This is the Szechuan peppercorn, which is actually prickly ash.

I’ve experienced being “spice drunk” from Indian food. Um, this stuff had a similar effect on me. :)

Looks like the stuff that falls off my crepe myrtle trees in late fall.

Lori, I have some Prickly Ash (a/k/a Hercules Club) trees on my property. They are just completely evil trees. Do a search for Prickly Ash or Hercules Club images and check out the thorny trunks and branches on them.

It is yet another of nature's creations upon which I have declared war. But I had no idea that the seed pods were used for cooking. I've heard that the tree bark and leaves have been used to numb the mouth as a treatment for toothaches.

I read about that! I didn’t see the thorn images until I looked again just now. First thing I did at the house in PA was to dig up several “decorative” bushes in the landscaping along the front sidewalk. Long, thin, needle-like thorns. I thought, “Who does that?!?” The leaves were pretty, variegated pink and light green. But I had to wear thick gloves AND wrap it in newspaper to carry it to the burn pile.

The flowers of prickly ash are supposed to be good for inflammation, digestion, and circulation - among other things. When used in cooking, they give an overall sense of well-being. :)

I had a young Herules Club here, but it died during a vicious drought. This was before it was established. I got it for the numbing effects. Another two that come to mind are Firethorn and Mayhaw. Both have vicious thorns on them. I also used to have a succulent type shrub, with vicious thorns too. You couldn't weed around it very good, and you had to be so careful with those thorns. Some may be coming up now, I don't know. I need to look. If you want to keep trespassers out of an area, that'll do it! You poke yourself with one of them, and you probably won't forget it. Mesquite tree thorns won't break down, as I'm sure Pappy knows. It makes great wood for the great smoke taste of bbq though. I know someone who tried to burn down mesquite trees. He said you can't have any horses in the area where those trees are. We don't have Mesquite trees where I live though, thankfully.

I don't have Mesquite trees but I do have Honey Locust trees down in my woods and pasture, and I'm working on a plan to get rid of them. They are just as bad as Mesquites. I'll take a pic or two of some of the thorns, which have needle sharp tips and can grow to be several inches long.

The thorns won’t break down - as in, they won’t burn? That’s kinda creepy!

Whatever the bush was on my property, the thorns really burned when you got stuck by them. Seemed like they had some kind of irritant on them.

I have a one inch scar on my forearm from a weed on my property that had thorns. Happened a few months before I moved away. It was a nasty, deep scratch. Then it became infected. I cleared it up with hydrogen peroxide, but it left its mark. Something to remember PA by.

Today’s Biang Biang Noodles turned out even better than yesterday’s!

Fun fact: the Chinese character for the name of this dish is the most complex in the language. There are over 50 strokes to create it. The name refers to the sound when you slap the noodles on the counter as you stretch them.

There were some trees in California that had the most beautiful detailed orchid type of flowers.
But dang ! The tree had some wicked thorns growing all over it.
And it would get these huge pods.
All my years there, I never took the time to find out what it is. :(

Google
Similar to a Silk Floss tree...maybe that's it

I think it’s my favorite food prep challenge so far! It’s a really inexpensive meal too. I bought the spices and baby bok choy at a nearby Chinese market called 99 Ranch. Super cheap!

Here’s a video that shows the noodle prep. I used a recipe from a different video for the sauce and the oil infused with the prickly ash. But this one is more clear for how the noodles are made.

Anyone interested, I’ll share the recipe. You can make it as spicy, or not, as you like. :)

sounds like the Bougainvilla ( sp?) 1-3" long spines capable of inflicting a nasty stab that burns like tabasco juice... ( got one in my backyard and I keep a fair distance from it)

Looks like the ones I had were barberry bushes. Pretty, but deadly. Maybe there were microbes on the thorns that caused the burning sensation for me. I don’t see any info that their thorns burn.
