Well, I dont know if you are nuts Cyrus, but I believe you are completely correct.

A bit of DW can increase performance of "100% VG" and minimizes/eliminates the Acrolein issue. I am not a chemist, but I tried to do some research on this, Kurt correct me if I am wrong.

Reference on VG:

http://www.aciscience.org/docs/Physical_properties_of_glycerine_and_its_solutions.pdf

Here are points in the document for @100%VG to consider on adding a bit of water to his 100% VG. All positives from an ecig perspective.

Lowers Boiling Point: Pg 6 - Table 9 (fifth column)
Lowers Viscosity: Pg. 10 - Table 17
Increases Surface Tension: Pg. 32 - Table 35

Hi gdeal,

Nope, Cyrus isn't nuts and he wouldn't steer you wrong. And thanks for posting a to link that PDF. If it was linked earlier in the post, I missed it. I'm printing it now. Dang, had I realized how many pages it is, I would have just saved the link.

I Love ECF!!!

And I really hope you are enjoying your PTE liquids (if that's why you're here).

Yes, I gotta couple of TE brews in the ejuice cellar. I use BJ43's method, with a slight tweak.

There's Beege again (my fond nickname for BJ43). I swear, so many of these guys are Wizards. Beege and his Wick Races, testing SS Mesh types to see which is best (#500 wins), now moving on to testing other wick materials, and you say he's got a great PTE method. Nothing about these guys surprises me any more.

Wizards, I tell ya - Wizards.

Thank you for the explanation Kurt, very much appreciated.

I'm just wondering why most e-liquid producers - here in Europe at least - sell VG bases diluted with water at 18-20%, then... sure it becomes more fluid, yet it brings the boiling temp down to a point that's easily reacheable by normal atomizer coils.

Luckily for me, I make my VG bases at 5% of water, and that should put the VG boiling out ot the equation as I understand it.

There are some vendors here that thin their VG-nic as well. Vermont Vapor and Ecigexpress come to mind. Their idea is to have a ready-to-vape liquid, although the nic levels can be too high for direct vaping. I use the recipe %flavor + %water = 22%, and this works well for wicking in cartos and carto-tanks, as well as most attys. Not Ego-T attys however. I have yet to find a VG juice recipe that does well with those. Also less good for CE-type cartos. Not sure why. Could be PG just wicks better due to chemical reasons, not just viscosity reasons.

Yes, tobaccos are really tough to get, mainly because they are a mix of many many compounds. I have tried a number of tobacco-flavors, but have found few that work well for me. Might be I am making them too strong. TFA tobaccos seem to do better as a secondary flavor or 1% or less on their own. I like the tobacco absolute blend, but not at more than 0.6%. Above that it gets too cloying for me. Matter of taste, though. Just my opinion.

I am actually thinking that some of what makes tobacco taste good is nicotine-oxides in the leaf, which would of course be present in significant quantities. a strongly yellowed unflavored nic liquid can take on a distinct tobacco taste, which can be quite good! So tobacco flavor is a rather complex thing that we do not fully understand yet...or at least I don't.

Someone in this thread said they had ordered Stanwell Malange to make a PTE out of. I wonder how it turned out, and if they like it.

It just dawned on me that water is dirty cheap, compared to glycerol... So may be the vendors aren't that much interested in the physical properties of their e-liquids, but definitely in their components' cost :D

don't know about PG, can't vape it at all, not even at 10%...

Does anyone have experience with Latakia-rich pipe tobacco blends?

I've read somewhere that latakia should be one of the best pipe tobaccos to (try and) make flavors, so I'm wondering if someone here already used it for making TE.

Well I've smoked it, and damn its so good :) Just saying "latakia" is one of the few things that sets off a craving for lighting up !

I think this will cook the tobacco too much, rather than flash extract the flavors. But no, I have not tried it. The fast method in the pan makes more than enough for my needs. Unless you are planning to sell juices, even 30 mL of a flavor is a lot for a while, and I have found with VG the TE is very stable for months...in fact, it actually gets better. Mine has been sitting at room temp for about a year, and it has deepened into a very delightful flavor. Very stable. Not sure if longer cooking is going to make something this stable. You don't want to break down the plant material much.

Hey Kurt..You answered one concern I had was using a preservative...like you I can't tolerate PG nor alcohol..even some sweetners make me wheeze. I'm looking for a suggestion on tobacco. The problem I kept running into with tobacco juice is it all tasted like cigar or pipe which I don't like. Could you suggest a tobacco I might try...what about using up my winstons?

