Today, I went to the barn where I boarded Penny when she died, and where she's buried. We planted a tulip tree over her grave as a marker. The boy who owns Jasmine was in school, but his dad was there, and we talked. They want me to come groom Jasmine and maybe help the dad with horsemanship. I'm undecided as to how much to get into it, but I do like the family and as he said, I think we're friends. I'm just very much in limbo now as far as horses are concerned. I want to still be in touch with horses in some way, but how much, with who, when? I can't figure it out, and I feel that when the time is right, something I feel right about will come up.

Meanwhile, I've begun to realize that tutoring has given my life some purpose and shape in this difficult and depressing time. I'm really glad I have that.

A tulip tree is a lovely tribute to Penny and will grow more beautiful with each passing year.

People really do need help with horses so if you want to help the dad with horsemanship, I am sure he will appreciate it.

You are really good at coming up with ideas for tutoring and you really try to get the kids involved. You notice how they are doing and work on their weak points. Tutoring seems like a good fit for you. I am glad you have something you feel truly involved in.

It is difficult losing a pet after many years together. There is a very real sense of loss and grief.

Good morning, Voltnics.

We had rain. It probably hasn't amounted to much but I will take what I can get. It is still cloudy and cool. I may get a fire going in the woodstove since I so enjoy coming into a warm house after going outside to work. I also like leaving the sliding door open so I can hear all the birds singing and cheeping while I am inside where it is warm.

They have been working Hubby hard at the plant. I hope we can get the shade cover up this weekend. It really is all on Hubby since he has the muscles and the know how.

SandySu - I hope you are on your way to feeling a little bit better about losing Penny. The many years you had together are a tribute to a partnership that was wonderful and fulfilling. You always took good care of Penny and she had a good life because of you.

Raven - You have had a loss, too, and I am hoping that you are recovering, even if just a little bit, from losing your sister.

'afternoon, Volties.

We didn't get any rain at all from the warm front coming through and now the AC is running. The thermometer says 90 and we started out at 56 when I got up.

Sandy, something will come along that peaks your interest with horses, don't fret about it or push it. In the mean time your tutoring duties seem to keep you fairly busy and provides some satisfaction, I think.

I've got almost all the garden covered in mulch. I'm putting down a six or eight inch layer in hopes of keep the weeds at bay for most of the season. Another advantage is that the weeds only root in the mulch which makes them really easy to pull when it is time to clean them up. The disadvantage is that it takes about sixteen cart loads of mulch which means rake mulch free, shovel it into the cart, drag the cart to the garden, shovel/dump (if possible) the mulch out and repeat.

moanin', Voltatics

We did get a little rain last night. Not really enough to do anything other than make the grass not crunch when walking on it. There may be some more today, showers are in the weather guess. It's a very humid 70 outside already so there actually may be some thunder storms.

I got the garden completely mulched but still need to do the blueberry pen. I want to use "screened" mulch for that. I built a screen, sieve, out of hardware cloth that works well, albeit slowly, and gets out all the twigs and such. Once done with that I have a Tom Sawyer project, paint the fence, LOL.

My grandbaby that wasn't due until August was born yesterday morning at 12:40 a.m. May 16, she weighs 620 grams about 1 lb 6 oz, and is 11.5 inches long. She is so so tiny. She is breathing on her own right now and maintaining her blood pressure. She will be in the hospital until August. Just keep my grandbaby & me and my family in your prayers.

I have never posted in this thread, but I have been reading the posts here lately. After reading your post I just had to post. Your grandbaby is so precious, and what an amazing story to tell her one day :) I will keep her in my thoughts and prayers :)

When I tutored today, the girl asked about vampire bats. She said her brother told her they were in the school basement. I told her there might be bats, but vampire bats live in South America, and the kind around here eat insects, so they are helpful. Then I asked her if she wanted to read about vampire bats, and she said yes, so I found out some interesting info. Actually, they are in South America, Central America, and Mexico. And from the little map, it looks like they might be in the very southern parts of Texas. But they don't come this far north. There was lots of other interesting info, too, like they don't suck blood, they bite their prey and then lap up the blood that flows out of the wound. And they are smaller than I thought. Very much tinier than the bats here, which aren't much bigger than a mouse. If they don't get their dinner of blood for 2 days, they die, so some female bats will regurgitate the blood they drank to feed friends. And they are friendly to people, too. It sounds like they'd make good pets if they didn't need constant blood!
