If we are going to blame anything or anyone it should be youtube that lets people with "experience" explain how easy it is the mod coils and make super vape machines. How many fingers have been lost to DIY videos made on youtube for any number of technical subjects. I saw a video recently that showed how you can bypass manufacturing specs on a chainsaw to make it cut wood faster! while this might be a known practice to experienced woodsmen that doesn't mean everyone should go tinker with their chainsaw. I hope my point is obvious we either can take the blame for our own actions or pass them off to the true responsible parties. Remember we are only like 10 years out from the last person that claimed crappy rap music turned them into a psychopathic killer.

EDIT: in case my sarcasm isn't obvious enough What I'm really saying is people with no electrical experience shouldn't try the make mods at sub ohm levels nor should they make how to videos online since they aren't qualified to do so.

I can't find the instructions for any of my knives! What will I do?
A person that doesn't know that a knife is dangerous would have to be around 4 years old, or have an IQ of 23 or less.
A person that doesn't know that a battery can be this dangerous might live right next door to you and have an IQ of 140 or more.

Unpopular post alert!!!

Why is everybody saying putting an Atlantis on a mech is stupid? A mech is a great place for an Atlantis. A mech with a hybrid top cap is a terrible place for an Atlantis.

Its very unfortunate what happened to this guy. Why wouldn't we want to feel for the guy? It could happen to any of us at any time. Do all of you finger pointers know exactly how much juice has trickled into the wiring of your ipv, or Sig 150's? Are you all using clear batteries with oh crap meters on the side? Anything can happen. Some of us are better equipped to avoid an accident but nobody is fool proof.

Seems some even want to kick the poor guy for vaping in bed. Seriously? That's my favorite place to vape.....and I agree, the REO is made for bed. Lol

So many extreme personalities on here anymore.

I think this is Something that Many of Us Forget that are on the ECF as Active Members. That we are Saturated by Information about All things e-Cigarettes, Batteries and e-Liquids constantly.

Before I came to the ECF, I didn't really Think much about things like Batteries. Last Night I'm giving an Impromptu Lecture on Ohm's Law and Types of Battery Chemistry.

I don't see much of What goes on Around me, or what I read in the Newbie Section, as Not Being Smart. More just the Vast Majority of people Not being Knowledgeable.

I also do Not think that Retailers as a Whole have done a very good job of Educating people onto Basic Battery Safety.

Lithium batteries should have a "WARNING" or "CAUTION" label.

Both of my cellphone batteries have "Warning" or "Caution" lebels on them, but it seems to be 18x50 batteries don't seem to have any sort of warning labelling

hmmmmm mmmm f; I was going to say, the battery might be easily treated by the consumer like the common Duracell battery, but upon checking a Duracell battery, even that has a "Caution" label about disposal.

Unfortunately, I think you're giving motorcyclists too much credit...there are PLENTY of newbies who DO get talked into the 600 Supersport or go into the showroom already wanting one instead of a reasonable beginner bike. Sad but true.
This may be a VERY good analogy, now that I think about it.

I learned to drive a car when I was 15 years old in a parking lot with my father.
It took me a total of about 5 minutes, and the vast majority of that time was simply getting used to shifting gears.

Driving a car came naturally to me, as if I was born to do it.

But the first time I rode a motorcycle was when we went camping with a bunch of friends.
I got on it and puttered around a bit and thought, okay, I think I got this.

Then I took it out on some trails, gunned it too much at the wrong time and slammed into a berm, smashing my knee up pretty good.
No one told me about the vast difference between driving a car and riding a two-stroke dirt bike.

Yes, there are! I'm the exception in that I research the heck out of everything. A lot of people are too lazy...how many posts do I see a day, "Where can I get a ____". I feel like posting "Try google!"

And yes, what we want isn't necessarily what we should have. We learn that more as we get older.

Some people won't read to save their lives. Some are just clueless...its just an e cig...riding a bike is no different than driving a car. Some don't want others raining on their parade when they've been warned.

Nic`d Up in Oklahoma!
With the current "explosion" (pun intended) in popularity of sub ohm tanks (no less than 9 popular tanks released in the last 4 months), sadly we're likely to see many more of these types of unfortunate events.

The LA Times link below has a video clip from Channel 2 news stating he recently purchased the e-cig at a Smoke Shop in Santa Ana (Not a vape shop):

Exploding e-cigarette: Man burned; bed set on fire - LA Times

Eyewitness 7 New Report: E-cigarette lodges into ceiling after exploding in Santa Ana man's hands | abc7.com

Despite some posters theories here that this was a multi batt mech mod, it clearly wasn't! The undamaged batt in the photos is not from the mod as the victim stated he had just changed the battery. The batt is an 18650 batt (possibly MXJO) and the mod a single batt mech mod.

New and inexperienced vapers should not be using a mech mod and sub-ohming IMHO. The Smoke Shop is clearly about to face a lawsuit! Ambulance chasing attorneys all saw this report on the news and probably raced to contact the "victim".

I hope so!

Litigation usually has far better results then legislation.

This video has more info as well as an interview with the guy: 911 Caller Says Electronic Cigarette "Blew Up in My Hand" | NBC Southern California

The video says that "The oils used in e-cigs are FDA regulated, but the electronics are not." Obviously NBC has no clue what they're talking about here.

Then they interviewed some dude who they claimed was an "e-cig expert." He was some public health official from a local college and appeared to have no idea about e-cigs.

This is journalism in 2015.

Sadly the era of Cronkite and reporters getting the story right before it airs are gone!

News is all about getting the story out first, getting the exclusive, they don't give a damn about the facts... its all about ratings and money!

That "expert" was a foreign fool! Laptops have Lithium Ion batts too, and can and do catch fire!

Laptops are not continuously pushing wire coils at sometimes damn near dead-shorted resistances, or pushing buck-boost converters nestled amongst poorly-designed / manufactured electronics either...

I'd have to say it depends on the knowledge level of the user and the specs of the battery used. A mech in the hands of an inexperienced uneducated user is a bomb waiting to go off. Generally speaking a mech is inherently more dangerous than a regulated mod, especially in a newbs hands.

This user looked, acted, and sounded stoned out of his mind, especially for a 29 year old man. If it was only simple mechanical failure, yes I feel for the guy. If it was user error, it is his fault. If the Smoke Shop that sold him the mod and/or batts is selling inferior products, they are partially to blame as is the manufacturer(s). Blame can be placed depending on what the cause was.
