Why do we still call them mods?

Its similar to how we call the automobile a "car". Car came from the word carriage which is what everyone was used to calling a thing that took you somewhere other than walking.

We could have called the the internal combustion driven horseless carriage, but "car" was easier.

We dont call our TV's televisions much, and now they are basically monitors, but we call them TV's still.
We 'dial' a phone number, although rotary phones have been obsolete for years.

I call my devices APV's. I used to just call them PVs, but too many people "hear" that as TV. As in, "Where is my PV?" ... "Your TV?" Adding the A to APV eliminates that confusion.

They still call them mods because the abbreviation mod no longer means modified. Just ask any young gamer and he will tell you mod does not mean modified. He'll say it means a game has been moded.

I use the term device or e-cig.

Or anybody who built their own pc. I have modded my pc so much that the original owner wants it back. Took a $350 pc and turned into a $800 pc.

Why to brits call flashlight a torch
Because we had the language first & that's what they're called. Flashlight is a silly name. They only flash when you turn them on & off in quick succession. :pervy:

Reminds me of an old story...

"I was visiting a friend in America & wanted to take a shower. Despite my best efforts, I couldn't get the hot water to work. I shouted to my friend "Is the hot tap broken?" "The what?" "The hot tap" "What?" "The thing you turn to make water come out" "Oh! faucet"

I did & the bloody thing came off in my hand"

I call mine "my precious!!" Smeagle voice included
:lol::lol::lol:

And when I see APV I think of some sort of off road vehicle.:)

I started referring to my Reo's as mods right after getting into them because that's what Rob calls them.

I think it`s for the same reason that "Hoover" became a noun....mass usage.

I am a Hoover, with my mods.

At one time ECF was the happening place for people making their own mods. From battery boxes bought from Radio Sack with 3 AA batteries to flashlights being modified into vaping devices.....

Those "Pucks" with CE-2 and MAP tanks served me well for a couple years back in the dark ages...and it was always a Puck, not a mod to me...

I started using cigalikes when they first popped up at Mall kiosks. Didn't know anyone else who used them and never got on any web sites so I had to figure out for myself what to call them. For years my wife and I used to call them Smokers. If I was explaining what it was to someone I would say electronic cigarette, but that has too many syllables. Nowadays I refer to them as Vapers. Works for me.

Back in the day you had your cig-sized, your egos, (and Provaris) and things people made (or modded). Even websites had their own hand made thing -- battery box, gripper, flashlight, etc. Some folks called anything with a replaceable battery a MOD. We have had several FDA scares, so some people were always trying to make their own.

So most everything that wasn't thin and tubular became know as a MOD (kind of the IN thing was to have a MOD). Companies began mass producing devices that seemed like the old MOD -- well at least they were square -- and the name stuck.

I resisted for a long time, but even I eventually succumbed.

Not really, no. I was just pondering after finding myself referring to something straight off a mas produced production line as a mod.

Back in the day mods were stuff like Trogg's original Screwdriver & everything else was an e-cig (except e-pipes of course)

I'm sure this comes a lil late, but I may have a reasonable answer?

The Joye 510 was the most popular device in it's day being the #1 choice for salvaging parts, especially the 510 connector. So when China caught onto American evolution of the stick battery, they started competing with modders by copying mod designs. The all inclusive term "mod" became the norm because the copies were close replicas to an actual mod and in many cases they were superior in design and much cheaper. It was then that everyone could enjoy a mod without having to build one from spare parts.

The Chinese "mod" revolution began just after the first release of the Ego battery, effectively making the stick battery obsolete....and the rest is modding history for those that remember.

Had Americans not started the modding revolution [bigger battery] modern day vaping might never have happened.
