Good morning, Voltpeeps.
I have a house to clean and some errands to run today.
I had a talk with Hubby about the garden. I told him I've been a bit depressed and I have decided that one reason is the size of the veggie garden. It's gotten out of hand. I spent hours and hours picking strawberries which were pretty small and beans. I think I'm tired of spending so much time working on that garden! My summer is over and I didn't have the time or energy to work with my little horses much. I explained to him that it just isn't all that fun anymore with the picking and prepping and blanching and freezing taking over my entire summer.
We decided to consider what is most important to us to plant so this winter, when we go through the seed catalogs, we are going to bear that in mind. The stuff I can
buy that is pretty tasty from the store we will not plant.
I can
buy pretty tasty frozen green beans from the store and they take forever to pick from the garden. So, maybe we will plant fillet beans only. Those beans are absolutely delicious fresh and they can't be frozen.
I also can
buy delicious frozen strawberries for smoothies, so maybe we should be planting raspberries. Raspberries are expensive, one of my favorite fruits and are fairly easy to pick.
I didn't plant garden peas this year because the frozen peas from the store are pretty tasty and they are another crop that takes forever to pick and then a lot of time to shell. I was happy not to have to work so hard.
Also, maybe we need to plant less of a few things. There's no need for us to supply veggies to the neighbors!
He took the news better than I thought he would. I am so glad. I explained that I am feeling worn out and like the fun has gone out of my summer. I do want a garden but I hope we can keep it more fun sized next summer. If I were in my twenties and/or in a better climate, this giant garden would be more doable but as it is, it is a lot of work and I don't want to work quite this hard. I like having time and energy to do other things.
