Good Morning Army. Easing into coffee before 8 am Doctor's Office ...
Been looking up computer stuff. At least I understand what "Google" is.
Linux is not a device. I need a device. Actual physical property.
AS operating systems (Software ?) goes, Linux and MacOS are nearly identical (?)
Windoze is the most common, and generally well liked. But it takes 500,000 of memory just to operate, and keeps adding to that due to malware, hacks, and other "Updates". Found on many Brands of PC including Dell.
Apple Users are "the Provarinati" of the PC world. They should be, considering what it costs. And they try very hard to stay in their own little corner of the world, example- Thunderbolt 2. But the basic operating code (platform ?) is simplified. Actually quite puny compared to Windows. It takes up far less space and less susceptible to the malicious things out there in cyberspace.
I don't trust Google, even though I am using it now. I always get the feeling I am being watched by snot-faced college kids who aren't even old enough to shave, but are getting paid to spy on average citizens. Welcome to the misinformation age. Imagine someone who never outgrew "Gerber's". That's who is watching you right now. (No, I am not into tin foil hats).
And I am supposed to go dump $1000 or more for this ?
    Old Man Rant over ...

Have a Safe and Blessed Day :)
Linux and MacOS share a common origin , they are both Unix Based . They're both similar in operation . You won't have any problem using either one , They're both intuitive and easy to navigate . The difference is most Linux OS's are not corporate based and are free to use . MacOS is tied to Apple and their hardware and pretty much won't run on other PC's while Linux will run on most computers like your Dell . I posted a link for a Dell laptop with Linux Mint on it . You'll get more for your money going that route vs the Apple . You're less likely to be spied on using Linux IMO but there's a little bit more of a learning curve as well . Either one is a much more secure choice over a Windoze computer though . You can't go wrong either way Mac or Linux .

Another up vote for TigerDirect and the NewEgg.

+1 on Newegg.com! Between them and TigerDirect.com, I was able to equip my little startup business on a shoestring budget back in the 90’s. It could have been an even shorter shoestring, but I had geek shinyitis something awful. I poured over there catalogues (remember those?!?) and wanted all that I saw.

Excerpt joysticks. And the controllers made to mimic airplane flight controls for playing Flight Simulator. Those had no appeal for me. ;)

    Good morning Army!

Looks like a new addition to the family will be in the world soon. Rick's daughter is at the hospital and her water has broken (been a slow leaking for a few hours). Waiting to hear something and Rick will be flying out probably tonight. I'm going to follow with our car and taking my daughter and youngest grandchild. This way he only has to pay for 1 ticket and when we meet up, we can get rid of the rental car he will need for a day.

Spend a few days there and drive back Saturday.

    Excited!!!

Robin, this is exciting. Keep us updated!

I have used Newegg in the past 2-3 times. It was a very good experience.

Papaw, congrats on the new computers. I have had several over the years. I always do a lot of searching before I pick THE ONE I can afford, that has what I need. It takes a long time for me to make my mind up. I stopped doing computer games a very long time ago. Since it is just me, I basically need one with a good amount of storage, and your basics. I like surfing on the net mostly. I am set in my ways though, and learning a new system seems daunting to me. At one time computers were a major hobby for me. Now I don't go searching for new things to do with them. I used to download all kinds of free software mostly. Now I limit that due to so many issues these days. I am no computer geek at all. I have changed out a hard drive, and put in a new memory card. But I found that stressful, especially with a small tower. I only like desktops. I used to have a laptop, but they don't last. I got a Win7 laptop years ago, and it didn't last 3 years before the jack pot went to pot, and the screws started falling out. I went back to desktops after that.

She cursed at me and told me to take it back ....

I kinda thought that might happen! I had a similar experience with J. But I didn’t take it back. And now it’s indispensibile and still running strong. Hmmmm, go figure. ;)

Can’t wait to see what you end up doing.

My last desktop lasted 1-1/2 years before the hard drive crapped out. Meanwhile, I've had this laptop for five years now and it gets used far more than the desktop ever did. Still going strong. I think it has less to do with desktop vs laptop and has more to do with luck of the draw. Or more specifically, the quality of the components.

You were lucky then, on the new one. I bought new screws for my old laptop, and they didn't stay in. I took it to a shop to get them to put in a new jack, and find out why the screws wouldn't hold. I think he said I needed a new panel for it. The price was half the price to get a new computer. I said to heck with that. The guy told me the cheaper laptops back then last 2-3 years on average. If you get what I considered a high dollar one, it may last a good deal longer. The laptop was a Gateway. I'd never had a Gateway before. I've never had one since. Oh, I forgot I did get a Toshiba laptop first, but I couldn't even use it. It was delivered to my house and had an issue from the get go. They made me jump through a bunch of hoops, and waste my time trying to get it working. So I sent it back to them. It was a long drawn out nightmare, that I won't get into. I said never again, and I haven't even looked at that brand again. I've had two HP computers. I've had two Dell computers. The first one I had a guy build for me, and that was by far my most expensive computer. After that the price dropped for a computer that fit my needs by half. Of all the companies I've tried, I liked Dell the best.

Luck...yep, that's got to be it. You know the saying..."I'd rather be lucky than good". :)

Laptops are mobile. That means they get tossed in attaches', back seats, trunks, drawers. They get started, shut down, restarted, over and over, etc. They see lots of abuse. Desktops are taken out of their box, put on a desk, and live out their lives in the same spot where it started. Comparing the durability of a laptop versus a desktop is like comparing the durability of a WW2 statue versus a G.I. Joe doll. :)

TADA!!!! That was fast. I’m impressed with you both. It was gentlemanly of you to set hers up first. I’m sure it’s also a learned response to a repeating scenario. Get the lovely lady settled down and settled in and then you can get on with your own plans.

That's a win-win for Mamaw. She gets a new computer and got to yell at you too. :)

    Life is good. ;)

Generally quite true. Unless it’s my beast of an HP workstation which has been hauled cross country and then back and forth from Vegas to LA through Death Valley. And it’s still going strong. [knocking on wood and throwing salt over shoulder]

I bought it in 2010 or 2011. It’s seen a couple of hard drive failures. But it’s designed to be worked on easily. Drives have a release clip, pop out, slide in another, clip and done. The drives that failed had been brought over from the workstation I was replacing. I usually run three hard drives on it.
