Hey Arjay

I'm also in Australia and have had a very similar experience. I got 30 3.5's. The very first box I opened worked quite well, but it's been down hill ever since. I've tried about 20 so far and I can't get any more than a few drags before I get that burnt taste. I have a Little Sister so I've been able to dial down the voltage. That helped but I still need to let them sit between drags. And the performance (vapour/flavour) with it dialled down is pretty ordinary. The only mod I tried was to cut the wicks near the slits but that didn't really help.

I've pretty much given up on them now. I was planning to buy some R4's but now that they've increased the minimum order to 100 I'm tempted to abandon them completely and wait for the knock offs to appear. I'm very disappointed in both the quality of the cartos and the decisions being made by the company. I don't feel comfortable giving them any more money - at least not yet.

Edit: I've just ordered some of the Joye branded 510 cartos - will see how they go instead.

Cheers
Sanda

Without PTB I think you're in for an uphill fight. My best suggestion is to get a variable mod of some kind and "dial down" the voltage. Not the cheapest solution but it works.

I wonder if Walmart will deliver a box of Pyramids to Oz :) Do they even have an online store. Must check.

Anyone know of a eCig supplier who sells ptb. About 1 square yard should do it.

You have to make sure they work before you take them out of the box mwa!! lol

Pull up the wick and cut about 1 1/2 inch off of the loop...then I use a needle with the hole end ground down halfway to make it a U shape..push it down in the center of the length of wick..and tuck the extra wick in around and over the coil with the ends going out the slots. It slows the airflow down more like an analog and keeps the coil soaked. I'll do a pic when I get back...gotta go get the kids now.

Hey just wondering If u had gotten those pics yet.. As I prob will have to mod my new r4's when I receive them bc I ordered the 2.6 ohms on a riva....

Check this out arjay. You might find something other than PTB that will work like the paint strainer bag found at a home improvement store or something like tule at a fabric store.[/URL]

I will search our town for these tomorrow, but we may be a bit small to stock such items (8500 people). But - a huge thankyou to you chrizzle.

sanda - I hear you. If only the bl--dy things worked out of the box.
I've got some of the Joyes as well and the "dry vape" a bit as well. Nowhere near as bad as the c-E2's though. They don't taste quite as clean as the c-E2 either, but not too bad. Maybe I'll have to slow my vapes down, but I carry 3 or 4 ecigs outside with me so I can swap between them. I wouldn't mind if I could get 5 or 6 quick drags befoe drying up occurred. The only one that works for me is the "new' eGo Cartomizers and they're not practical to carry all the time.

Banjo, I just bought the eGo and 1300mah battery. If I buy any more hardware anytime soon ' She who must be obeyed" would do me an injury - like hide my wallet :)

I've got fifteen of the v3.5 510XL cartos and have an two eGo (650mah) batteries, a 1300mah 510/eGo battery and regular 510 batteries.

I can't get a decent vape from these things. I get 2 drags then burnt taste.

I've been following this thread since the 'dark ages' and I think I've tried most things.

I've tried our ptb here Australia but it's different to yours. Just regular tea bag material.
Blue foam pieces sold here are too tiny, as are the black foam mod. They won't reach much more than 1/3 the way to the bottom of the carto.

I've used the original cup plug right side up and upside down. With a larger hole and as standard.
I've used the middle tapered plug, right side up and upside down. With a larger hole and as standard.
I've used it with only the mouth plug.
I've used it with no plugs at all, and tail-piped it. Burnt my lips on the third drag.
I've used regular untouched wicks. I've cut wicks off at the cup. I've cut the wicks loops. I've tried all the above with variations with these wicks.
I've tried all variations with all my batteries.
I've tried 11 different juices, PG and PG/VG mix of various ratios. They come from China and the U.S. Also tried local juice with no nicotine. I've also mixed my own.
The first two drags after the ecig has been standing are normally sensational. Then a slight burnt taste. Then a stronger burnt taste. Leave it for 1 minute, still burnt. Leave it for 5 minutes, one or two more decent drags.
Repeat.

What else can I use to make it wick better, considering I don't have access to regular ptb.

I really would like some help, as I'm at a loss as to what to try next.

I got desperate and cleaned my old regular carto's.

Thanks badkolo for the denture tabs idea. I did that, then soaked them in baby bottle sterilizing solution (milton), flushed with water, reversed Taryn spin, then bicycle pump dried.
Put all but one into a container with rice. Filled up that one. It taste pretty flat after the e2's, but at least I can take 10 or 12 quick drags if I want.

My mum (83) has been visiting and watched me do all this today. Plus the filling with the hypodermic needle. She wasn't too impressed I think ;) Said it seemed like a lot of trouble to go through and I explained that it shouldn't be this difficult, just having teething problems. She said the amount of time I'd wasted playing around with these today I probably should take them to the Dentist. Nice one Mum.

:(

Hello Arjay!

The first box of 3.5s had 2 defective ones right out of the gate. No matter what I did they were burning. I opened the 2nd one up and the wick came right out as it burned off.

I then sat back for about a week and decided to try what I had left. The next 2 were fine. I did decide to do the PTB mod to the 2nd one, and I've been vaping with it for about a week and it's great. :)

I have one more left in that box, and I guess I'll find out at some point if it's good or not.

The quality control of these potentially blissful babies is atrocious. I just ordered a box of the rev4 and I am hoping that it is my long lost unicorn.

Have a lovely evening your time! :)

I'm an Aussie too, though I live in the states and when I read about the PTB I was thinking...but it's just a regular teabag! So I went and bought a pack anyways out of curiousity and yeah, completely different material to what we have back home. I'm not sure how you could get around that other than go to that thread and order some materials online. PTB keeps my carts from burning at all, love it, just wish I could get an E2 to work out the box!

Banjo, I bought one of the blemished Buzz's from NotCig. I'm sorry I sold the LS and BB! But I found myself going back to my Chuck 90% of the time :( Just hate that box feeling!

Ok...I just used some wick I had from another carto but if you need wick just cut some off the loop. I did this on an open carto so you can see it better. You can lay a piece across the coil like I did here or tuck two pieces down into the cup one each side of the coil and bring the ends out the slot. So this is the wick laying on top the coil...

And this is with the fill ring on...which holds the wick against the coil...
P1020238.jpg

Also...I cut the slots in the fill ring larger too as shown..
P1020236.jpg

Basically just put more wick surface at the coil.

ALSO.....BR....

I didnt get a chance to mold one of these yet so I punched one out of silicone I had but you can get the idea. Its hard to see but I tapered this mouthpiece to where it could be used to center and seal the cup without the fill ring..or it still has enough flat on the end to use with the fill ring and still seal the two holes. Without the ring you could pull the mouthpiece out and drip on the sides to fill.

Thank you nicotime very descriptive... And u have used this without the ptb and has solved the wicking issues?? I'm assuming u feel that This works better than the ptb.....

Yep it works for me..I have never used PTB for anything...dunno if it works or not. I turn the carto down once in a while to let the juice get close to the cup. Also...people have to remember is the longer the heat is applied to the coil the longer time it takes for the wick to replenish itself. I have always pulsed the button and do short burst so the juice stays close to the coil..and doesnt carbonize it...but some like to dry burn so I dunno...up to the user.

Oh yeah...guys...look close at my first pic...at the connector you can see a pale greenish ring inside...it looks almost like copper patina. I am wondering if this might be from solder flux from when they attach the wire to the connector...in fact I am betting it is as it scrapes off like a waxy substance. I really hope they are using lead free stuff over there...we need to get a lead test kit!!

I wonder what the warranty is for these kinds of problems

lol, good one v1john.

The whole idea of these was "more antiseptic, like you wanted". I'm sure they wouldn't manufacture with anything with lead or arsenic in it...

Can we declare this revision perfect and move on to the next one? (anxiously awating r11 :))

I easily get the idea nic, and fully understand the taper. Mine have a taper too, but it is more gradual and goes in further.

My original intention was to drip down the side, but for me a syringe is quicker and easier. I don't have a phobia about using a syringe because I found out way back there that they were the best way to fill one of the old type cartomizers.

I know you do...I just wanted to play with my camera!lol

I use a syringe for everything also. I would make a bunch of tips up but R5 may be something completely different...toaster wire around a toilet paper ball on the end of a toothpick maybe..who knows!:?:

I wish my old camera would take a close up.

Yeah, I've been wanting to revise my filler tips, but don't know if they would work for the next revision.

Just got my r4 from bad hooked up to my vgo, WOOHAA it works well, and I like whatever it was prefilled with, not bad for Dekane liquid. Now to use it all day and see how it fairs.

Bad you are a true gentleman. Thanks a million.

only 1 should be prefilled, i threw that in last second when i realized it was in one of my vgo kits, its ry4 on a r4
