Papaw, sorry about your computer. That company is on my **** list. I am sick of them. I just haven't had the nerve yet, to go to Linux. But I feel sure I will be in the near future. I just don't want to be without a computer if I mess it up.
The FDA is also on my **** list. These folks saying that it is just a way to entice kids is bogus. I like flavors. I am well over 50 years old. I quit smoking, and was able to stay off of cigarettes thanks to vaping. They can poo poo that all they want to. The people here know the truth. They are safter than cigarettes, and this is done for the benefit of big T and big P. They can say it isn't all day long. Look who stands to gain. It isn't the little people, that's for dang sure.
I can help you with that KK , the Linux DVD if it's burnt correctly is a Live DVD meaning you can run Linux off the DVD without installing it , try before you buy except it's free . :)

Yes, the red x will set you up on a scheduled update to Win10. They knew that people would fall for it. That is exactly why they did it.
I consider my computer to be my property , Microsoft thinks otherwise , screw'em !

Very cool! I had to setup a VM for Win on my MacBook Air when I was traveling. Basically, I was able to duplicate my Win workstation on an external drive so I could deal with work emergencies.

But the Adobe Creative Suite software I use everyday is a bunch of powerful but resource hogging programs! The VM was soooooo slow running those. You'll hate this part -> I rent that software thanks to Adobe's decision to only make it available by subscription. Over $50/mo. If I stop paying, I keep my files, but have no program to open them! Grrrrr. Cost of doing business. Necessary evil. Beats paying almost $2k at once to upgrade, as I had to do every year in the past.

I do have a friend who may have a sweet laptop to sell me. Might put Linux on there. Or pick up a Raspberry Pi!

Microsoft is starting to go the subscription route as well , they wanna bleed every penny out of you , bad trend IMO . Since I basically just use mine for online purposes , Linux is a relief and makes perfect sense , wish I had the horsepower to run the KDE version , very cool toy .

Evening..... Loaded the Merlin with Legend last night and vaped it some. Seemed good but I'm sick right not so not a good judge. Anyway I closed the controls and set it aside for today. This morning I find most of the tank leaked out. By the time I got the Fuchai and the tank cleaned up it was time to go to work. So I refilled the Lemo2. I need to inspect the O-rings and rethink my wicking. Right now I can barely taste and vape anything. So until I starting feeling better the Merlin will just have to set here and look pretty.:-x Hopefully by Saturday.:)
Aha! The famous rolling stones! Hope you're feeling better soon David!

Yep, fact is the government doesn't want you to Own Anything. Subscriptions now instead of software, "live streaming" instead of music/movies, leased cars, annual property taxes - or else! - and on it goes.

If ya'll ran Windows XP , Vista or 7 , running Linux Mint xfce or Cinnamon will be like meeting up with an old friend , little to no learning curve , menu button in the bottom left corner of the screen , point and click to run , right click on a menu item brings up the properties box and let's you put a shortcut on the desktop same as Windows . It comes with everything you need , full office suite , Firefox preinstalled , you can run Opera or Chrome , no antivirus , antimalware ,antispyware , root cleaner , or defragging software needed at all . If you wanna play games you can run a full version of Windows 7 , 8 or 10 in a box under Linux .
Yes I'm currently on w7 and am definitely thinking of going linux for sure, in fact the next time I get a spare hour or so, I think I'm gonna do it. Sorry if I'm not computer savy, but what happens to like my pictures and stuff like that? Do I store them first on an external HD ? Or are things stored on the internal hd just stay and have nothing to do with it? will ie remain the same?

CPU = Central Processing Unit, i.e. processor
RAM = Random Access Memory, i.e. Memory

What retic needs to know: What processor is inside your PC and how much memory have you got.
He's looking for something like Intel Celeron <somelettersandnumbers> or Intel Core i<somelettersandnumbers> or
AMD Athlon <something> (or something completely different ;) ) for CPU and something like "2GB" or "512MB" of memory for RAM :)

If you don't know it might help to tell him what the exact name of your PC is - like "Dell Inspiron 2300".
I'm sure there are tools that you just run and that tell you what you got - but since I'm not a Win guy I'll leave that for someone else to recommend :)

    Good morning army! :)

PS: GB= Gigabyte, MB= Megabyte; sorry, we computer guys love abbrev's :D

It depends what Linux you install and how you install it.
With most installers you can choose whether to keep and simply resize your old, existing Windows partitions in which case no data is erased.
If you choose to wipe your entire hard drive to get rid of Windows entirely the data on your HD will be gone.

Either way, copying everything you care about to an external HD and leave it disconnected whilst installation is the way to go as things can go wrong while resizing.

Retic, I tried running a Linux live off of a usb flash drive. It wasn't doing right for me. But that was months ago. Now I hear you have to be able to disable the secure boot in some of the newer Windows computers. Some computers won't let you disable it. (maybe you could if you were a computer geek) I am not looking at doing this until things settle down around here.

The weather is so bad here in my state. I am praying I don't have to evacuate again. TX, LA, and OK have had enough rain. I am about in panic mode right now. (again) Today I hear next week we have more substantial rain on the way. The movie Waterworld comes to mind.

Woita was dead on in his response to you , backup anything of importance before you install it in either case .

Papaw , again Woita was dead on in his explanation to you , if I direct you or send you the wrong version it could be like putting a lawnmower engine in a Humvee , it would help if You know the brand and model number of your laptop .

KK , getting the right version for your machine is critical , ie if you have an older machine like I do , you need to start with a version that supports your machine .