It's funny you said that..thats what I've resorted to vaping. I had some unflavored that had a nice amber color to it so I just started vaping it. I have some vanilla and coffee flavors from Prosmoke that I add to my cartridge for more sweetness. Thats what I'm looking for is a tobacco-coffee and vanilla flavorings I can create and mix myself right in my cartridge. I have vanilla beans, would they work with your pan method?

I am currently extracting 10 different tobacco blends at different temperatures and lengths of time. I will let everyone know what seems to work best for me when finished. I notice alot of people asking about smoke flavor. I saw a comment on TFA about people using Black sesame seed extract to add a smoke taste to their blends so if you have an interest in that might give it a shot.

If you do use black sesame, use it at well under 1% to start. It is craaazy-strong stuff and will VERY easily overpower a mix.

I recommend cutting it to at least 1/10th strength before using, then try a drop at a time per 10ml - possibly even less. I don't have an exact % that works every time for me yet - I only "got it right" in one mix months ago and of course I can't find notes.

It's not a flavor I'd ever use alone, but it does add something interesting/somewhat smoky provided you go light with it.

Well, I am in direct contact with several vendors, and I've never heard of a vendor thinning with water for purposes of more profit from a cheap additive. The ones that I know that thin their VG-nic do it to make the mixing from free-base and VG more homogenous. It takes a lot of mixing to make an unthinned VG-nic homogenous. Some just don't want to chance hot spots. And after the QC debacle a couple Novembers ago, no vendor wants to risk their nic-levels being inaccurate. I might have had something to do with that.

Vendors know that if the customer is not happy with their nic, they will go elsewhere.

Can't help you there, MsMacgyver. I've only made one essence, and that is from Stanwell Malange. I would not recommend Winston tobacco, although that was my brand too. Very very processed, and probably bristling with TSNAs. Of course the pipe tobacco might be too, which is a bit of concern, but I think the risk is similar to US smokeless tobacco...not zero, but not nearly that of smoking. No data, however, just conjecture.

In terms of tobacco flavoring that you can buy, my absolute favorite is Caramel Tobacco from Blue Mist Vaping. I buy the flavor itself, make it at about 12%. It is light, but adds a nice TH. In fact, it has been pretty much my favorite vape for months now. Very unlike any other tobacco flavors I have tried. Plays well with other flavors too, like vanilla.

Making vanilla flavor from beans, AFAIK, is a long process of soaking the bean in ethanol, although some have used PG. I was wondering recently if one could do this hot flash-cook with VG and vanilla bean. Someone else might have done this. You might post in the regular DIY. Vanilla is definitely an enigmatic and difficult to get right flavor.

Frontier sells (through Whole Foods) a natural vanilla extract in VG, no ethanol or PG. I have used it as the VG diluting component of a juice, with pretty good results.

Got one promising tobacco bag today... just need some coffee filters (or big syringe with cotton) and I'm good to go ;)

wife isn't that happy with my planned use of the smallest no-stick pan in our inventory, though... perhaps I'd better buy one extra of those, together with the coffee filters... :D

Thanks Kurt...I saw that vanilla while searching Amazon...I did try vanilla and coffee..they turned out surprisingly well...I did your pan method and the microwave both...put 3 drops in my cartridge..tasted really good but the flavor seems to grow as you vape, got pretty strong so I had to change cartridges...LOL

Do you have any thoughts of using powdered sugar dissolved in VG for a sweetner...

I have been wanting to order some tobacco leaves so maybe I'll put leafonly on my list for next month and try some tobacco extraction

I'm not sure - I think that would gunk up your coils very quickly. I would suggest trying sucralose, which is a very effective (read strong) sweetener. Never hurts to have some EM [ethyl maltol] on hand too (a flavor enhancer with some sweetening effect).

I forgot to ask...is there anyway to speed up the process of turning VG with nic in it to an amber color quicker? The stuff I am using has been in my cupboard for quite awhile. Would it turn faster if I let it sit out or will that destroy the nic...Thanks

Certainly - leave it on a window sill :p The color changing is primarily oxidation in action, and most people try to reduce it or the speed at which it occurs. It seems the most desirable to use a gentle process of steeping juice in a cool dark place. Slowly aging it like a fine wine, but you can definitely speed it up. Heat and light are the primary accelerants of this. A lot of people do a "quick steep" by placing their juice in a hot (not boiling) water for some duration after mixing. Whether this does more to oxidize or otherwise anneal the components, I don't know, but I like to use very hot (around 140F) water in a thermos for a few hours.

As for the nic concentration, I defer to MadVapes' experiment (which I could not find a working link to their site for unfortunately). This is their latest results I have:
