You haven't really quit... ...because you're still taking in nicotine.

Yup, that seems to be the general consensus from both smokers and former smokers alike.

I just had a friend of mine tell me tonight: I have another friend who just quit smoking too Cold Turkey - that's how YOU should've done it.

To me that is just garbage because:

A) I tried cold turkey and it didn't work

B) Why should I suffer going Cold Turkey when I don't have to?

What's a "smoking SIL"? Sorry for the ignorance.

SIL = Sister - In - Law :)

I get fussy when people try to say that I am still a smoker. I expain fairly politely that I do NOT smoke. What you see is not smoke from combustion or pyrolysis but vapor. It is produced by heating a liquid into a gas. Huge difference.

My husband agrees with me that I am now a non-smoker.

Opinions are like a$$holes, everybody has one and they all stink from time to time.
I showed my doc my PV and described the nicotine content.
After checking my blood pressure, he reduced my bp medication and noted in my chart "Pt. recently stopped smoking cigarettes"- all without prompting from me.
That was all the opinion I needed.

The problem is that people really think that nicotine is the problem ingredient in cigarettes, when it's about the only thing in them that is safe for most people. The same folks who complain about our enjoyment of nicotine use caffeine on a daily basis and think nothing of it. But we are evil because we like another substance that is no worse for you than their "drug of choice".

vaping is not allowed inside my workplace, so if you do it, you have to go out with the smokers. Plenty of "looks" and people laughing at the idea. "Just quit if you want to quit, those things are dangerous, looks like a drug pip", I've heard trhem all.

At home, no one complains if I blow a huge vapor cloud in the kitchen. Don't think a Marlboro would have the same reaction.:)

I've recently had the opportunity to demonstrate/explain my Prodigy to 4 different doctors. All four thought it was a great idea and all four ask me for more information so they could provide information to their patients who smoke. One of the four doctors actually has another patient who has shown him her PV, an analog sized one. All four doctors stated they supported the "harm reduction" philosophy for kicking the smoking addiction. Two of the doctors were internists, one was a GP and one was an ER doctor. Two nurses also ask me for additional information to share with friends who smoke.

I think your average doctor will recognize the common sense behind the use of PV's and be supportive. I always carry information/write ups by doctors such as Dr Seigal on the benefits of PV's as well as a card with web sites about PV's.

I just had a friend of mine tell me tonight: I have another friend who just quit smoking too Cold Turkey - that's how YOU should've done it.

This attitude bothers me to no end! Go to a few quit smoking boards sometime and read all the threads about the constant cravings! I've seen threads that say things like 'I quit smoking 6 months ago and I have been craving a cigarette every single day!'. If people want to be miserable every day for the rest of their lives, then more power to 'em! I'll stick with my pv.

I think it's jealousy. Smokers are jealous that we have quit and they have not. Ex-smokers are jealous that we quit so easily with little (or no) cravings and we still get to enjoy our nicotine. As for smokers making fun of people who vape: let 'em! We'll see who's laughing when they get cancer and other smoking related illnesses.

...because you're still taking in nicotine. So says my smoking SIL. *sigh* Will the ignorance never end? Would you call a snuff or chew user a smoker?? Gah.
Share your frustrating misconceptions!

Does your sister-in-law think that people who use the nicotine patch as part of an approved smoking cessation program haven't quit either? :sneaky:

All up in your grill..
You have quit smoking if you no longer inhale smoke. You have not cured your addiction if you are using an e-cig. What we do exists in a gray area in almost every respect. Legally for certain and medically depending on who you ask. There is NO cure all for nicotine addiction and smoking commercial cigarettes is a surefire way to get hopelessly addicted. My opinion? People are gonna smoke and if you are gonna smoke e-cigs are a smarter way to do it even if it is just as addictive.

I ran into a friend I hadn't seen in over a year. Over a year ago he quit smoking. But I noticed he was chewing gum. It turned out that he had been "chain chewing" nicorette gum for almost two years. Yet he'd quit smoking ! Talk about replacing one habit for another !

On a side note, Joe has very little money, so I asked him how he could afford all that gum, which is very expensive and probably costs more than cigarettes. He said the government pays for it 100% on some kind of program he's on. (I think disability.)

Amazing !

I agree. We are really trading one addiction for another, albeit a safer one.
I hate the people who say " why dont you just quit". Because I like to smoke. Its relaxing. And it gives me something to do in those lulls. And should I smoke cigs or smoke ecigs? And that is what is pissing me off about these legislators. Cause when they ban ecigs (im in maryland) thats what they are basically saying. "dont smoke this thing here which as sure as hell fire is safer, smoke these poison sticks instead".

I"m not trading one addiction for another. I've just found a safer way to maintain the same addiction. I'm addicted to nicotine and I'm going to get it by either smoking or vaping. I choose vaping. I am not a smoker. According to my cardiologist and pulmonologist, once I hit one year of not smoking I will be classified a non-smoker. I think I'll take the word of my doctors over the word of someone that hardly knows me.
