I broke even half way through my second month.
You just have to budget.
I set myself a budget from the start that I would not spend more per month on vaping then I did on cigarettes. That has worked fine so far.

That's a great idea and it's also what I plan to do. But first i need to find my ideal setup.
Where I live a buy a pack of cigarettes for 3,7€. So, I would spend 100€/Mo on cigarettes and that will be my budget.

30ml of Halo liquid costs me 19€. So, cause I'm vaping 2ml/day, I need 40€/Mo just for liquids and have 60€/Mo to spend on everything else. It will be fine when already have found my ideal setup...

You can look at it two ways:

1. Go basic, be happy and save money. Both of my parents are long time smokers so I purchased them a double EGO-C double starter pack each and 60ml of juice each. They both live in Canada were cartons are roughly 120.00 dollars At the rate either of them ar going through juice I basically bought them equivalent of 4 cartons based on how long the juice is lasting versus how much they smoked. So I spent around 300 on them and by all measures they got 4 cartons of cigarettes which would have cost 480 dollars. They are already in the black and as happy as can be.

2. Go nuts. Here in California a carton is 50ish dollars. I've spent roughly uhhhhhh 1500 in my first two weeks on my personal stuff. Maybe slightly more. It's become a hobby. Will it slow down? probably, but I'll generally want the next thing even though right now I couldn't be more satisfied with my setup at the moment. Do I regret it, no. I've spent significantly more then that on other hobbies that haven't done a thing for my health.

My theory is that you should basically do what you need to do within your means to quit. A good deal of what's kept me off analogs is the tinkering, researching and trying out new stuff. I've had fun testing different setups and this weekend I spent a bunch of time rebuilding and testing new atomizer designs for my rebuildable atomizer tanks. If you end up spending up to your own personal cigarette budget on this a month but don't smoke anymore it's still a giant win.

Yeah, the prices are very different.
My view is to look for your "perfect" setup over time. You don't need to get there all at once.
I started with a couple of eGos and some carto's.
Every couple of weeks, I look at the budget I set and decide how much of the surplus I can spend on new hardware.
If I have to wait a bit longer to try a more expensive item, I wait another week.
I don't believe I will ever find my ultimate, final setup but I can continue to use what I have already bought as I go.
For me, I just don't want to introduce a negative (going broke) into a positive (quitting smoking)

since you're a gadget kinda guy,,,,,,,not likely

I'm not that kind of girl,,,,,I've been vaping about 16 days, and I already saved money,,,,and that's counting the crummy NJOY kit I bought when I started. But I'm happy with a volt starter kit, a Personal Charging Case and a few juices to try. I have no desire for a mod of any sort,,,,,,,at least at this point.

THIS is exactly what I do,,,,,,,,,I spent over 70.00 per week smoking,,,,,,I won't let myself spend more than that vaping,,,,,,

A pack a day smoker will spend up to $200 a month on 3 cartons these days unless they smoke the imported cheapies that burn up in a minute or so. That gives you quite a budget to spend on ecig hardware. Find the right one and you save from that point on.

Buying a good first PV after reading ECF posts for a while and deciding what's best for them is a money saver. I went from the 510 to the eGo and stayed there for almost 2 years before shelling out for a Provari. Sure, I tried all the Joye tanks and atomizers as they came out. I ignored the cartomizer until I finally tried a Boge LR. I was sold on the Boge cartos and have remained sold even today.

I could have bought the eGo and a box of Boge cartos and been happy at minimum expenditure. But, then I would always wonder if there was something better out there I missed!

We all have to wander a bit before settling down.

After doing the math, I think I was at a shade over 100 a month for cigarettes (and this is with me finding a cheap smoke source in NYC, home of some of the most ridiculous cig taxes in the country). If I keep this up another month or so I'll have broken even, and after that it should end up being pretty cheap, alternating between two devices. VV mod with a tank for at home or anywhere I don't particularly care about being discrete, and prefilled cartomizers for when I'm on the go.

Now, it helps that I've won a few bottles of juice here and there, or found vendors offering up sample packs if you replied to a thread in time. I figure aout 75-80ml of "freebie" juice. Other than that, I am now about $30 away from breaking even according to my .sig banner and my spending spreadsheet. Another contest win has another 75ml of juice arriving today. If I hadn't won, I figure my break even would be pushed out a couple of weeks. But it's almost here. And as of right now I have 3 Twist batteries and the various hardware to use on them. I'm kind of excited by the notion of breaking even. I already see some differences in my bank account as it is ... well, except when I visit IKEA. But my apartment is looking nicer now, so it's still a visable reward. :)

What are the prices for cigs in NYC?
Up here, we're paying 11 or 12 per pack of most name brands. I haven't bought cigs in over two months now so I may be out of date.

At a 1.5 packs a day last winter I was spending about $200 a month on cigarettes. I never considered smoking to be a hobby. It was an addiction.

I never tried an e-cigarette before when I plunked down a little less than $50 for my APV (advanced personal vaporizer). I picked a fairly inexpensive unit, an E-Power 14650 in stainless steel. I bought the starter kit and within the first month I purchased two more E-Powers inexpensively as parts. I also purchased a larger capacity battery charger and more 14650 batteries that would allow me to charge seven of the batteries at once. That way I am only charging batteries once each week. Add in the cost for several juices before I found one that I really liked and the initial cost was under $150, all during the first month of vaping.

Fast forward to today. I smoked my last cigarette almost three months ago. My monthly expense for vaping is under $45 dollars (LR cartos and juice). I don't consider vaping to be a hobby. It's an addiction.

Vaping at regulated 3.7V with LR cartos works for me. I'm still using the first E-Power unit and the two spares are still wrapped up in the cupboard, unused.

There is a lot of pressure on the boards and from vendors to upgrade to a larger and more expensive APV: to something prettier, something bigger, something VV or higher voltage. Spend more for something that produces more vapor or have an entire collection of PVs. I just don't see any good reason to do that. What I have now is serving my needs.

It's like the car I drive. I like a good performing small car so I drive a Subie WRX. I can afford to purchase something that performs much better: like a new Corvette but I'm not going there. I'd rather not have a car that costs more than twice as much as the WRX even if it offers almost twice the performance.

There are always more expensive and perhaps better performing alternatives for nearly everything you can purchase. I drew the line on what I wanted early on.

Ikea is dangerous. I once went in for a $20 desk lamp and rolled out with almost $1500 in stuff.

Okay, I haven't been that bad yet. But my budget wouldn't allow for it. And the other day I actually went in and spent less than I had originally thought I would. Put off getting my Poang chair for another couple of weeks. But got one of the nice uhhhh Deltof display cabinets for some of my collectables. And a Lack coffee table. Bought one lack end table to see if they would work, since they're shorter than what I have now (Which is nice, but older and a little "stuffy"). I'm trying to get away from darker stuff now. Everything from IKEA ... my goal is to get it in birch effect. Once I get out of my apt and into a house, I am probably going to do my whole bedroom in Malm stuff.

I grew up in Germany and the idea behind IKEA is not new to me. Neither is the lower bed. I prefer it. :) So I will eventually get it. My projected savings from vaping this year goto a 14n cruise. I think next year will be bedroom. :)

Good plan but I have found that the best safety net is to NEVER drive a van or truck to Ikea. Only small sub compact cars that cannot carry too much...
