Nice Asdaq...I've been giving this some thought...think I'm going vertical...the DUD's I'm getting both have "out of alignment" air holes so I'll plug those, mark the correct alignment and then clamp the cap into my cheapo mill vice and bore micro holes along that line, you know...just to see

so how do you avoid the shorting of the metal in the hole where it makes contact with the device?
Ob that is another false myth. As long as the coil is isolated it doesn't matter. I even put the (-) leg in the hole with the wick when I don't want to be bothered with the screw. There can be no short if the wick has no (+) contact even if it has a (-) contact.

I think a more accurate Omar Little would be Imagoonnadodatsheetjusahasee...youdig!

"Indeeeeeed."

150 mm of 400 rolled real tight, in the DID, aaaand short. Same thing, right along the seam. Audible continuity only when I touch the leads to the seam. F...M...L

I'm seriously baffled. Haven't felt this MR since I first tried SS. The only thing I can think of us me pounding the hell out of the mesh to make these wicks is exposing more micro hairs that I can't even see. When I light it up with a torch it looks smooth and there is nothing protruding.

well its confirmed, just took out an old 400 wick, no continuity on the seam

i stripped down the mega 400 and rolled it backwards, re oxidized, no continuity. Now its vaping.

note to self: if you bleed your fingers making an obscenely dense wick, cover it with canuckistani brickhouse or turn it inside out before firing

You know, as much as I kid around with the the fold over thing, one thing I do do is I start rolling my wick, get it about half way rolled then un-roll it...then I start to do my "real" roll from the other end...that way the edge (and the pokies) that ends up on the outside has a nice tight inward curve...since doing that I don't seem to have much trouble...just sayin'

edit: never mind ...that's what happens when you have a half written post open for 15 mins...

So I haven't even moved to the 500 mesh yet, and it looks like I might have to put that off for a bit. I keep getting shorts like crazy on the 400 rolled really tight (and still not tight enough; had to stop when I got a blister on my thumb). I think I popped 5 coils today and ended up with grooves cut into the mesh. I'm not quite sure what I need to do differently, but it seems clear what I'm doing now isn't working. It's a shame too, because I could see the wicking working really well but couldn't vape it, because the coil kept freaking out even after it seemed good.

Great feedback guys. So many conflicting posts have been flying about in DIDland about the fill hole screw in and out, kinda realized the #500 stuffed wick hole was causing a vacuum lock but great to have your experience to back it up. My DID std is still running it's 10 wrap 28awg nichrome 1.6ohm 100 mm #500 after 60 mls of juice and scrub with hot water and a toothbrush. It's the most stable setup so far. This combination looks like it will endure forever. Good thing too as my 32 and 30 awg kanthal has been three weeks comming from the US to Oz and still not here:(
Now I want some 28 kanthal, but, waiting makes me cranky.
I will be making my own genny and battery mod out of SS on a friends lathe next week.
What size should I go on the wick hole? 4mm?
I've been thinking about making a tiny adjustable vent controle valve to fine tune the wicking on the fly so will try to work this into the prototype design. Any thoughts on this, or other ideas on making the best of all known genny science?

After just a few days of testing, I am so far happy with #500 - 100 mm in my DID.
Flavour and TH are great, amount of vape is like 20-40% less (depends on pg/vg ratio) than in emonty's videos (have to learn to wrap coil much better).
And I keep the fill hole screwed in and have no leaks. Requirement for me, because I always carry it in my back pocket on provari mini.
Yes, what else, wire is 30 and I getting 1.3-5 ohms and I vape on 3.7-4v (and the most of the time vertically).
When my next DID arrive, I will continue experimenting.
In the meantime, many thanks to BJ for this thread.

Lucid you caught the same bug I did today. I think it's something about mashing that mesh down to make it fit!

It certainly does seem like it. I'm also new to genesis atomizers so we can't completely rule out me not knowing what I'm doing, but in the handful of wick/coils I've made before I never had this many problems with shorts/hotspots. I would get things adjusted and things would look good and then all of a sudden *BAM* bright, hot short. So I'd do a bit more faffing about and get things looking good again, and it'd only last for a minute before problems would crop back up.

I know that genesis devices are subject to the YMMV rule as much or more as other things in vaping, but I'd like to just completely copy the technique of somebody who makes these weeks regularly without major issues (some tweaking will always be expected.) There must be something I can do differently with the rolling/oxidation/seasoning that will allow me to actually build a complete atty.

I tried rolling, oxidizing, unrolling and re-rolling the other way, and oxidizing before making the coil and no luck. I tried the rolling paper trick twice with no luck. I also tried a variety of oxidizing and juice seasoning passes and still nothing.
