I burned a pot of chili one time, and no amount of scrubbing/soaking would put a dent in the burned-on crud, until I tried soaking in a baking soda solution for about half an hour. Came right off after that! Wonder if that might be applied to attys, or if the baking soda would clog the minuscule pores.

I've seen others mention the manufacturer's knowledge of this and attempt at similar cleaning cycles, with a frequency based on "?" & unfortunately ineffective.
Also, as others have mentioned, we just took control of this ourselves, starting with blowing out gunk prior to beginning burns.
Again, I'm doing well at 4.5vDC / 800mA - 10sec burns, shot of compressed air in between, until almost no more smoke, once daily.
How long does Pete need to last before a definitive sticky is created for our brethren?

Hi Atoms .well I am not doing quite the same thing as you are but I am certainly being convinced that dry burns is the way to get the best life out of atties. It's the OP who started me on the idea and without doubt its making a big difference for me and my atomizers. It needs more people who are always having trouble with very short atomizer life to be trying it though before we can feel any certainty.
I don't clean them. I will blow them out and store them atty end down to drain. I practice good use. Keep the atomizer moist, even when not using it. When vaping, if the atty gets hot-stop and let it cool. Do not let it get hot . If the taste of the vape starts to taste icky, stop and refill your cartridge. I don't want to jinx myself but I will say I am using the same 2 for over 8 weeks now.
This thread is only really for anyone like me who has already tried your method and pretty much every other suggested method going and have had no luck at all with it.
This dry burn method does seem to be working for me but there is certainly no reason for you to change what you are doing if your atties are lasting so long.
Wahhhhhhhoooo........Four weeks today and my atomizer is still working!!!!! Four whole weeks with just one atomizer vaping 3 to 4 ml of juice per day. After using 25 atomizers in my first four months of vaping trying out every other idea suggested to make them last longer and now I have finally had an atty last for four weeks using a variation of the OP 's suggestion. My dream had been just to have one that lasted for 2 weeks but FOUR is brilliant.
Pete, what exactly is the process you are using, what is the variation? And what kind of atomizer?
Where did you get your atomizers? I'm starting to think that matters...
31 days today and my atomizer is still working without any loss of performance.
My gal and i have only managed to kill one atomizer since we started in the begining of march. She uses a kiss box exclusively and i use 801/901/mods. Im not sure what contributes to atomizer failure but i used to take a ton of preventative cause with cleaning and mantaining my atoms. For the last month and a half ive done nothing to them really. I do cycle through them but that is more of a flavor issue than trying to use them equally. I generally stick to my atomizer that has 555 in it.
The atom i managed to kill was only really half mistake. Ive been using mods with 2 3.7v batteries, and i was trying to power hit the hell out of the poor thing when it died.
So far as cleaning goes i dont do anything other than rinse them with hot water on occassion. I used to do the coke bath but foud that it seems to work really good on the paint, leaving me with mixed matched atom/bat combos.
Just a side note, the two of us burn through about 7 ml of liquid a day.

Hi Steve...I missed those pictures ...what thread was that in?.....5 weeks now and this coil is still working perfectly. I hope this doesn't just happen to be a really lucky atty. If I get the same results with my next one then I think I will be certain that this dry burn method of keeping them clean is the one for me.
Yep, establishing a track record with more than one atty will be the true test for the dry burn method. In the past I went almost a month with a couple of attys that only had a nightly drain and a weekly rinse. Although their peak performance was starting to decline, they were finally killed off when the power came on accidently and fried them.
Since then I have had a series of short lived attys. I finally started doing a modified cola method of maintenance and my present test subject is approaching it's one month anniversary with no noticeable drop in performance.

The supply used for this was a nominal 4.8v but NiMH, but by my reckoning is actually less powerful than a fully charged 3.7v lithium - especially the larger capacity lithiums used in mods.
However, I can run my 901 atty for long periods at red hot and hotter. So unless the atty has more than a slight deposit, heating in place seems to be pretty safe, but best done with batteries that have faded a bit and not a passthrough if one wants to be safest.
So running ones new atty redhot for 10 seconds at the end of every day as preventative cleaning looks very good to me. Of course, no guarantees. And a weekly wash out and rinse for non-hardened residues elsewhere than the coil.

Is it my imagination, or what? Every time I blow out my atty and leave it propped up, open end down, overnight, it seems never to work again. What am I doing wrong?

hmmm thats strange... Are they cold lucky or still get warm just no vapor?.... Sometimes when you blow it out it needs lots of priming and vaping to get it restarted..

..... alas my RN 4072 has finally died but it has lasted for an amazing 41 days !!!! 
vaping at least 3 ml of juice per day.I dry burned it once a day, only heating the coil up until I could see it glowing nicely red. It working perfectly for the whole 41 days with no loss of performance at all until the coil wire actually broke. I am not sure if it will be visible in the picture but upon inspection it 'was' the wire that broke, it did not come away at the soldered connection.
The Atty I am using now is an 801 and I will continue to dry burn once a day for this one.
