While we are sort of on the subject of misrepresentation, has anyone here thought about the blatant lie that is cigarettes? A cigarette by definition is "A thin cylinder of finely cut tobacco rolled in paper for smoking." (emphasis my own)

Rumours has it that FDA will next take it with the fake cigarettes and fake tobacco, and will deem that any product containing less than 90% finely cut tobacco rolled in paper cannot use the name "cigarette". And products containing less than 50% tobacco cannot be called tobacco products. After which they will perpetually pay fines to themselves once deeming e cigarettes as a tobacco product.

There are many products out there that don't contain animal ingredients and aren't labeled vegan, is that shady too?

Do they admit that they leave "Vegan" off the label to confuse the buyer?
If so, yes it's shady.

Bad business decision to mislead the consumer and then admit it in a Fortune Magazine article?

Yeah, I'd say that's a pretty poor decision. At least they admit it.
Now we know for sure we can't trust the label on their product.

I read once that one of the common supermarket wines, think it was Zinser, was produced from organic grapes and was originally planned as an organic wine. But they didn't market it as organic because their research showed that would lose more sales to Neanderthals than they would gain from Hippies.

I don't think there's a law saying you have to label your stuff as organic, vegan, or loathsome capitalist chemical style.

You missed my point.
They intentionally labeled it Mayo (which it isn't even close) and avoided the facts, in order to sell it to people who thought they were buying Mayonnaise .
That's pretty clear cut.
Misleading buyers for profit.

Sorry, I'm not good with that.

If it is to Confuse the buyer, yes.
If the buyer is just stupid, not their fault.

Seriously, confuse the buyer. Is America that illiterate? Read the freakin label before purchasing.

Oh look, Cheeses.........let me close my eyes and grab a few.(pot luck:facepalm:)

I've always kinda thought my mom was at least semi-intelligent... but she wouldn't read a label... if her life depended on it! (which it does, with that diabetes thing). If I tell her that such-and-such food contains thus-and-such, she gives me the deer-in-the-headlights look and says "how do you know that?" Simple, mom: I READ THE LABEL!

Never underestimate the stupidity of the "average" American.

Yeah, I get what you are saying. It doesn't sound like it would taste much like what most people think of as mayonnaise (based on the ingredient list since I've not tried it). If it was called Vegan Mayo buyers would know not to expect it to taste like regular mayonnaise. And according to that article there are other Vegan Mayo products out there. Looking at it that way it is a bit sneaky. Like selling ejuice and neglecting to mention that it was made with some kind of PG substitute. It's about the intent to confuse rather than the actual contents.

My one time mother in law used to make her own mayonnaise for cookouts. That was some fine tasting stuff. Put me off the store bought types. I ended up only using Miracle Whip. I think if you smoke for a long time you need extra strong flavors.

How is it confusing if the jar says dairy free and egg free right on it? And it's not on the back or in fine print. All you gotta do is read the label to see that it's vegan. A consumer that grabs a new product without reading the label and complains about it not being what they thought it was isn't a confused consumer. If you want regular mayo, you probably go for a product you already know. I can't comprehend someone grabbing a product they've never seen before, and not looking at it, unless you just didn't care.

It isn't what is generally recognized as mayonnaise...
It is why Miracle Whip is labeled as dressing and Hellman's Mayonnaise says Real Mayonnaise...

My grandmother for example, can't read the fine print on the tiny FDA required back label.
When it clearly says Mayo in big letters, and it's sold as Mayo, she expects mayo. It's her money.

They intentionally made the labels that way so they could "change mainstream" perception of Mayo.
They intentionally want it to be fuzzy and confusing.
The CEO blatantly admits this in the Fortune article.
Did you read it?

I also gotta say we are all obviously pretty bored on a Sunday to be discussing the finer points of marketing vegan bread spread.

Good thing they don't sell Smakoun in the US.Nobody really knows what's in it, other than it has a lot of protein, no fat, few calories and tastes incredible...
