Set the multimeter to 200 ohms on the dial and hold one lead, either color, touching part of the mesh (for example a non oxidized portion) and tap with the other in lots of various places (don't clamp) any numbers that pop up on the screen are bad, that means current is getting through and it is not properly oxidized. Good news is no readings whatsoever.

Reading should be 1

If your meter has a continuity function you can also use that. No beeping , no current and you're ready to go.

Thanks so much!!! This is great.

I maintain different results boil down to

1) secret shorts that not even your mom knows about

2) different air dynamics on the mouth side of the PV

Dead serious on number two. Dead serious.

Cracks me up to hear people fighting about what size air holes are best, for example. Have you measured your oropharynx lately? Empirical results always win, because the physical world was indeed crafted by the Dark One, and only the realm of Mind makes sense.

Platonic Idealist Out.

Sounds more like the dualism of the Bogomils/Cathars then Plato to me :)

After a week or so with these wicks they are still going strong for me. I did roll a wick with the very coarse mesh I got for free with my 500 and it works just as well for me as the 500. When I get a higher watt set-up (soon I hope) I'll try again at higher power to see if I can taste a difference. I'm at about 14 watts now...

14 watts doesn't mean anything if it isn't related to how much wire is used in the coil and the gauge. A coarse mesh with tipping may wet a 3 wrap 32g 1.2 ohm at 14 watts but it would not be able to wet an 8 wrap 3 ohm 32g at 14 amps. The bigger the coil (heating area), more juice is needed. A one wrap 32g is about .4 ohms at 1.2 volts gives you 14 watts and needs very little juice to keep it wet. All mesh wick work, the problem is when you reach the limit of each, if your coil never requires more juice (dry hits) then going to another mesh makes no sense. Has nothing to do with taste.

nope tried 55mm-100 on DID, Cobra and ZAU and I failed miserably. I think it was actually worse as just didnt seem to stay tight. Shorted like crazy on the ZAU with insulator out. I'm pretty sure I have done something wrong but just not figuring it out. I rolled that damn thing until my hands swelled and became useless. I did note that the tighter I rolled the mesh it would roll out from the bottom which would take mesh from the top but I thought I compensated for this by making it long enough to cut the ends off. I tried BJ's way of oxidizing only where the coil would be but no love there. My last ditch effort was to take it out and torch it all but still horrible horrible taste and dratty. So I'm walking away from this for a bit and focusing on the Penelope and Ody, until I figure this out and hey maybe it will go like the DID wick and a week later it will work better!!

So ob your not alone!!

Yeah. Don't get it. I'm the only one failing with this mesh

is that for a 3ml cobra emonty or 5ml as I have a 5ml Cobra and didnt have any luck? Wouldnt wick well at all as I said previously I'm taking a break from this for a bit and going to Vegas with what looks like some cartos, a Pen and Ody!! BAH

Ob, try this, it works perfect for me:

70 mm x 40 mm 4/5 wrap 28 AWG , #500 mesh ~0.8 ohm

if too low ohm for you try 30 AWG 5/6 wraps

ok, point taken - I have no argument with this. :)
To be more specific, this is a 6-7 wrap of 30 gauge kanthal at around 2.4 ohms.... it seems the ohms have crept up a bit from a few days ago, so I'm at 13.4 watts. The mesh is about 110mm.
It's certainly possible that I've been unconsciously tilting the device and thus wetting the mesh through gravitational flow, but I have made an effort to avoid this...

I'm not disagreeing with the premise of 500 mesh being superior at wicking - your experiments prove this is the case. I'm just trying to throw another data-point out there - that large mesh wicks with many coils can work well even if the mesh is not so fine. Since this mesh is of unknown fineness, I guess it's incomplete information - I wish I knew the size of the holes and wires, but I don't :(
When I said 'taste' I was alluding to dry hits :) Sorry I was a little unclear - It's been a long week!

buddies that are having issues with 500 mesh (as in, its WORSE for you)

can your set up handle the 15 second bursts while held vertical, at the wattage you want to vape at? try it with the cap off and tell us what you see. is a single coil getting red before the others? are they all getting red at once?

if you're truly short free, then I'd be willing to guess one or more coils are simply seeing to much air and getting hot too fast

if you have a secret santa short, it will appear somewhere within the 15 seconds

On the edge of insanity..
Ok, so I have been following this thread for some time now and the information provided is some of the best that I have found! Thank you for that :)

Here is my problem. I am using 400 mesh and 32 kanthal. I will oxidize my entire wick 5 times and get my coil wrapped with no problems. Currently I have a 6 wrap 32 kanthal at 2.4 ohms. I can get all the coils to glow nearly evenly, but for some reason I can never get the last coil on the bottom to glow? Then after running it for a while I will notice my ohms change on me. My original 2.4 coil will go to 1.6 and the top coil will start to glow before all the others. Why would this all of a sudden change without me touching anything? I will fiddle with it again and now the best I can get after adjustment is a 2.2 ohm. I will vape it for a while and it goes back to doing the same thing. Now I am sitting at 1.9 ohm. I just don't understand why it seems to be changing by itself with no apparent reason?

Thanks!

poland, and the brassy lands of google
Red, the last coil at the bottom is not really a problem. There are a couple of things it might be, heat rising and heating the coils above them, or the fact that it is closest to the base so is near a heatsink.

The top coil may have too much flying end or, is too loose and getting free air instead of juice, but it sounds like maybe there is a partial short and thus the resistance drops. Or it is too tight on the upper wrap and getting a short that way.

You might try nudging the top of the wick towards the post/screw to minimize the flying end, or while all attached raise the top coil so that it hits a different section of mesh and lays differently.

If all this doesn't do it, maybe a post a good pic to see what is up. :)

That'd be one of the many joys of genny's :)...your kanthal, by virtue of constant heat related expansion and contraction is always moving about...It's a rarity (for me at least) to get a build to work without a tweak here and there for the duration of the coils life...don't sweat it, that's why they invented toothpicks, caps on bic pens, those little plastic swords impaling your olives, etc...

there is one point that I want to make that has only been touched on.

bj only uses nic liquid, and some VG (I think?) and menthol. Because he does not use flavorings, he might not be having the muted flavor issues some of us are having. His main thing is wicking. I have not had wicking issues really, just flavor and heat issues. This could be vastly different for him because of his juice setup.

just saying. Now emonty is a different story. I still cannot figure out how his flavor is better. He is using 28g which I find to be difficult to work with and also really scares me a bit.

I'm using 1% of FA tobacco flavors. Tons of flavor.
