Found something interesting... It's an article about nano granularity in Ti for medical application. Basically the article describes the problem of grade 2 and grade 4 (commercially pure) being coarse grained and thus too ductile for many medical applications. To avoid dangerous components of the traditional Ti–6Al–4V (AI and V are toxic), Ti grade 2 and 4 could be extruded to reduce grain size and double their yield strength so UGF (ultra fine grained) grade 4 could be as strong as Ti–6Al–4V and improve biocompatibility

Seems that there are indeed diferences for surgical applications although I seriously doubt we will notice it in our coils [emoji14]

So, what I've gleaned so far: 30ga should suit; I've looked online and found a place called unkamen on Etsy, who will sell 50' of 30ga for 9.95; when I get it, before using in a coil, I should wash it in soapy water, then wipe with alcohol... yes?

Another question occurs to me. How does it last, compared to kanthal? I can get months out of a kanthal coil, but then I dry-burn it about every 2-4 days -- my juice is a heavy gunker. How would the titanium hold up to that sort of use, since dry-burning it is a bad idea?

Thx y'all!

I got my 28 ga titanium from there good wire easy to work with!

Man, you guys were active while I was gone!

Anyway, since I finally have some titanium on the way, I have a question that I'm not sure has been answered. I normally roll with a genesis tank. Now, that means I need to pulse the wire to make sure I don't have hotspots or shorts. Since heating up Ti is not a good idea, what should I consider doing here?

You can heat it up, you just need to be careful about it. Once it starts going blue, you should probably call it quits. It's fine until it goes grey. I've been building dual coil, so I also want to heat it up beforehand so I can make sure they're at least somewhat close to even. I'll pulse at about 10w until I start seeing some color and make sure they're both coloring similarly.

The grain size of our cold drawn Ti wire is going to be really small in the un-annealed condition. There could be considerable grain growth after annealing depending on what annealing temperature is selected.
Bottom line is gonna be...
Vapers don't give a damn. It's all gonna be good for us.

I ordered four spools of different sizes and I'm probably gonna stop experimenting with Ni builds once it gets here. Or at least once my YiHi chip supports Ti settings. At least I've got plenty of wire to keep trying. So far it's been easy peasy with nickel, but that is mostly due to its super low resistance not shorting out on mesh. Titanium could be a different story; I perhaps may even keep the TC turned on when I'm pulsing it.

I'd say (and I think many would agree) that you don't need to worry about waiting for the Ti support, as long as you can run ni200. Just start around 80-100F lower than where you would with nickel, and work from there until it's right.

The only downside with keeping TC on is that it's going to heat up to temp real quick, and then drop the power to 1 watt or less.

Oh I definitely know that. I just don't want to learn one way and then stop doing it a week later haha. I already had a bit of trouble switching from a SX chip to a DNA chip today. Completely forgot how much simpler the DNA menu is lol.

And yeah, I'm just hoping that it will get hot enough for a second just to see if there is a hotspot. If not, back to the drawing board.

You got the cleaning right and unkamen should be decent wire.

As far as gunking, YMMV, LOL. I use a liquid with caramel, cappuccino, chocolate and EM in it, among other things. Since I switched to rayon wick the gunking has dropped dramatically. Now, with TC, it's dropped even further. I have about 60-80ml through my current setup and the last time I checked the coils they were pretty clean, just starting to get dark. Every liquid and vaping situation is different though.

On another note, as far as medical grade 1 titanium or medical grade in general, from our perspective as vapers I think the real difference would be the "cleanliness" of the wire. Medical grade, assuming the finished product, would be sterile and very, very, clean.

Soap & water and then alcohol is plenty clean enough for me -- I've been "torching" my kanthal with a bic lighter and then rinsing.

It's good to note that maybe the TC could help with the gunking. I'm working on my strawberry & cream recipe, trying to substitute different strawberry flavors for the inawera shisha strawberry, because I know the organic nature of that is responsible for probably 50% of the gunking problem. But till I get the new recipe right, I'll be sticking with the shisha for my ADV.

I tried rayon some months ago, and at first really liked it -- I was still struggling to learn that "right amount" for cotton, but since you use so much more with rayon, it worked better for me -- at first. But unfortunately, I got a couple of seriously dry hits from rayon at one point, and the taste was so JUST PLAIN HORRIBLE, I went back to cotton. Now, everytime I try to use a rayon wick, I get a *hint* of that nasty rayon-dry-hit taste, and it's just nasty. So now I stick with organic cotton. I love how the japanese cotton wicks, and how fast/easy it is both to make the wick and get past the break-in phase, but sometimes I still use organic cotton from cotton balls; same taste, just not as good wicking, and not nearly as easy; the break-in takes MUCH longer, but it does seem to last longer before you start tasting "hot metal".
