Just got some extra batteries, do I need to charge before storing or store as is?

My experience, take it with a "grain of sale".

I've bought several 18650 batteries in the past 2 months and some 21700s that came with mods.

Every single one of these batteries showed a 3.5v charge right "out of the box" on my charger. So I am guessing this is what manufacturers charge them to for optimal storage.

You definitely don't want to store them at full charge (from what I've been told).

I'd check the voltage before storage- who knows how fully charged they are before you get them- and each could be different. I forget, and don't have the time to look it up, but I believe it's Mooch that has a chart showing how long they'll last at 100% charge vs. 60%(?). They don't last as long fully charged.

I'm thinking 60 percent is optimal for storage, but don't trust me on that. I just know it's not best to store full.

Quick question..... I did not have one in my stash, they make me nervous, but a did buy the skeleton key clone on clearance to have on hand if everything else dies. Is owning a clone bad with a mec?

Update watched some YouTube and I feel comfortable with it now.

There are things one needs to know to reduce risk. I was wary of them at first. Now, I feel entirely confident. I always use a well charged, undismayed battery, check my atty on a regulated mod, and batteries are always in a plastic case. And I never carry a mech in my pocket with the battery installed. Actually, I leave all my unprotected mechs at home. I do have some with protection that I’ll bring out, like my Lunas.

I’d advise, if you plan to use them some day, last resort kind of thing, get familiar with them now. Hopefully you’ll have some way to refresh your memory years down the road, but I’m not counting on having the resources we have now - like this forum.

That's what I plan, I always build on my ohm box and all of my mods are regulated.
I will definitely read up more in the battery and mec thread.

I just read the instructions for a tesla punk stick. I had it stuck in a bypass mode. Yikes! Anyhow, I went to tesla and found out they recommend a 18650 cell(discharge current should be above 40A). I do not run above 22 watts. Is this overkill? Right now I'm just running Samsung 25r (green). I was planning on buying a few batteries. Now, I'm having to research and I'm dumbfounded. I know someone here also bought a Punk but forgot who?

P.S. These are not pocket friendly.

    Somewhere between here and there
You should be fine. The 40A rating is for maximum output. They have to do that to protect themselves from legal action. I run the same batteries and almost never go over 25 watts on a single battery unit.

Thank you! I was almost in a panic mode thinking I messed up.

I think I'm done with everything, might get another liter of nicotine next month and hope for the best. I now need to organize and set things up.
There might be good sales next week for nic for St. Patty's Day if you can swing it. Otherwise shoot for Easter sales.

I didn't realise they lost that much capacity in storage. I use all my batteries. They get charged and then sit in the rack until their turn comes. Never kept notes but I'm pretty sure each one spends more time sitting on the rack than it does in a mod. Normal indoor temp is 72 year round, which is 22 Celsius. So they could lose quite a lot of capacity in a year, maybe not far off 20%.

I wonder what happens if you fully charge a battery, leave it for a week or two, then use it for a few days and take it down to 3.6. And does a battery lose capacity while in use at the same rate as it does sitting around charged.

Probably doesn't matter though. I replace them after a couple of years anyway. With multiple mods running at different power levels and used more or less often I never was able to keep track of how fast individual batteries are running down. That would take some serious note keeping.

All that thinking is giving ME a headache.

I got in a green/black armour pro cover from Amazon.

It's a snug fit, and no way the battery door will accidentally open.

Controls work fine with it on.

(The usb is centered in the cutout, it looks odd due to camera angle.)
