My poker buddy passed away this week. He was 92, one of the nicest guys I ever met. Just a little guy, maybe 5'6" is he stood on his toes. He played baseball as part of his job in the Army, a pitcher. I'm glad he got to see the Phillies win a few games before he left us.

Died of lung cancer after some 50 years of smoking, just another smoking caused death although he had quit 32 years ago. Yeah, he started at around 9 or 10.

Sorry to hear that. I’ll be luck to live that long. Both parents passed before 90. My mom was in her 70’s. I did have an uncle that came to my moms funeral that was 94 but that was eight years ago.

Well, it's official, I'm a senior today, my first senior moment.

Yesterday, the temperature was climbing into the high 80s. I closed the house up and turned on the air. I was up late into the early morning Monday and I started watching a movie and fell asleep. Woke up at 4:30 and it felt warm, it was, 85.

I looked at the thermostat and it looked fine, went out and nothing happening with the unit. Went into the basement no breaker flipped so I called the HVAC guys since it was another hot one today. They left at 4:30.

I called first thing in the morning and they said they'd fit me in. He came out just in time as it was just hitting 80. Checked outside fine, checked inside, fine. He had me check the thermostat to insure it was on, I did. He had me take the fan off auto and just turn it on and that was fine.

He said he'd have to check the thermostat. He did, it was set on heat. The thermostat is in a dark hallway and I never rechecked to insure it was switched right and never grabbed a flashlight to recheck.

That's the kind of thing old people do. LOL

    Hey, everybody makes mistakes.
Never make that one again. I got some small red and blue dots and put them on the thermostat. I thought about it a bit though. I've seen a number of thermostats that display heat or cool in the window when you're setting the temp.

I also got the bill for $95 for my stupidity but I called it in and after I explained to Nancy, the gal that handles the billing and relayed my stupidity, she knocked it down to $60 so the pain wasn't quite as bad.

LOL, no, I actually wasn't trying to get a discount. I was just laughing at my stupidity as I relayed what I did.

Well I got my first taste of plant based be'f yesterday. I was picking up a couple frozen meals in an attempt to lower my calorie intake as my gut is bothering me. I saw these Healthy Choice meals, one beef andd one chicken substitute and decided to give them a try.

The beef wasn't bad although it certainly lacked texture. I'll have the chicken later this week.

Hitt, I just noticed your post about the move. It flashed me back several decades. My parents took me my first year. After we got my stuff in the room, I walked them back to their car and we said our goodbyes. Then I cried like a baby until I realized I needed to walk past a bunch of guys playing basketball and sucked it up. Went in my room, pulled on some sneakers and went out and got in the game.

I had my car the second year in the dorm and then got in an apartment with 4 other guys. We were going to room together my senior year until one quit school with two weeks to go to head for SF and the summer of love. Another decided to go back to the dorms, one decided to take a year off and I can't remember what the last was doing but the landlord hit me up for the entire summer cost.

I got out of it by going in and talking to the landlord but had no place to live when I got back to campus in August and they had closed a few hundred apartments. No cell phones made search a case of just knocking on doors from bulletin board posts looking for roommates. It took me until night and a huge headache to find one.

People were sleeping in tents in front of the main administration building all year long. I felt lucky,

Darn Hitt, you're always winning something.

To celebrate the new normal today, I chose to try the fake hamburgers for Labor Day. They really weren't bad. A bit of a funny taste but had I not known they weren't beef, I probably wouldn't have known. I used the Beyond burgers as I couldn't find the Impossible burger that I wanted to try. You never know, Biden could win and they could ban meat like his running mate wants.

I haven’t tried any of those yet. My wife got me an air fryer for my bday. I had been wanting one but never bought it. It’s only two quart but that’s fine for the two of us. I tried it out with some crinkle cut fries yesterday. They were really good.

Whew, been a while since I commented. But I've been keeping up with you guys and I'm glad to see everyone is doing okay with all the crap going on. It's been a busy summer for me, but at least productive. Kind of nice being unemployed, gave me time to get some projects done. I'll update later when I can on current projects and such. Just wanted to check in and say "Hi!" Be safe!

It's nice hearing from you. I mowed and trimmed a crabapple tree Saturday and ran some errands. Then yesterday I rented a verticutter and did the lawn. Holy cow those things will work you to death. My shoulder was sore yesterday and my back is pretty sore today.

Something really nice happened today when I went to the Post Office to drop off some packages. I was in line waiting, and there was a black young man getting some paperwork and a passport done to join the service. After a little while the guy in front of me asked him if he was joining the army, he said no, he was joining the air force. Then the man told the postal worker he would pay his $35 for him, this was a white man paying the tab for a black young man to get a passport to join the service. I thought that was really nice. All whites are not against all blacks, we are all people, and that white man showed it today. Just wanted to share...

Three posts bring three different thoughts. First Rebel, it's good to see a post from you. I thought we might have lost you forever. When you mention your projects, hopefully one wasn't replacing the decking on a deck. I planned to do that on my oldest deck while my gf was out in Washington State for over a month. That's when I found out that pressure treated was unavailable due to covid.

Hitt, I didn't know what you meant by verticutter but, when you said your shoulders hurt, I figured out what it might be. I've never done it myself but having seen the results, I could imagine doing it with a hand held machine could be painful. I think of it as a dethatcher or aerator.

Finally Burnie, first, it was cool that the fellow paid the kid's cost for getting a passport but it was only $35? Is there a cheaper rate for people going into the military. Last time I got one, which was well over 20 years ago now, it cost over $90 plus the cost of the picture. I might want to get one just in case I want to fly again unless I get a real id license.

No decking replacement here Roth. We had ours done a couple of years ago and although it looks nice with the treated wood I would never do it again, too much upkeep. Next time we'll replace the floor boards with composite decking. More expensive for sure but I'm sick of staining wood and it would be worth the extra money.

My projects included a few outdoor projects and a few indoor. We replaced the blinds in the house with the cellular kind. We had the roman blinds before and most of the strings were broke and the fabric was starting to get dingy. I like the new ones, one touch up and down, nice fabric and they do a great job of keeping the heat and light out. Outdoors I replace the wire for our underground dog fence. The old one had some breaks in it and it was easier to replace the whole line rather than track down the breaks. With our new dog, which is a husky, having a way to contain him was a must because he is very curious of his surroundings and prone to run anytime something catches his attention. A few other projects that was more grunt work than anything else but satisfying to get completed.

Roth, a verticutter is similar to an aerator. Instead of pulling plugs up like the aerator, the verticutter has a row of circular blades underneath that you can adjust the depth on to basically cut grooves into the ground so the seed can hit the soil to germinate. I always go both directions with it to get better coverage. It also pulls a lot of thatch to the surface so I always have to mow after I verticut to pick up the thatch. I didn't get a lot this time. Only about one lawn bag but my lawn isn't very big either.
