Neither one. It's just harder to thread the ends of the coils into the holes in the posts when the holes are facing the wrong way.
Think of threading a needle when the other, far side of the needle is partially blocked.
And the lifespan of the wick and coil depend heavily on the materials used, the skills and techniques of the person doing it, and how hard its vaped.
I like to use 2mm silica wick (thick bulli) in a single strand with 3-4 loops of kanthal wrapped around it. No need for needles, paperclips, etc., to hold things in place while you wrap the coil. The bulli wick gives out after 3-4 days of hard vaping, and I usually just start with a new coil then. It's a rebuildable where the wicks cost roughly five cents per coil...so I'm not afraid of recoiling just for the heck of it.
Oxidized SS mesh for wick can be resused a few times, and simply recoiled. More effort to ensure it's properly oxidized when it's sitting on the floor of the mod, or else it'll short out and not create any heat. OTOH, it does create a very clean, hot burn that really allows you to taste your juice.
And hildicat, you're probably thinking of a genesis or zenesis mod where partially oxidized SS mesh is formed into t straw that dips down into a juice tank below it. Not a bad setup, but not Reo friendly. It also is exclusively a tanker, you cannot really drip different juice onto the top of it.
