    Somewhere between here and there
LOL, all the trees around me are over the top of my house. Neighbors trees are overtop of my house. I've got a dead one in my back yard that I will probably pay to get knocked down. I can't see a way to fell it that won't get hung up in another tree creating more of an issue. At the same time, I have limbs I want removed that I can't reach with ladder and a 10' trimmer. I also have two oak trees I'd like down but might just do the one off my drive that drops the most acorns on my drive and cars. It's bowed at the top heading toward my front deck and has dropped branches on my car causing damage. In fact, a fairly decent sized branch came down in the storm last night that would have done some major damage had anything been under it.

I called two trimmers today. One gave me a bid of 1500 to trim both. Does that seem like a lot? I just don’t know. I’m waiting to hear from the other one. He also said for an extra $100 he’d clean the gutters.

Darn that seems like a lot to me. I don't know how much trimming is necessary or how big the trees are but I don't expect I'll pay that much to have my work done. My guess is they get a lot more for work in developments than they get in the woods.

Both trees are over 30’ tall. I’m going to wait until I get the second bid to decide which way to go.

Hitt, to give you perspective, here's what I'm dealing with as far as trees.

You live in the woods. I live in a subdivision. If I knew then what I know now, I would have planted the chanticlear pear tree further from the house.

It is noisy around here with the cicadas. Even in the house with the windows closed you can hear them. I was down off the peak I live on and out of the woods you don't even hear them but here, constant white noise. The rain later today will quiet them down. Not sure if this will work.

I got a second bid on my tree trimming from a company that my neighbor across the street recommended and the bid was about half of what the first guy bid. Only problem is he said they are about 2 months backlogged but would try to work us in on a day when they finish a big job and have time left in the day. Who knows when that will be.

Hit, the trees not going to grow much between now and when they show up. Plus, I'm sure they'll get done earlier than expected on some job. The price is obviously a lot better.

A few years ago the gf's sister was making various ointments and one used jewel weed as it's a natural treatment for poisons like ivy and oak. Apparently it's very good medicinally for a variety of things.

    Jewelweed Medicinal Uses
Jewelweed boast antifungal and antimicrobial properties. It is often used as a sole or base ingredient to get rid of poison ivy, dermatitis, to treat bug bites and stings, cure athlete’s foot, minor burns, swelling around bruises, joint pain, inflammation, in the promotion of steady blood flow post childbirth, and poisoning from fish.

If you rub freshly picked and crushed jewelweed directly onto the skin after a bug bite or sting or coming into contact with poison ivy, poison oak, or poison sumac, the sense of relief comes almost instantly.

You can also make a salve or wound wash out of either fresh or dried jewelweed to treat the same conditions. Learn how to make jewelweed salve by checking out my homemade recipe.

Well, we brought a handful back from NJ to grow for her since the wooded setting is its natural environment. She stopped making the ointment but the plant never stops growing. It shoots seeds everywhere and it seems you never can pull enough of it out to stop its spread. Very shallow roots but unless you wipe it out totally, it's back the next year.

I told her she should start selling it because people are getting $5 and up for a bunch of seeds. Might have a bunch of unhappy customers after a few years though. lol

Oh I need to vent and I hate to do it on FB. My live in has been in NY for the last week staying with the love of her life. He was around when her kids were young and she broke up with him because he was cheating on her. He's got throat cancer that think from the picture I saw he's left go far too long. His long term girlfriend died suddenly Xmas eve from a heart attack. From what I'm hearing, I don't think either was in the best of shape before that with a lot of illegal script drugs being taken. In other words, she walked into a mess. The guy apparently never grew up with his mother taking care of him until he got with his gf who then took care of him. His brother told my gf to leave and never come back because he needs to learn to take care of himself but I'm betting he doesn't last another month or so. Breaking up pain killers and snorting them doesn't sound like a good medical plan. I was at their house about 20 years ago and it was a really nice place, it sounds like that is no longer the case with vines growing in one of the bedroom windows, broken appliances- washer, dryer, dishwasher, etc. Obviously, with no way to clean his clothes and not being able to get up the stairs to the bathroom, he is a mess hygienically. Sound awful enough? I just kept getting images of this that I had to get her off the phone. Oh, the kitchen cabinets are filled with mouse turds.

Anyway, she wants to bring his two dogs here, one appears to be a smallish greyhound and one lab mix think. My first reaction was an absolute no since I've already got three dogs and two cats here. However after hearing not only the above stuff but also how the dogs weren't getting fed properly, I reluctantly said, if he'll allow her to take them for a week or so, I'd let her bring them. I also stipulated that if he passed that we'd find a home for them. I'm hoping he refuses to let her take them.

Hitt, around $55 for the mailbox. I had a non-treated 4x4 that I cut to size and painted that it sits on. I went above and beyond from there because I didn't want to deal with a rotted post 10 years from now. I spend under $20 for a metal 3' spike holder that supposedly could be driven into the ground. Living here, with all the rock, that wasn't going to work. I dug out the 3' with my father's old post digger, used a couple bags of Quikrete and poured that around the spike then screwed the post to the brace and the mailbox to the post.

I figure the pressure treated post would cost about what I paid for the bracket, probably less that $100 altogether.

Had a weird thought today. Went out for a ride to make a few shopping stops in my S2000 that is sans radio at the time. It hit me that had I met someone my current age after getting out of the Army back in '71, that person would have been born in the 1800s. Strange what you think about when there's no music to listen to.
