Hi Robin! Do I dare go back and read what that comment was about?! :)
Used furniture. Repurposing old furniture and how we really don't want to repurpose soft furniture as the cushioning may contain not so nice things ;)

Ahh yes, I would have to agree with what the general said in that case. Rip out the cushioning and have it re-done if it's got good bones. Most furniture made these days is disposable, but there's some quality old stuff out there.

It's kind of like when you move into a new house and wonder about the carpeting. I replace it all. Especially if they had kids and pets. In fact, I sanitize the entire house before I move the stuff in. If anyone pees on my carpet it's gonna be me.

My TV died. It's a 10 year old Samsung DLP. The color wheel blew up. I replaced it once before. Not gonna do it again. Needs a new lamp too. By the time I pay for all that I'm more than half way to a new LED. And putting a color wheel in is a PITA. Gotta shim it perfectly. Just aint worth it. So got a new one on order. I actually ordered it before the TV died cuz I knew it was going. Should be here Friday. Good time of the year to buy TVs. They've got the overstocked 2015 models marked way down...while supplies last of course.

I'm running a 2006 50" DLP too. One lamp around 4 years ago. Cost me $200. I'm weighing options for when the next one dies. If it's still $200, I may get another. Have no clue if anything else goes.. Whatcha get?!

DLPs generally speaking are very durable. Very few things can go wrong with them. Yes, the lamp needs to be changed every few years but beyond that they don't have much that goes wrong with them. That said, mine was unusual in that the color wheel went bad. I fixed it and now the wheel went bad again. One option you have with the lamp is you can buy just the bulb and not the entire lamp housing. It saves you some bucks. Still might be worth it for you to go that route Dust. But 50" LEDs are pretty affordable these days too. I tend to be a cheap bastich and would opt to go with a bulb exchange if it can be got for $100 or less (which I think you can on Amazon). Or I might replace it with a new LED and use the DLP in another room. I ended up with a 43" Samsung LED. I didn't get a smart TV. Don't need it. However, it is getting to the point where all TVs will be smart capable. I have a cubby hole above my fireplace and a 43" set is as big as I can fit in there. Truthfully, it is plenty big enough. Overall, Samsung remains a pretty good brand. Not as cheap as some but I think you get the quality with a Samsung that is worth the extra $$.

I just saw my receipt for my 42" Samsung DLP. I bought it in November of 2005. It cost me $1,800.

And now a 43" Samsung LED costs $370.

Which confirms my point that with any product or service the prices always comes down dramatically and (generally) quality always goes up. We should be doing the same thing with healthcare and the way to do it is to ban health insurance and let people pay for and shop for their own healthcare. Nothing improves products and services better than good old fashioned competitive capitalism when people shop around for their own stuff instead of letting a third party pay for it (that we really pay for in the end). Ex: Lasiks, cosmetic, and veterinarian. All very affordable, none insurable. And thank God there are rich people who can afford the high prices of new products and services such that manufacturers/providers can make it worth their R & D expenses to undertake new innovations. Then when economies of scale sets in middle class slugs like us can easily afford it.

Off my soap box. But I know the General (who was a great businessman in his own right) would agree. That's why he risked getting hisass shot off.

55 inch Sony here. neena neena neena....70 inch next time.......This is obviously making up for my childhood where we had no car, you walked to the telephone box next to the post office, took a bus to town, and the TV was black and white - when it wasn't frying the occasional fly that got in from outside....

Always!.....don't buy Bronze's furniture.

I was thinking rattan or wood furniture where you could make the cushions or buy new.

Well, I missed saying hi to @Dusty_D again! Dang.

Went to a spin class today. What a workout! But a good step toward getting back into cycling. Scarfed down a burrito after. There went the calories I managed to burn.

@Bronze - 4 kids, 2 dogs and 2 cats. Yep, I really hope the new owners of my house can replace the carpet soon. We cleaned the heck out of it several times in a row, but still.

My childhood TV took up half the room! One of those radio, turntable, TV, massive wood furniture pieces. Current TV is maybe 32" basic LED. Don't watch much anymore. :)

Good Morning Army. Bronze talking TV's like it's a high performance car. As long as there is a Wal Mart Supercenter within ten miles, who cares ? Just grab a 55" Visio and mount it on the wall. Add a sound bar w/ subwoofer and turn it up loud enough to aggravate the wife.
When I got out of the military, I bought a second hand color console that lasted about ten years before it got fried in a lightning storm (before there were overload strips). Then I bough a second color console that I had for maybe ten more years. These junkers nowadays might last five years, if you are lucky. "New and Improved", yea, right...

Have a Safe and Blessed Day :)

Good morning! these 10 year numbers being thrown around are a little scary, because 10 years is where I'm at with mine. Mind you, I've still not made up the sticker price of the TV I bought in replacement parts. I managed to score it for $1200 back in 2006, when the retail price was close to $2400 for the 50" HDTV model. I'm still sitting at well under $1500, so maybe I'll throw another lamp in there and get a 65 or 70" LED for the basement.

Hi @LAwaters!! :)
