Well this is some of the nicest annealed stuff I have used by far. Just wrapped a 26awg 3mm 6 wrap coil and it was so easy to do and to place on the STM. This is some fantastic wire. Super soft and easy to wrap and place. I think I have found a new favorite. Should've known though these guys have the best Kanthal and Nickel too. Definately a 5 out of 5.

IDK if it is acid washed Steve. It's not rough like Unk its smooth just dull color. Absolutely nothing when wiped with IPA.
Interesting. To be honest as long as it vapes well and is basically clean, the right guage/resistivity and the correct TCR, doesnt really matter!! Enjoy!

Well I can see why you guys like the 24awg better. It is a little warmer but it seems a lot smoother then the 26. It is a little more difficult to place on the STM but not bad. This new Ti is so soft it makes it easy when I trim the tails I bend it over the screw so as not to touch the chimney and this stuff bends right over, It's perfect.

to be honest i've noticed no difference in the vape between the 24 and 26 ga wire. i like to keep the resistance up, so 26 works best for me in that respect. the 9 wrap i did @ 2.5 mm comes in at .37 ohm. easy to bend the dog legs needed for the stm with this nice soft wire. it "vapes a treat".

Yeah I kind of agree with you. The 24 has such a low resistance it seems to take a ton of power to get it heated up good. I'm only using 6 wraps and the 24 is coming in around .185 the 26 about.29. Have to use about 25J with the 24 but only 18 with the 26. The vape is smoother with the 24 but I don't think I'm getting real good battery life. Thats why I only got 25' of each to try it. This wire is so soft it is amazing. I think when it comes to getting more will get the 26. I'm sure I could get more wraps on the STM the way this wire is. Only thing I'm hoping like someone say YiHi hits it out of the park with their new atty.

When deciding on gauges, look at your build numbers on SteamEngine site, but in particular, the "HEAT FLUX" numbers. (There are also a couple of good iPhone apps that give you the same info and allow you to save build records). You can then more easily make a decision which gauge will give you the better Vape. With that in mind, my go to build on my STM's is:
24g Titanium, 6 wraps on 3mm rod. Approx .18 ohm.

i've been looking at the wire wizard tab. wrong tab, i'd guess, as i see no input for watts. thanks for the info. i don't like a hot vape. my 9 wrap build mentioned earlier with 26 ga. does work well for me tho. i have my evic mini set to a 25 watt max in tc. if i multiply 25 x 7.73 i get just under 200. i know i'm not figuring it right at this point. i'll go play with steam some more. anyway, i like the vape i get and that's what counts. i just like the math involved also.

If you put your favourite build into steam engine and add wattage your see your preferred heat flux

Then you can use that as a baseline to aim for with all future builds mate

You guys mind posting some pictures of your builds? Are you just using single strand spaced coils?

My local B&M had some Grade 1 titanium in stock so I picked some up 26g up - 50 foot for $17. He also had 24g, 28g 34g and 36g. We tried making some fused claptons with dual core 26g wrapped with 34g. We made a 14 wrap on a 3mm bit dual coil. It was damn beefy and barely fit in the 30mm Temple. I think the size of the coil was just to much because we were not able to get the hot spots out and ended up oxidizing it. So we scrapped it and started over with out success. Everything we tried seemed to oxidize at 7 watts while lightly pulsing. The best we came up with was 26g 8 wrap spaced dual coils around .12 ohms at 500F and 80 watts.

So the question is, are you guys just using single strand spaced coils or are there any other builds that are working? Is it possible to pinch titanium with out oxidizing? Is it possible to Clapton or fused Clapton?

Thank you in advance!

The best way (for me) to make a contact coil without heavy oxidation is to torch it with a butane torch till blue.

Empirical experience has shown me that gr1 Ti oxidizes much faster when you use the mod to make it glow than using a torch. Why? I have my theory but it's subjective at best:

Ti oxidizes with O2 right? Gr1 has almost no oxygen inside so it can only react with surrounding ambient oxygen. When you dry burn a coil on the mod, oxygen is available all around so it will react fast.

When you, however, torch the wire, the flame of the butane torch isolates the piece of wire that is being heated from the surrounding oxygen taking more time to reach the point of no return.

I might be saying something completely wrong but I always had much more success using the torch with finesse.

That being said, in the end, a simple spaced coil is all I need for great flavour.

Tony

PS: do not torch or dry burn the 36awg. It's too thin. It might ignite and you're screwed because it burns white like magnesium and can't be put out with water. Same goes for steel btw so no news there.
