Mike, if you don't have any 30 atm you can get an LR wrap "and" get good wick coverage if you wrap a dual coil. I did a fairly spread out wrap of 3 turns with some 34...then, did it again, laying the second 3 turns in the spaces between the 1st... kind of hard to see in the pic:

...each individual wrap is just over 2 which makes a parallel total R of just over 1...just a thought...

I've read where people have pig-tailed 34g for LR.

Do you mean 2 parallel pieces of 34 with NR wire twisted on each end to wrap around a wick?...that's how DC's are done on the Ody...serious PITA to do but when you get it right... :vapor::vapor::vapor:...I've only done it a couple times on nextel (I think it'd be way too hot on cotton), but ya, that's a 2 cocktail, dreary rainy night with nothing on TV build

It would give a lot more surface area for heat transfer. Why a serious PITA? Just as a test, I took ~6" of 32g nichrome I have here at work and folded it in half; put a straightened paperclip in the fold and twisted. ~1minute had a pig-tailed wire. If I took 3X as long (3 minutes), I could most likely have made it neater.

ok,

here is my update, mostly for newbies to this method (myself included)

Here are some issues that I have found. Mind you, I am using #400 and not #500 currently.

On both I have made (again 60mm on a cobra) I have found that for some reason the wick at the top burns through the mesh and at some point quickly, it starts to peel at the top. This forces me to take the wick out, and cut a piece off, which in turn leaves me with a wick that is short in the tank now.

I am still getting this odd "popping" that happens inside the cap. I currently have a #400 mesh, at 60mm using 28g that I received.

I am not sure why it is burning through and why I am getting popping.

Are there any safety issues using the 28g as well? It seems to burn awful hot. Oh yeah, using 5 wraps.
