Those colors are just interference colors that result from development of oxides formed during heating. As the oxides become a little thicker the colors change. It's all a matter of the wavelength of light and the oxide thickness. You are talking about Angstrom thicknesses. As long as you are seeing colors like that the oxides are totally adherent and you don't need to worry about even the slightest possibility that they will get into the vapor stream. Lots of times interference colors are developed either by heating or by anodizing to create jewelry.
Very interesting info :) Thx.

I was researching why my titanium wouldn't form immediately that thick titanium dioxide like I've seen in other pictures and I came across a board on the dark side of the net where people use titanium nails for some recreational uses and they actually were commenting that grade 2 nails would quickly become dull and coated while grade 1 wouldn't so easily because of the oxygen content being much higher in grade 2.

I wonder how many people have actually grade 2 instead of grade 1. Most of this wire comes from jewelry businesses and I doubt there is as tight control as we might wish?

Did you start experimenting already with titanium? :)

Cheers

I've been working with the 24 gauge titanium wire I have on hand in drippers and every coil has been A+. I'm still waiting for some 28 gauge I have on order so I can trap it under those impossibly small round bottom screws that the tank manufacturers seem to love. :)

In grade 1 from ring Lord, my options are 30g and 32g. Then the jump is to 24g but doesn't come in grade 1 or at least doesn't say grade 1, also comes in colors

I got 2x 25 ft spools of 30g and 32g (100ft) I emailed them but don't expect any response until Monday.

24g sounds way too big

i use the grade #1 30 ga, i just use 2 strands twisted tight in a drill, 7 wraps comes out at about .27 or .28.....my coils are not spaced far apart as a matter of fact i try to get them as close as possible without touching....have wrapped several and they all come out the same without any problems and the purity of mine is 99.7% (from Ringlord)

edit: the grade#1 30gauge Ringlord wire comes wrapped around cardboard and not a traditional spool at least mine did, have 6 rolls all-together.

hahaha, man i know what you mean, yet i'm finally at the point where i only want one more device and that would either be a LP Reo or a Sun-Box and that would be it......at least for awhile :D

did an edit on post [HASHTAG]#324[/HASHTAG]
Man I'm there too...I want to try a bottom feeder! I'm tempted to buy that cheap clone one (greyscano or something) just to try and see if it's my speed.

yep i like it very much so far but as said it's just an entry level of so-so quality, yet mine has held up perfect so far.
like i said above it would be a great box to mod into a DNA40.

what plans on Ti builds are you considering?....what device the V3 Flask or do you have others.

What's up in titanium world? :)

You know what we really need?

A chart with both ni 200 and titanium temperature / resistance mapping.

I mean a real one, not something based solely on the temperature coefficient (which btw doesn't work properly)

Any idea where to get some data to plot something accurate?

I know that after a few days it doesn't really matter once we get used to the transition between ni 200 and titanium but as a reference for newbies and old hats...

:)

I'm still with the same mods, one new atty (mutation x) but same coil on my erlp since I got my titanium wire. I need to check how many days /weeks this coil has on it... Ahhhh it feels so good not having to rebuild :D

I took my ERLk apart last night to see if the coil and wick was doing OK considering I have no idea what temperature it is really running at. It looked slightly gunked but not much.

I wanted to do some trimming on the wick so I ran some tap water on it (no pre-heat or any fancy stuff) the wick and coil came out looking like when I built it and even the wick between the coil wraps was snow white. - Go figure.

After trimming the wicks I positioned them in the channels as I wanted them to be and let it dry over night. Rayon when it dries tends to act like cloth that has been starched and hold the shape you gave it when wet. It is kind of cool because when you re-assemble the Atty you don't have to worry about fuzzy loose ends getting caught in the threads.
