was and get defensive about it.

But I am going to start a new thread here on my thoughts of being a moderator here for 2 days. If you have something to say about it, you are more than welcome to post there.

At midnight on March 14 there were exactly 5000 members on this forum. Now under two weeks later there are an addition 875 member. By tomorrow night it will probably be at 6000. One thousand new members in 2 weeks and two weeks from now there will probably be a thousand more. That's a lot of traffic. Ecigs are getting more popular every day especially since they are in the news more. That's why this place is getting so crowded.

I don't know how this place used to be, being a new member, but hey, everyone is entitled to a little nostalgia every once in a while :)

As a newer member, I can opine that this forum is a fairly well-behaved and overall friendly place. I have gotten some impressions of what you are talking about, though, Lu.

I don't think that you are the only senior member that longs for the days of old. Some posters seem to be quite selective of who they will respond to, whether it be good or bad. Almost as if there is a "newbie filter". And, this may not be the case at all. If the forum is moving this fast, maybe some people only skim the posts for names they know and respect. Whether it be good, bad, or indifferent, some people require that others earn their respect before they will be paid attention to.

Of course, there are some senior members that will go out of their way to try to make people welcome. Both Kate and Terraphon come to mind immediately. I'm sure their are others, these two are just the most memorable for helping me feel welcomed.

Personally, I am glad that this is a large, active forum. There will be some bad with the good, but more people means more potential for brainstorming, discussions, and ideas, among many other things.

Some of the things I've noticed about forums is that the larger a community gets, the more effort it takes, by all members, not to get that "cold" feeling. And, on the flip-side, people have to learn that they can't take things too personally.

Anyway, as usual, I've rambled...sorry about that. I would just hate to see this community become divided. So far there seems to be a pretty strong, underlying tone of people wanting to be genuinely helpful and constructive here, and I hope that is what prevails.

BTW, a good one liner is good every once in a while. Especially after a schmaltzy "can't we all just get along" post like this :p

BTW, Phalse....paranoid, much?

This thread is a tad elitist in my view. All these tiresome newbies asking the same played out questions and I just can't be bothered...

Still, I see your point. Personally I read this forum voraciously for over a week, weeks?... I don't even remember now- before posting anything.

Has it occurred to you guys, if you can remember back to when you were new, that people just starting out, well, most of them are aware that they can do searches for the info we seek, but that's not really why they post.

They're contemplating leaving analogs behind, and they want (need) support and reassurance that it can and has been done.

They're excited. People want to share their excitement and AGAIN be reassured that it's warranted.

They want comfort. And yes, caring. A perfect stranger who's many steps ahead of me in this will share his/her experience directly. Warm and fuzzy humanity.

And instant gratification. Everybody wants instant gratification. A post goes up, you have your answer in minutes.

Now for moderator suggestions. Every new person registering should be directed to a sticky outlining how to do a search, a strong recommendation to watch all available how-to videos with links to the most relevant, and be advised that in view of advoiding redundant posts they should do a search before posting questions to the forum.

AND, all new users should be subjected to a 3 day waiting period before being allowed to post anything. I know... it sounds like tough love, but for those that don't care to "research" the site, they may decide that it's a great way to fill the time while waiting...

To those of the old folks who could be bothered, and the exuberant newer members, thanks for sharing the wealth, all comments and suggestions were greatly appreciated.

When I first joined here, it obviously was much quieter. It seems like a handful of newbs joined a day which at that time, was rather manageable. Therefore newbs then (myself included), could actually be afforded a lot more attention.

But it's just not like that now. It really isn't easily managed. I get home from work and look at 12 pages of threads. I start reading a few, and more pop up. It really never ends. So I have found that I've had to limit my readings to only those of utmost interest to me because otherwise, I'd never get to read them. I'm not really happy about that but it is what it is.

Regardless, I do enjoy the forum so here I am! It would be nice to find ways to make it more manageable but with its size now...and anticipated growth, that's going to take some doing. And nothing is going to change overnight.

I just hope all current members step in to help others as they would have liked to be helped when they first joined. It would be nice to work together to keep things going.

Well, I know how words can be misconstrued here Trog....that's why I didn't want to jump to any immediate conclusions. But actually, there are 3 other mods who have been here since I've been here: Cash, Rat and dnakr.

I agree that at some point, SJ will need to consider more and maybe even have assigned areas so we can keep up with things better.

Right now, in essence, I see we have to rely on members' direct complaints (via the complaint reporting button there) just to become aware of problems (or potential problems) because keeping up with every single thread to spot this ourselves is pretty much impossible.

I really do want to start a thread about this but I just haven't had a chance to yet. I don't even have time to spell check anymore! :D

hey Phalse... what kinda dope you on?? Trog needs some.. JK

i know i'm technically one of the nubs.. but yeah.. it was still MUCH quieter here when i first joined.. and scarily that wasn't long ago..

i don't think tis forum as elitist as some might think... i chalk it more to the "in the know" and the "not in the know".. when a new person asks the same question every day a couple times a day.. it CAN be beyond bothersome.. and i'm quite sure the "longtimers" are quite sick of answering.. the not quite so longtimers really should pick up the slack and answer instead of waiting for say TropicalBob to answer.. and the nubs.. instead of getting snotty when they say "learn to use the search".. how about heading the advice you just asked for..

before i finish.. i want to thank all the "longtimers" for the invaluable information i've recieved simply browsing this forum

Well, actually your correct taku, nice post.

Sorry, I didnt mean to call out people who say "use search" because as you stated they do have a right to state this. I really only mentioned them as a retort and I don't really mean all I said.
I was more trying to prove a point that its pointless to argue about people, because it just gets out of hand fast.

Lol I know what you mean about the "what drugs you on" haha comment, but no I'm serious people got upset, directly at me, when I signed up and posted a lot. About 3 different people total, i think they were all friends in a click.

that's always possible.. but trust me.. you are not the worst offender...

i know a user that has more posts than i do and has been here for around a month... Trog knows him well.. you're far from the most prolific of nub posters.. so don't take things out of context and make assumptions.. they lead to the arguments

np I see what you mean and you do make sense.

Also good to know you are talking about some other nubbers! and not this one, hahahah this makes me feel much better :)

It's crazy their post count didnt slow after the first 2 weeks, I mean the first week of this forums is quite fun and then you pretty much get the hang of all your questions and stop posting as much.

Good to see you back, Rusty. I hope your business is still intact, given all that's happened lately. You and Pillbox got the spotlight shined on you for awhile, and I'm sure it was damned uncomfortable.

I want a sequel to the E-Ness Monster search!

I won't dwell on "the old days". They were better. At present, we have a mob, not a community. But there are still a few wise veterans around -- Leaford, Emp, Trog, Jamie. Still, many whose names you would recognize have fled the daily mayhem here.

I guess you know Kate got banned the other day. Sad day. She was a friend of newbies and no one can take over that "welcome wagon" role. None of us older and experienced posters have the patience for one more "what's the best e-cig" question.

I come back daily to get the latest bulletins on the Death Watch. That, and the hope that we'll get a Loch Ness update. Hope all is well with you, my friend.

Hi T/Bob.
We still have trading standards looking at the e-cig, but the picture is on everyone now not just me and pillbox but he still hogs the lime light when ever he can lol.

This is the latest video for him to star in lol lol ....Ps .... I dont like his tie hahahaha
