Well I went with AT&T years ago because they were the only one that I could get a cell phone through. They had the go phone plan. The others (Version, Sprint) wanted $1000 deposit before they would sign me up. Which was their way of saying your credit isn't good enough and we don't want your business. I've been with AT&T ever since and have no problems with them. But when you think about it they all have their problems. If you look online you can find the same complaints about any company. Life's to short to let that kind of thing bother me. I forget it and move on.

We had cable tv through them . The tech that installed it ran the cable under a door despite me telling him to drill through the wall . The door eventually swelled with humidity and cut the cable . The repair tech said it was my fault for not being more insistent and wanted to charge $300 to run a new line . I told him to get the F outta my house and canceled the service . The SOB's tried to charge me for the time period the service was down as well . A rep called to see what the problem was and said " Oh the tech musta had a bad day " I left his ears burning after that remark as in why the F is it my problem what kinda day he had . I'd say I got my reasons to not like the SOB's .

Does anyone know what dns is assigned when the setting is on automatic in my laptop? I’m assuming it assigns my isp but then I’m curious who my router assigns (which is also on automatic). And if the router rules then it doesnt matter what windows assigns to my laptop. I’m guessing my isp also assigns my router because its their signal. Did that make sense or did y’all give up on this conversation long ago like I would of?

Sorry to “disagree” with retic, and i’m on my cell and i am a lazy typer on cells, but no, it’s not the isp that assigns the dns when set to automatic (on a device _behind_ a router. No way for a isp to assign something at this level)
We all (most of us, connecting thru a router) get our _internal_ ip and dns ( and the ip of “our” router) from our router via a protocol called dhcp. If you set your router’s dhcp settings to distribute cloudflare or whatever as dns via dhcp the devices in your network will use this dns when set to auto. You can always override what dhcp offers you by disabling automatic and setting a dns ip for each individual device on your network. Of course devices (like roku once did, or still is, idk) where you cant set your dns at all might use something else - not what your router offers thru dhcp

If you dont change your router‘s setting then whatever dns your isp assigns to your router will either be forwarded to your devices when on auto, or, in most cases, the router will advertise itself as a dns and will simply relay every dns request it hasn‘t resolved before to your isp‘s dns. (Which should be the fastest version, because your router is in your home, ie almost no latmcy, and the isp‘s dns as upstream should be fastest compared to other dns servers outside your isp‘s network)
So essentially most routers have two „dns settings“ - the one they use themselves, usually in the connection/ip settings and one in the dhcp settings which is the one they offer to the clients in your network (if these devices use it or something else is a different story)

That being said - dns merely resolves the site or service you want to use to an ip address. This address is unique and every dns will give you the same address (unless manipulated). The actual connection to this address is always done by your isp unless you use a proxy or vpn (in which case the connection to the proxy is handles thru your isp, and the connection to your destination is handled thru the proxy/vpn). I.e. it just resolves something like „woita.de“ to something like 88.198.119.21. that‘s the way the internet operates. Your client will ask your router to connect to that numerical address, then the router will ask your isp (as the closest peer), then it will determine what network to ask to connect to that address, then that network will determine ...... until you reach my server, and then it goes all the way back. (and forth)
So dns was simply invented because typing 88.198... is less convenient (and memorable) than woita.de

Well, for a cell-typed post that was long.

Sorry for me wise-...-ing. Might be the florida heat or the beers or bourbons i had.
So, yes, we made it, but entering the us in charlotte was no fun this time
Immigration guy accused us of abusing our greencards because we dared to vacation and planned on heading to germany after a week. (Until january when we plan on coming for good) Long story. Went to customs today and we should be alright. We'll see the next time we come to the us. So, sorry bronze, but not on good terms with nc atm. Guy was indian with a worse accent than me, so who knows what he did to get his greencard :/

Rant and wiseassing over. Good night army :)

The word set may have been a poor choice but the outcome remains the same , the use of automatic settings will result in the ISP's assigning a DNS . Not something I care to let them do in any event so I have changed mine across the board . BTW , your post wasn't a rant , ya need to expound on the dumbazz Immigration official for at least another paragraph . My post on AT&T is shorter than my usual so it isn't up to my standards for ranting . Pappy's post on AT&T was more a declaration of intent . :)

Today sucked . My 70" tv bit the dust , went out in the rain to Bestbuy and picked up a 55" 4k for $429 , largest I could wrangle by myself and it took some doing to get the old tv down and out , my back is paying for it now . After I got the tv squared away I went to pick up some food and on my return there's four police cars parked in front of my house , instant panic attack . Turns out a nutcase friend of my wife's that she's been avoiding called the police to report my wife as a missing person . God help her if I ever run in to her . It won't be pleasant .

Morning friends! Woke up today thinking it was Saturday. I’m gonna go ahead and call it that. Maybe spend the day like it is Saturday. Not really. There’s Work work to be done. I probably need more coffee. :)

Thank you @woita for that enlightening explanation! Impressive summary of how it all works. I knew all of that at one time but for me the info slips right out of my brain the moment I’m done using it. I’m really sorry about your experience with immigration. Everyone has such a hair-trigger and the flames of division have been fanned to inferno level on certain topics.

@retic1959 - This level of insanity is all too familiar. I’ve known someone who would do such a thing. Horrible!

thats about right.... give some mind altering drugs to the teens... as if they arent messed up enuf with the hormone overloads... o_O

It’s not just the mind-altering part either. Each new pharma drug seems to get more toxic. Poisonous “cures”.

That said, my pages are still snapping in and out very nicely since assigning DNS.WATCH in my router.

    Good morning. :)

It's been faster than Cloudflare on average for me , maybe less traffic on their servers ?
Truthfully I am not noticing any difference in speed vs what I had previously (auto). My pages have always been pretty snappy. Maybe cuz I’m over 100mbps on my internet. But I do like that it is more incognito.

I'm supposed to have that kinda speed but I don't always get it . Cox cable is unreliable as an ISP .

I think that is the norm for cable/isp companies. It’s one reason why that industry has a bad rep. I’ve been lucky with Time Warner (now Spectrum). Service and reliability has been pretty good I must say. But I still hate the lack of competition.
