Don't you own a pair of gloves? :D

Yeah - I do - several in fact. And I do where them when I'm hauling in firewood or stacking it. But when it comes to feeding the fire, I need all of the tactile feedback that I can get. I'm a bit of a clutz. Most of this firewood is split and is out to get me.

OK, here's your heavy thought for today: infinity. Are there different infinities? Are some larger than others? I asked this question of myself when I was a kid, and I came up with the answer, Yes. Let's say you have all the whole numbers, 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. into infinity. Then you can have all the even numbers, 2, 4, 6, 8, etc. into infinity. Doesn't that make the whole-number infinity larger than the infinity that only has the even numbers? I remember asking a grown-up this, and the grown-up said, No. One infinity can't be larger, since they are both infinite. I didn't believe him, and I'm still not sure. So imagine my excitement when I heard about Georg Cantor the other day. He had the same idea I had as a child, only the way they explain it is infinitely (pun intended) more complicated than the way I thought of it as a child. Still, it's fun to have my childhood concept validated, even if by a guy who spent a lot of time in mental hospitals. See The odd genius who showed that one infinity was greater than another for something brief about Georg Cantor.

This is infinitely beyond my scope of thinking. :p To me infinity means endless which is beyond my imagination. It's an interesting subject but one I don't think can be proven. In Canton's example about a straight and the space around it, it would seem like infinity could be different sizes. But should you consider the space around it?

Take a circle. It has no beginning and no end so to me it's infinite. So you draw a larger circle. Now you have 2 different size infinite circles.

In the case of odd and even numbers into infinity...I'd say "no" they would be the same size. I'm on the fence on this one.

Right. It's something to contemplate, not necessarily answer. And when you think of practical, day-to-day life, it doesn't matter. But still, I contemplate these things a lot. Why? A bored mind?

The first time I got even a concept of infinity was when I was pretty little. I was sitting at the table eating breakfast, some sort of cereal. My mom had left the cereal box on the table, and on it I saw a picture of a little boy eating cereal with the cereal box next to his bowl of cereal on the table. On that box in the picture was the same cereal box, with the little boy and cereal box, and on that box was the same picture … You got it. Infinity! I sat there, with a spoonful of cereal halfway to my mouth and said, "Wow!"

A fun way to contemplate infinity, which I showed my daughter when she was little, was the local pizza parlor. Inside, 2 facing walls were mirrors from floor to ceiling. If you looked into one of them, you saw infinite reflections. Another "Wow!" I used to love that pizza parlor! Not only did they have good pizza, they had infinity!

It is fun to contemplate things we don't understand. It's not a sign of a bored mind, it's curiosity which I have plenty of but I haven't given this subject much thought. I think about space a lot. I'm a sci-fi junky. I wonder if the universe has and end although I've read that it's expanding. Are there more than one universe? I wonder if there are other life forms out there. It would be pretty arrogant of us to think we are the only ones. I try to wrap my head around space and time. I wonder if I went back in time if I could really change the future or what would happen to me if I were to go forward in time and there was no more time or future. Those are the things that interest me.

I think about space, too, and for me, it's woven in with infinity, Einstein's theory of curved space notwithstanding. I mean, what happens if you travel out in space infinitely? You don't come to a brick wall with a sign saying, The End, do you? And I can't wrap my mind around curved space. I just don't believe in it. Maybe that's like believing the world is flat, but still … Maybe a straight line is impossible to actually achieve, but we can think of it, and that would keep going outward forever.

I bet we don't really know if the whole universe is expanding. Maybe our galaxy or parts of it near us that we can see, but what about the rest of it? Maybe in some places, it's contracting. Who's to say?

As for life forms out there somewhere, I bet there are. I also think they may not be humanoid. Just because we developed this way on our planet doesn't mean other life forms on other planets would evolve the same way. Conditions on another planet may be very different, causing evolution in a whole different direction. Any intelligent life forms might think very differently from us, too. For instance, maybe they aren't curious explorers, like we are. Maybe they aren't interested in finding out if we exist like we are about whether they exist. Maybe they just don't care.

I'm not saying this is so, just throwing thoughts out there. Most sci-fi books and movies have life forms pretty much like us. I think it's more likely they are different than that they are similar.

