I could get a 5 cubic foot one for 159 but it’s a chest and it’s huge.
Yeah, we've got a 5 cubic foot chest at our cabin. It's got a stepped bottom. It holds a quite a lot of nic base in plastic ammo boxes that match the height of the step, leaving enough room for two processed deer above that. :D

If they're already processed, issue them their dayum Green Cards, then get them the puck OUT of there!

Make room for more nic!!!

Actually, they rarely spend more than a few days in detention there. Then the come down the mountain and head north, to get divvied up between the hunters.

But I we might need a bigger freezer there anyway. Last fall, we got three deer. When I picked up the meat, it wouldn't all fit in the freezer. Thankfully, it was pretty cold out that night (lows well below freezing), so some of it stayed in a cooler on the porch and I took it all north the next day.

I used to deer hunt, and love to shoot guns.
But now, I'd never kill an animal.
I'm more of a people person.;)

Thanks, no food in there. That’s why I’m getting a small separate one. I’m thinking four or five liters broken down into 250ml bottles. I found a small one at Menards that is an upright instead of a chest freezer.

That's what I got. I think mine came from Menards. It's big enough for 5 liters. Half a liter in small bottles in a plastic tub on the top shelf and the rest in 1/2 liter bottles on the bottom. The front opening door is so much more convenient than a chest.

The one I got has a wide temp range. It can go from freezer temp through regular fridge temp. It hasn't got auto-defrost so I have to de-ice it once in a while. Not a big deal, I wouldn't look for an auto if I had to replace it.

Auto-defrost freezers are less than ideal in any case. They defrost by periodically blowing warm air around in their interior.

Agreed. I wrap mine in bubble wrap to provide some insulation during the defrost cycle. I have no test other than my taste but it is my theory that that the bubble wrap will mitigate the warming. I guess I'll find out ten years from now it my theory holds.
PS: It is more likely that my daughter will find out.

I don't know how warm things get during the defrost cycle, but if it can melt the frost on the freezer walls it seems like it would melt the frost on the bottles. In the time it takes me to manually defrost the freezer the frost on the bottles doesn't even start to soften. That's got to be better for the nic.

I don't remember exactly how long the "defrost" cycle lasts in a frost free freezer, but when I had to get mine repaired, the guy said it is supposed to do a really short heating cycle every 24 hours to keep the frost from building up inside the freezer. If it is just running long enough to deal with 23 hours worth of frost, I'm not really worried about my stash. I would think I would notice spoiled food from the freezer if it was really getting warm enough inside the box to melt things.

OK, that makes sense. I didn't know they ran that often. Shouldn't be problem.

It likely isn't. My view:
  • A fridge is better than room temperature.
  • An auto-defrost freezer is better than a fridge.
  • A manual-defrost freezer is better than an auto-defrost freezer.
How much better? I don't know.
  • A cryogenic freezer would be best, but even I don't have one of those!
Use the best thing you've got. If you're shopping for a dedicated freezer for your nic, get a manual defrost one. They're less expensive, and for the purpose at hand, they're actually better.

Different mfgs. use different specs, but several decades ago, I used to sell, among other things, appliance parts. Iirc, most units back then ran several times per day, or based it on how long the compressor was running.
It really shouldn't affect the internal temp much at all. Not even as much as opening it to inspect the contents. And to tell the truth, I'd be more comfortable with a frost free, which is designed to maintain the internal temp even during defrost cycles. They often use the heat from the compressor to clear any frost, or use heat strips directly on the coils (not inside the unit) and the temp in the freezer would fluctuate less. Like Cats said, it's not like it's trying to melt big blocks of ice built up over months. And it's designed to maintain an internal temp, irrespective of the defrost cycle.

Desirable yet unattainable?
Yup. If I had a Gulfstream, I wouldn't mind the trips to Europe, and I'd probably visit those folks I have invitations from in far-flung places like South Africa and Australia. Being able to stretch out and vape the whole way would make it almost pleasant! :sneaky:

Anyone converted parts of their house to keep all this gear?
As the boxes of gear and banks of freezers began to grow, many of us have taken to living out of our vans or in tents out back.
It's all good!:D
