"5:17 Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish, but to fulfill."

I know that Christians aren't under the law, but what about the 10 commandments? Same thing applies to that too?

Since jews do not accept Jesus as the messiah, and believe they are still under the law, why don't they still sacrifice animals like they did back then? What has changed?

"The scribes and the Pharisees were “top drawer”, an elite group that set the standard everyone looked up to and tried to copy. These are the ones in Mt 23 who wore broad phylacteries (a box containing scripture) on their arms. They were made to cover the whole forearm, thinking this made them more righteous. On their heads were bands holding boxes with scriptures inside"

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's the funniest thing I've ever read, what a bunch of idiots!:lol::lol::lol:

Jesus basically reordered the 10 with "Love God...love your neighbor...they are summed up all but one.

Jews don't accept the Son so therefore don't accept the Father. God said "I will give you this...I will be your God...you my people......now why did they lose the land?

They don't have a temple to sacrifice in...

They don't do sacrifices anymore because they don't have a temple? I don't understand that. I have no idea why they lost the land to the Palestinians. I just know they have been fighting over it forever.

They don't have anything anymore. No lineage (destroyed 70 ad) ...no temple (destroyed 70 ad)..no priestly worship system..(destroyed in 70)...no claim that God dwells with them...(the cross)
The Israel of today is not the same one in the Bible.

My question is this. How are Christians supposed to handle this persecution? One verse says to turn the other cheek, another one says dont throw your pearls before swine, and so on.

I think that most look at 26-37 in the wrong way......what Jesus was trying to get across was this...."if you think you can attain righteousness by your own actions you are wrong.....you would have to be impossibly good to achieve this.....you would have to avoid sin even in your thoughts, you would have to perform superhuman actions in order to achieve it...the true way is something else completely".....he isn't telling us he expects us to turn the other cheek, he's telling us that because it's impossible to turn the other cheek we need to realize we can't be righteous under our own power......

no, he said we weren't under the Levitical codes (sacrifices, stonings, kosher foods, etc) but he reaffirmed the Mosaic law (Ten Commandments) specifically when he said "Love the Lord your God.....and your neighbor as yourself".....these were the descriptions of the two tables of the law used in the OT as well as the NT.......(notice Deut 6:5 in the next post)

actually, there was a reason for that....
Deuteronomy 6
4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. [a] 5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

Unfortunately they got to the point where wearing the law was more important than following it.....

they were defeated in succession by the Babylonians, the Persians, and the Romans (and probably a few in between that I have forgotten) not to mention everything that has happened to the region since Rome fell.....

So, we aren't supposed to "Turn the other cheek" so to speak, and allow them to walk all over us?

I think that part was symbolic, and not literal, the tie them on your foreheads thing.

no more than we're really supposed to pluck out our eyes or any of the other impossible tasks we would face if we took this section of the Sermon on the Mount as a new Ten Commandments....Christ's intent was to show us the impossibility of attaining righteousness under our own power instead of through his......

I have been following along with the Bible study and just want to thank Southern Gent for all the time he has put into it and to say "hello". Sometimes we read the Word but don't actually explore the deeper meaning of some of the difficult passages (difficult for me to totally understand anyway). This study is so helpful in exploring the depths of the Savior's heart and the applications for our own life. So, once again, thanks for taking on this Bible study group, Southern Gent.