I think most movie aliens are humanoid because how would they operate a spaceship without hands and fingers but then would then need a spaceship? They could be pure energy and just think where they want to go. It would be pretty hard making first contact with a pure energy life form. ;) Yes, it's a fascinating subject and I wish I was born around 200 yrs later so I could explore space and find out some of these answers.

Interesting! Of course, to me, not knowing much about it, it could be some piece of equipment or something sent up from Earth. Who knows?

Some many years ago, I got really into reading about UFO sightings. Some of my vague memories are of a blackout in Washington, DC, where strange lights were seen in the sky during the blackout. That was in the 1960s, I think. I also remember seeing photos of one of the first manned spacecraft and the astronauts seeing a UFO out their window. And what about this story, which I read back then? INTERRUPTED JOURNEY: John G. Fuller: 9780440141150: Amazon.com: Books Did you read it? If not, it's well worth a look. There were zillions of other books and incidents I read about, but these stand out in my mind after all these years. If you're currently into it, maybe you can refresh my memory about Washington and that early astronaut sighting.

What's even worse is people don't proof read their posts before submitting and auto-correct on tablets etc can be rather annoying trying to figure out what they meant. I proof read my posts but I always seem to miss something but spot it immediately when I see it quoted.

AND - "You're" Not The Only One - That's one of the reasons I tell people not to quote "Me" to quickly and give "Me" a chance to edit any mistakes . . . Which there usually are NO MATTER how often or how much time I take to write it correctly and edit "My" post . . . Worse is even no matter what I have learned and/or know about grammar - I always make mistakes, especially given "My" learning disability and forum of dyslexia (as I know so many other people are too) . . . SO - Hopefully people will not be to harsh with "Us" too . . . Just Sayin' . . .;)

 "Infinity" - Oh Boy ! ! ! While so far very interesting - Not getting involved in that discussion . . . Just Sayin' . . .

NOW - I Really Hope - that EVERYONE who is facing the NEW WINTER STORM will Stay Warm, Take Care, and Be Safe . . . Personally, when I am up North - I'm wearing Sweat Clothes, a Scarf, and Gloves even in the House or Mill when it is that COLD . . . Not NICE ! ! !

No, I haven't read that book. Too bad it isn't available on Kindle. Washington is mentioned in this book?

It probably was. A spaceship we built or stole from an alien. It's curious though why the video went to blue screen after 2 minutes. Makes you wonder if NASA didn't want us to see it.

No, this was a couple who lived near Boston if I recall correctly. They were Betty and Barney Hill. They were driving home one night when their car died for some unknown reason. Then, what seemed like minutes later, the car started again, and they went home, only to notice it was about 2 hours later than it should have been. Then they started both having nightmares about aliens. They finally went to a hypnotist who hypnotized them, and under hypnosis, they remembered what happened on that lonely road in the middle of the night. When their car stalled, they were abducted into a UFO, given physical exams, and Betty talked to one of the aliens, who showed her on a star chart where they came from. Then the aliens let them go again, and they were back in their car, having forgotten the entire abduction till the hypnosis brought it out. That's the main story as I remember it, but after all these years, I could have gotten details wrong. Anyway, I thought the story sounded a lot more convincing than many other abduction stories I had read, some of which decidedly sounded like fantasy.

I was trying to look up the Washington UFO visit I recalled in the news and found this, which I think was an earlier incident. 1952 Washington, D.C. UFO incident - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I can't find anything like what I remember, but maybe it was NYC, not Washington. See http://ufodigest.com/article/continued-mystery-blackout-1965-and-fireball

Speaking of blackouts, this is interesting. Blackouts & UFOs

I heard of this before: the moon as a base for aliens. U.F.O. And Reported Extraterrestrial On Moon And Mars

Anyway, believe what you will, mysteries like this are certainly interesting. Like infinity, there's not much that we can do about it and it doesn't really affect our daily lives.

OK if we go with the alien theory, then maybe the aliens didn't want us to see it. But if it was them, they'd know ahead of time that they'd be on camera and have killed it before any showed.

It's conceivable that if aliens are visiting us, the government doesn't want us to know about it for fear of panic. Think what it would do to the stock market, for just one facet of what would happen if word got out.

You remembered the story correctly. I read one of the reviews and they practically quoted you. I'll check out the other links later. Some of the stories I've read sound plausible but most sound like fantasy or sci-fi.

But we won't panic... Just get Bill Pullman, Will Smith, and Jeff Goldblum together.... :D:lol:
