Don't inhale?

Reading through the Library, I was shocked to find this:

E-Cigarette vapor is not drawn directly into the lungs, as many smokers do with a tobacco cigarette. The lungs do not 'suck' on the ecig; a direct inhale is not used. Instead, the vapor is first drawn into the mouth, using the cheeks to create a vacuum, then inhaled if desired.

I've been vaping by inhaling directly into my lungs for years. Like, well, a cigarette. The few fellow vapers I know in person do the same.

Is this what's considered normal now? Have I been doing it wrong all this time?

No no no...try and picture something else that is smoked...THAT is inhaled directly. When you used to smoke, you mean to tell me you straight RIPPED the cigarette with a lung pull like something else one might smoke? I've tried that once or twice, and a coughing fit would ensue. Like most people, I draw the smoke/vapor into my mouth, then inhale...if I inhaled straight through like you say you do, I'll cough right away. Though some things are consumed that way though.

Well, yeah.

When I smoked cigarettes (and, long ago, other things) I'd pull straight into my lungs. I'd keep my tongue flat and my cheeks against my teeth, channeling the smoke back directly into my lungs.

I thought what I'm describing was normal. Am I seriously the only one that did/does it this way?

Lots of vapers do this. I'd say search for it but i wouldn't know the right terms to search. Maybe search lung hit...? Duno but its pretty beast mode if you ask me. Unless your using low nic i guess.

You CAN vape that way, I think the article is just saying you don't HAVE to vape that way. Since the nicotine delivery is different, and half of vaping is getting the flavor for most of us, you can treat it like smoking a cigar. I guess I'm a little weird in that I always smoked this same way, mouth draw then inhale.

I smoked cigs that way, yeah, but I don't vape that way. I do a very light draw while firing my PV, just filling my mouth with vapor, then inhale. I just tried vaping your way, and it produces more vapor (have to draw harder), but I get less flavor.

I think it varies from individual to individual. I think most people do the mouth suction, or milkshake technique.

When I smoked (feels good saying that :D) I think I used both techniques. When I began vaping, I experienced the reaction of coughing as I guess I was inhaling the vapor into my lungs, or at least attempting to, and more experienced vapors advised me to use the mouth suction technique.

It was also then that I learned that inhaling into the lungs was not required to absorb the nicotine in vapor, that most is absorbed in the mouth and throat.

Whoa.

You're right. Much nicer flavor with a mouth fill and then an inhale. I may well switch.

I know a lot of new vapers that use your technique and choke. I did as well. It seems easier on the lungs etc to pull off the e-cig into the mouth, then inhale into the lungs. My aunt and I just had this conversation yesterday. She was shocked to find out that she didnt cough when doing like this. It may have saved her from giving up on e-cigs completely.

I read that same article and wondered the same thing about smokers and vapers. Who the hell does it directly into the lungs?!?! That must be what's causing all the lung cancer.

I never did it that way and I didn't think anyone else did either. Just to try it, I did do the direct into the lungs vape a couple times, but I like the "milkshake technique", as Baditude puts it, better.

For me the cigarette addiction was 1/3 the actions of smoking, 1/3 feeling it hit my lungs after the inhale from the mouth, and 1/3 the nicotine. I don't think vaping would've been as satisfying or successful in helping me quit if I didn't inhale the vapor and feel it in my lungs.

I did find it interesting to read about the size of the smoke particles and vapor particles and where the most effective nicotine absorption was though.
