Dave that has been my Dream Guitar since 1968 or so. Don't think I'll ever get one now.
Epiphone 1956 Les Paul Electric Guitar | Musician's Friend
I have one genuine Gibson '94 Les Paul and one Fender '79 Stratocaster Anniversary model that I bought new. All my other guitars are Epiphones or Fender Squires, with the exception of an Alvarez Custom shop Acoustic. The Epi's and Squires are working guitars that you don't have to baby. I just do the fret leveling and change the pickups if necessary and take them out to play.
Uh oh...maybe I will have one.
There was a time in the early '70s when I had a '58 Les Paul Jr. ($150) and a blonde Bassman. Why I thought I'd ever need anything else is beyond me.
When I was 15 I worked in a music shop after school, teaching guitar to grammar school kids and working behind the counter. I bought a '66 Cherry Red Ventures model Mosrite and paid it off with my salary and weekend band money. I wish I had it back today, along with the Vox Berkley dual 10" amp I had at that time.
Back then we never realized that vintage guitars would rise in value. I tried out a gently used Vox Super Beatle that a guy wanted $400 for. It was a great amp and would be worth many times that today, but I decided not to buy it after trying it out on a gig. I ended up trading the Berkley on a Fender Bandmaster 2-15" amp that I later sold and then bought an 8-15" Gibson Magnum 800 amp. I used that for years and ran the master volume on 1 in most clubs!
You're right. We didn't know. That's our consolation. A Super Beatle would've been very cool. That Gibson must've rattled the walls for miles! My first Big Boy Amp was a Royal Guardsman. Once after dropping our singer off I didn't fully close my van's back doors. Took off, doors opened and the Guardsman rolled out the back splat onto it's face.

Ooooooooo aaahhhhhhhhh!!! LolDavid Cassidy's guitar player rented that Gibson from me when they were appearing at the Macon Coliseum Centreplex. His amp popped something and there wasn't time to fix it. Back then, sound reinforcement still needed huge amps to get the sound out. He raved about how clean it was afterwards. It was too big for any venue I played, but it was impressive. The grill cloth was metallic blue.
