I have this one

and I've pounded the hell out of a thick piece of meat without bending any of the blades. You must be very, very strong.

You have to pound the meat on something soft too, like a wood chopping block, or maybe a self-healing cutting mat - something that the blades could permeate into in case you do pound too hard. I'm pretty wimpy right now, so...

Where is everybody? Did you all lose your power in the storm last night? Our storm produced nothing. It rained all around us but the Olympic shadow saved us again. :thumb:

I finished reading Childhood's End. It started out great but then fizzled at the end. I'm now reading Stranger in a strange land and it's pretty good so far.

My favorite all time book was Valley of the Horses by Jean M Auel. It was book 2 of the Clan of the Cave Bears series. I didn't know it was book 2 until I started reading it so I had to read Clan of the Cave Bears next so I could better understand what happened to Ayla. Then I read Valley of the Horses again and enjoyed it even more.

In case anybody is wondering, last nights storm just grazed Rave's place. She got about 2" of ice pellets and snow.

Wow! I just got home, and on the car radio, I heard how much snow the Midwest and East Coast got. We had some minimal snow flurries early, but it was sunny and bitter cold most of the day with a gorgeous sunset this evening as I was driving home.

I was busy all day because first I had a haircut, then tutoring, and after that, grocery shopping. Now, off to eat some of the food I just bought for dinner.

Sitting down, facing forward.
I spent an hour or so walking the snow blower, YET AGAIN!, then a little shovel time to clean up the edges. No real melting, it never got over 25 today. We did miss the worst of the snow, the original prediction was for 10-14 inches but we only got about 4 or 6. Enough to be a pain. What made it bad was that it started as rain, changed to sleet around 10 last night, then snow by midnight. So now everything paved has a coat of ice under the snow, like all the sidewalks, side streets and roads. Is it Memorial Day yet?

I'm glad you didn't get hit as hard as some places. :)

We didn't get hit at all. The minimal snow flurries are usual stuff around here, and it was just a dusting.

I was thinking of you, Awsum, when I heard about this latest snowstorm. Also, all the folks in the Midwest like Rave, Q, and 0mg. Did I miss any Midwesterners? If I did, sorry. The ice part of it doesn't sound like fun! I'd rather have 3 or 4 inches of snow than a half inch of ice!

We had a lovely, sunny day, though it was colder than I would have liked. We're having lows in the single digits with the occasional minus, and highs in the teens with the occasional 20s. There's about an inch of fresh snow covering the old worn-out snow that's still there from previous storms. Just enough to make it look good again, not enough to hinder anything. That inch happened a couple of days ago.

This morning, I saw my first robin -- 2, actually -- in one of the crabapple trees outside my window. There were a bunch of mixed birds there, including the robins. I know I saw starlings, and there was another bird, too, with some dusty brown, maybe a female cardinal? I couldn't see it well enough, and then all but the robins flew away when they sensed me watching them through the window.

ECF was down most of the day, but I see it's back now.

I never did post a tutoring report from yesterday.

I had the kids read the instructions for making rock candy, which we'll do when we get the ingredients together. I left a list with them, and they are to round up as much of the stuff as possible. Then I'll see what's missing tomorrow, and we'll figure out how to get the rest of the stuff needed. Meanwhile, I got together some info on how crystals form, and I'm going to take a small box of various crystals for them to see. They always like that hands-on stuff.

Today, I went through my bag of teaching materials and weeded out a lot of dead stuff and printed out more worksheets, enough to last me a long while.

Yesterday, surprisingly, the little girl was more rambunctious than her brother. I can never figure out what makes them tamer some days and wilder others.

She asked me about the word search I was supposed to make from words she supplied. Bad tutor! I hadn't done it. But she had plenty of word searches using vocab words, never fear. Meanwhile, the boy decided he'd rather do crossword puzzles, and I had some, and he did one. We also rather unsuccessfully went over the vocab words they were supposed to study. The girl just about refused to even try to read hers.

She still hasn't written her movie review, so I told her to just write whatever she wanted, a story or something. So while I was working with her brother, she was copying a story out of a book. We discussed plagiarism. The boy and I already had this talk, and he was backing me up, all holier-than-thou. Still, it was good he was on my side.

These kids really need a lesson in what's right and wrong, like cheating, a lecture they've heard more than once, lying, that kind of thing.

Also, the 3 chairs in their study area are 2 metal folding chairs with cushioned seats and a very luxurious padded leather rolling office chair. They both want the office chair and fight over it constantly. I came up with an idea yesterday that may be a good one. We'll see. You never can tell which ideas will work and which won't. The rule will be that whoever is reading aloud gets the desirable chair. This should make them eager to read, which they resist now, since what I give them to read is not easy.

Actually, the boy breezed through reading the instructions for making rock candy. They both didn't know what a saucepan was, but when they saw the photo, then the lightbulbs went on over their heads.

We ended with a Mad Libs, and this time, both kids played. It was a funny one, too. I'm glad we ended on a good note.

Nope but every time I click the down arrow on a thread it takes me to the first post, the wheel spins for awhile and stops at the top of the last page. Quite annoying but they are still working out some naughty bugs.

It's still really slow here. I guess everyone else gave up on it till tomorrow. So I think I'll say good night early. I've been sleeping a lot lately, probably fighting something off. Maybe the flu? No real symptoms. But I've been going to bed early and taking lots of naps. Then, of course, I'm waking up at sunrise.

Tonight, here are apple blossoms. Soon … soon … (I saw a couple of robins the other day, so spring is on its way, though it's terribly cold out, and you'd never guess it's coming.)

Do you click on the down arrow in front of the thread description? If so, does it take you to the last unread post? It doesn't for me.

I don't. I don't even know what you mean. If my post is on a later page, I just go to History in my Internet browser and click on the page I was at before. That takes me back to where I want to be.

Sorry it's so small but do you see the dark blue arrow I put on this screenprint pointing to the down arrow in front of the thread title? Clicking on that arrow will take you to the last unread post in that thread (when ECF fixes this). This is so much easier than the way you are doing it but if your way works for you than that's fine. Other people use "My Posts" but this way is way easier, at least it is for me.

Ya know it took me till last week to figure that out? I was like: "hmm what does that little arrow thingy do? What? It takes me to the first unread post?!" shakehead.gif It took me five months to actually notice it.

I still don't see the arrows or Settings. But there's an option on my screen that says View First Unread. My screen may be different because I use a different browser, Safari. I have a Mac, so lots of things are different for me.
