Eh, careful interpreting that short summary blurb. For it to be useful you need to go back and figure out who is a low vs. high risk individual and then the methodology of screening used. Those at high risk (>30 pack/yr smoking history, family history of lung cancer, and whatnot) do benefit from screening in identifying early stage lung cancer when long term survival / "cure" is still possible. It is still not as effective as other types of cancer screening tests for other parts of the body, but that means we need even better testing methods, not stop testing because it's not as statistically useful as say colonoscpy for colon cancer.

However offering tests to low risk people clearly doesn't make sense. Unfortunately most of us around here are not low risk people as many exceed the 30 pack/yr cutoff typically used to justify screening.
I only inhaled about 7 cigars a day, thats not high risk is it?

Actually, many theorize that cigars arent as bad because they dont have all the chemicals that cigs do, but then I dont think they are intended to be inhaled either. There was as much tobacco in one cigar as is in a whole pack of cigs. All I know was until I quit, and started vaping, I was coughing up Ghost Buster sized phlegm every morning. That cleared within a month of vaping.

My feeling has always been that smoke is smoke.

It was a telling signal when they stopped burning leaves on sidewalks, back in the late 60's. Being that it's also the thing that causes the demise of many in fires, I reckon inhaling smoke, in any way, shape, or form, will likely have a negative impact on our states of being.

But I also hear that taste is subjective (or something like that), so I may be wrong. :)

Now, hold my beer while I jump into that awesome leave pile!

Did @Eskie mention "low risk"? ;)

If you jump in the leaf pile while it's on fire, lung cancer screening will be the least of your worries. :D

Cigars are tougher to quantify. It could be 7 little cigarellos or 7 grand coronas. Seven coronas a day for years on end and yeah, welcome to the high risk pool. I know the "but I don't inhale it" thing with cigars but most folks do to some degree.

Yup, you have a free pass into the high risk group.
Far from free, I hate to think how much serious $$ I spent on those things. It was much more expensive than when I had a 2 pack a day habit.

That I believe. Those things are expensive. Especially at 7 a day. You must have been chain smoking those because they usually last a long time.

I think I'm in the high risk pool then (3 pp/d). I really would hate it if I had lung cancer and ignored it, so I have GOT to get that darned X-ray done, I would really hate to miss a diagnosis.

This self-care thing, bah. Like any happy addict I would love to think that I have "solved" all my problems even though I KNOW it is not true.

@mikepetro , you smoke cigars like my husband used to... I think that puts him in the high-risk pool, too, especially since he started smoking at age 8. I think he has a dr appointment soon, I may get him to get his lungs X-rayed if only because "doing my wifely duty" is so much easier than doing it for myself, LOL. I really suck at many things and labwork/routine monitoring is one of them. Hell, I had to argue with my docs who told me I was "eligible" for a mammogram since they moved the age down. I was like, "No history of womanly cancer in my family, I'm allowed to wait, right?" They weren't so happy, but I was like, "Don't think that's mandatory is it?"

One of these days, I will get it right. Labwork is so hard when they tell you you can't have BLACK COFFEE before it, though, I mean that's just cruel....

I am betting most folks in here are part of the "high risk pool." Just a guess....

Sitting down, facing forward.
Stols, get the darn xray! I'm going to the dermatologist for something on the top of my head, in a "more exposed area" (bald spot). I hate going, but I also want to know and, if it's something unfriendly, want it gone like yesteday.

Hehehe, but arent most of these guys dead now?
At some point, all of us are gonna kick the bucket.

For now, I'm happy enough to be rid of the chronically irritated windpipe and the incessant cough I had for the last 15-20 years that I was smoking. Oh, and the fact that I haven't had anything resembling a real cold in the entire 4 years I've been vaping. :)

As I aged into Medicare I was offered the CT lung scan screening for high risk people. I took it and they found a very small nodule which is proving to be benign in followup scans. I fully support high risk groups taking the scan. Something found in it's very early stages is much more likely to be successfully treated and has a better outcome now then in future years. If you have smoked for many years it is very much worth it.

Cigarettes - Yep
Cigars - Yep
Pipe - Yep... (a blend that is currently popular was originally developed for me)

Okay, Okay - I know what group I would be in, but you know I never had phlegm, labored breathing (unless maybe I was climbing stairs), coughing, etc... While yes I did smoke all those things - I also had a fairly active lifestyle, which I believe saved me from those things...
