Wow, did this thread go to the dogs!

Apostle, I hope you don't think that I think this is "my forum". I gain knowledge from posters here and try to give some back. Been doing so for 13 months. It's Smokey Joe's forum, period. Just as some people have a big mouth ... I have big typing fingers, that's all. Yes, Kate has bigger ones!

Like Trog, I smoked 50 years. I had never even heard of direct inhaling until I encountered the term on this forum. We older Americans learned to smoke from our idols. Please show me one example of Humphrey Bogart, James Dean, Steve McQueen, Marlon Brando, Errol Flynn, Roy Orbison or any other idol of that period who "direct inhaled." Hint: None did. They'd never heard of it either.

I agree to some extent. However, how do you think you would fare had you not been surrounded by others since birth? You would have no language skills for starters. No idea of lighting fires for cooking and warmth, would have to develop your own tools etc etc. Ok its an extreme idea but the principles are the same for more subtle behaviour.

Culture makes a big difference, learning some tasks makes us likely to perform similar tasks in a similar way. It could be that some behaviours seemingly unrelated to smoking make different cultures smoke in different ways.

Tis true that many traits are seen as 'nurture' incorrectly but do not underestimate the power of contributory factors. It is what society is based on after all.

People are forgetting to vote on the first two, whether you direct inhale or mouth puff. We've had 17 voters, but only 9 of us have voted on that. ;)
It only let me cast one vote.

30+ Damn Handsome Man
US, direct inhaler

I never understood why people exhaled smoke out of their noses, what does this accomplish? I prefer to take a quick lung hit and then exhale.

I do this when I mouth inhale.
Pull the smoke into your mouth first, then inhale.
Exhale through your nose while pulling the next round into your mouth.
Repeat until satisfied... nice. :)

Result = no wasted pilot puffs.

a few years ago i watched a respected by me politician Enoch Powell speaking to a bunch of young girl college students..

the subject we sex equality.. Enoch looked at them with a smile on his face and said surely you dont think a few years of modern thinking overcomes a million years of evolution do you..

quite clearly they did.. so do many others..

Enoch was famous for his "Blood on the streets" speech.. a right wing racist bigot some would say... but Enoch was perfectly correct and a very very wise man... his mistake.. he didnt say the right thing at the right time..

its said America now sees britain as its biggest terrorist threat.. we are now Americas number one enemy...

or to be more correct.. 2000 islamic terror suspects are now living in britain as british citizens.. all in all a very interesting situation... should we expect to get bombed and invaded soon.. he he he

Enoch was right... we are what we are and that aint one big chocolate coloured melting pot to quote a song of the seventies..

when times get hard the races colours and religions will clash.. its coming soon to a neighbourhood near you.. movie time news... he he

I may be able to shed some light on this.

I'm a 37 year old American male. I "mouth inhale".

My mother mouth inhaled

My father mouth inhaled

My sister mouth inhales

My grandmother, grandfather and everyone else I've ever known in my entire life, with the exception of a girl I used to know named Julie Fernandez all mouth inhale(d).

I spend a lot (a LOT) of time in bars / clubs as I am a bouncer on weekend nights. Due to this I see a lot of younger American men and women (from 18 years, up) who are smokers and I have never seen any of them "direct inhale".

I actually found it odd seeing leaford doing it.

That being said, it's asinine to say that the way someone smokes a cigarette is "wrong". I've been known to stick one up my nose, light it and smoke it simply for comedic effect. Just because you don't do comedy that way and haven't seen anyone else do comedy that way, is it wrong?

No.

And where's the rule book on smoking? Where's the manual that says "you must take the smoke in to your mouth before you inhale it in to your lungs"?

Please provide a link to a copy before making any more comments about varying modi operandi and their efficacy or correctness.

(p.s.; "chasing the dragon" refers, directly, to a specific method of opiate use (most commonly ......) and not any form of burning / smoking any herbal products. Thanks)

WTF? What the hell are you smoking? Or better yet, WHO says the US sees Britain as their biggest terrorist threat?! That is NOT the case and whomever/whatever you're reading is ... simply wrong!

Wow. Just wow.

I've always used the mouth inhale method. Direct inhaling always gave me a sore throat. But I know some smokers who direct inhale. One guy I went to high school with could pound down an entire analog in under 30 seconds.

One inhale I like to do is what I call the "French Inhale". You bring the smoke into your mouth, then reverse your tongue and push the smoke out while inhaling through your nose. It used to just be a neat trick, but now that I vape, I do it all the time, just to get a great wiff of my vapor.
