No Snow here, but we did just have a bad thunderstorm, got over 2 inches of rain in an hour, and lightning was really bad, didn't loose power, but had quite a few blinks. Not normal for this time of year, like what we get in the summer all the time. We have had some strange weather this winter.

I have a wood 16' garage door. I had the bottom panel replaced about 6-7 years ago when my wife backed out before the door was all the way up and broke it. It has a soft spot on the bottom panel that's getting worse. I was planning on having it replaced this summer with a metal door but I don't know if it's going to last that long. I've got a lot of other financial responsibilities right now but I may have to have it done anyway. I could have the bottom panel replaced but it would be about half the price of getting a new door. The door and the opener are both about 19 years old so I'm planning on replacing the opener also.

I surrendered. I battled for 4 hours trying to keep ahead of the snow but it got me. The thrower was fine the first 2-4 as it zipped down the drive. I got down to the plow crud and left it for the blower. Went in and dried my stuff and went out and there was another three or so and it was a lot wetter. I tried to make it work but went back in and pulled out the blower. Took a pass and it wasn't blowing. I got a string, tied the handle and lifted it up to take a look. Darn impeller spring pins broke.

I had to replace them once before and they're a bear. It's cold and snowing hard. No cleaning the swamp while you're fighting the alligators. I battled with the thrower and got the upper parking area cleared and about 50 yards down the drive.

Went back in and by the time I went back out there was 8 inches where I had cleared and the end of the drive is whatever. I have a mess. Went to plan B.Got the thrower to cut a path for the dog and almost to the wood shed and figure I'll fight the impeller today. Disgusted, I let it snow. Last I checked, there was a bit over 14 inches total and I haven't even opened the door to see what came down late but it shouldn't be too much.

I got into a convo on FB with a fellow I argue with a lot about things like arming teachers. He saw my snow pix and blower woes and he posted about 2 stage an 3 stage blowers. I had checked them out last year and wasn't willing to spend over a thousand on one. However, his post got me thinking about that being less than one of my mortgage payments that I no longer make. I think I took less than 15 minutes to find a Cub Cadet (was considering Toro also but not as good a deal) and reviewed three youtubes. It then took about a minute to order it. Tired of battling an old blower on this darn drive.

Roth, some of the guys that used to run the one at work had problems with the shear pins breaking quite frequently. I would think that there has to be a better design than those pins but I'm not sure what it is. Now you know that since you bought a new one that you're not going to get enough snow to run it for at least a few years. That's what happened to me. I had an old piece of junk one that worked when it wanted to and got all kinds of snow. As soon as I bought the new one, I used it a few times the first year and haven't used it the last two years.

Hitt, I'm counting on a few years before I ever need it, one of the reasons I bought it. LOL

The snow came in just under 15". I waited until the sun was up and just over 32 degrees to tackle the sheer pins (actually spring pins) and they were a challenge. The one I thought would be the hardest went in fairly easily with a ball peen hammer but I didn't see a piece from the old pin fall out. The one in the front however tested my resolve. I banged it and banged it and it barely was started, not much room to hit it.

I finally looked around and found something that looked like a railroad spike but only about 4 or 5 inches long. If it had been a little heavier, it would have worked great. eventually I got it in far enough that I could get a bit more power into the ball peen and done.

The blowing went so good after the fix, I hate to sell it. I doubt that I can get more than a couple hundred bucks for it and the mod I made to the impeller really moved that heavy wet snow. The big problem here is sticks. With trees everywhere a snowstorm drops a bunch of branches that the blower finds before you do.

After posting my last, I took the dog out and checked the mail. My drive is completely clear, the cars are clear and the gravel road is clear. If I hadn't taken a nap this afternoon, I could have taken a motorcycle out for a spin today. Weird Spring snowstorms. I might even see grass by Sunday but I'm sure there will be snow piles for awhile longer.

I also got curious about my old snowblower. In June, it will be 7 years ago and it was at least 10 years old when I bought it off Craigslist.

My last snowblower was a small lawn boy with a plastic deck. It was made in the 70’s. My brother in law bought it at a yard sale and gave it to me. I had a small engine mechanic I knew rebuild the carburetor and go through it. It was ok at first but the last couple years I had it, it was a PIA.

Boy did I just get some good news. I sent my 2017 info to my accountant a week or so ago and she sent back this afternoon and said I sent her my 1099R from 2015. I went and checked my on line account and 2015 was the only form there. I called customer service and they told me that if it's not there then there was no taxable income. I told him I know I had a 1099R last year and asked him to check.

While I waited I checked my info from last year and I had sent the 2015 1099R last year also! He got back on and, yes, it was correct, there was nothing to report last year. That meant my accountant didn't notice the error on last year's filing. Now the good news.

I called her back because she missed the fact that it was the previous year form and I had declared $35k more income than I actually had. Translated, the Treasury owes me about $10K back and I already was carrying a sizable refund left in last year. This is going to be a very good April 15th since I already pulled out half of what I have to this year and had taxes withheld. I'm not going to have to have anything taken out on the second half and will have enough to cover next year's taxes plus get a refund.

Without a mortgage payment and with the requirement now to withdraw a minimum each year from my IRAs, finances are going to be very liquid for awhile.

That's Great, you get a Lot of your money back. I had to pay a little more this year, but only $351, but I was expecting 10x as much, so I was happy to pay it.

It always amazed me that the tax credit got cut off at 16. Now I was born in November so I graduated at 17 but most of my classmates were 18 which means the tax cred disappeared for most after their sophomore year. That eliminates the cred at a time that kids become the most expensive.

17 to 18 kids become the most expensive.
You sure about that, I think it is when they are in there 20's, when they want mom and dad to help them because they spend too much and have to come home to live.

Edit: Trust me here, I know from experience, kids get more expensive as they get older, and it is Not deductible.

LOL Burnie, I was referring to the age of legal responsibility. Are arguments are identical, you just pushed it past that magical year of 18 when kids are no longer your responsibility. Heck, I just laid out $30k to kids that aren't even mine in their mid 30s (live in's son and wife). I fully expect that to come back with interest but you never know.
