Happy 2019 folks! Back to reality today, ugh.

I was surprised to see a bill from a collection agency this morning. About 6 months ago I had a problem with my water softener. I called the company that installed it since it was less than 2 years ago and still under warranty.

They sent a guy out to replace a part which didn't fix it. So I went ahead and fixed it myself, called them and said I wasn't going to pay to have someone come out and not fix my issue. They said they would take $20 off the bill for the part I replaced, I countered that I would pay for the $5 part they replaced and that's it.

They mailed the -$20 bill so I sent them a $5 check. They sent a bill for the remainder 3 more times, each time I called and said we're fair and square as I see it.

I figure collections agencies pay pennies on the dollar for debt, so I'll cover their cost and be done with it.

Waho, funny that you'd bring up the subject of bills and service. I just got done with an hour and a half bouncing between Chase support and the transaction dispute department. This started back in November and, officially I think, the two disputed transactions have been rectified and a credit issued.

I made two online purchases, one I should have known better by researching first and the other via Shopify that I'm now very cautious about Anyway, I got suspicious of one of the transactions when they sent an email that my order was on its way and gave me links to tracking and their store. Of course neither worked and when I checked my Chase account, both were being paid to the same clothing company in the UK and neither of the purchases were clothing. I immediately file my first disputes in 50 years.

Well they said I'd hear from them in a few days and I kept checking on line and nothing. Dec 17th I called them back and, even though the disputes showed on their website, they closed them because I didn't respond to the letter they sent me. No letter received so they opened them again and said I'd receive a new letter in 7-10 days.

Well I waited until today figuring with the holidays maybe it took longer. No, they said they sent it out on the 17th. After much discussion and me checking if they could forward it to me via email or fax, they said if I signed up for paperless, I would receive it that way. I am signed up for paperless.

So, they sent me to the support people to check if I was indeed signed up and I was. They sent me to disputes and they said I should have the information in "secure messages" where I had looked previously. Had them lead me to where I was looking and yes, nothing. She issued the credit and I still don't know why their system isn't working.

Just to make sure, I signed out of paperless and then signed up again because they're supposed to send me a confirmation of the credit. It will be interesting if I now get it and, if not, I guess I'll be back at support trying to find out what's wrong with their system.

Happy 2019!

My Dad's Facebook was hacked recently also. He passed away in 2011 so I contacted Facebook and they turned it into a memorial page so no one can log in or make posts from it anymore.

Some family members were pretty upset getting messages from "him" trying to get them to buy fancy sunglasses.

Death sentences might be a bit severe, but long prison sentences would seem appropriate.

I got some bad news in my emails right before I got notified you your post. My cousin's 51 year old son with brain cancer has been moved to hospice. They've been running down to Duke, a 6 1/2 to 7 hour car trip every two weeks for treatments in some special procedure. It doesn't look like he'll do any better than my gf's nephew.

I really don't know him very well. I knew him as a kid but as lives move forward you get separated. I sold my cousin and his wife their house back in my real estate days and that was when he was still a young child. It's just been so tough finding the right words thru this whole illness, having just witnessed the stages of the same illness and fearing a similar track.

    Somewhere between here and there
It is often hard to find the right words. A month or so ago a friend of mine at work found out suddenly and unexpectedly that his wife had stage four breast cancer. Then they found out that it had spread. She’s going through treatment but the doctor told them that it would only extend her life but not save it. I’m afraid what will happen to him when she goes. At least he has his daughter and grand daughter living with him so he has some support.

Darn, I just found $5,400 that I never realized existed. Well, I knew I was accumulating but never really checked it out. That's the balance on my CC rewards account. I've had the card for probably 2 decades. Not sure when they started issuing rewards but never really looked into it. I always pay off my balance at month end and use the card for just about everything so it's all positive.

Well, I guess I'm back to burning oil for a while. I came home Saturday and my live in said, "Did you see the big crack in the back of the fireplace?" No, I hadn't but she's shorter than me so she has a different height perspective.

The refractory slab just broke up with about a 5 inch hole in it. I let the fire die off and cool and started search for 1. How to get it out and 2. Sources for a replacement. All 4 slabs plus the screwed in andiron needed to come out for the back slap.

This AM I Got the andiron out which was a pain as the bolts were behind it and I needed a flashlight and mirror to get the T30 into the bolts to unscrew them. Then I saw a few hairline cracks in the base slab and couldn't figure out how to lift it out without using a pry tool to get under the slab, but afraid of the cracks.

Called when they opened up in Canada and got a great Customer Service guy plus a great price. Sunday, the list price I was seeing was $75 per slab and almost another $50 to ship. The price came in at $50 including shipping. He said I'd probably need a pry tool which, as it turned out, I had due to when I moved that handicap lift. Ten minutes off the phone and I had the bad piece extracted. New back ordered with a question about if they can get the bottom slab since it wasn't in stock. Just as soon have it on hand just in case.
