I know, like me, a lot of us have episodes of CRS, so please remember the guidelines on the front porch from the opening post.

Welcome to the new Older Folks and vaping Front Porch. This thread is a continuation of the original started almost 2 years ago by ˇTxtumbleweed’ and it grew to over 21,000 posts. The mods have kindly asked us to close it and start a new one.

The original thread is still around and you can find it here: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/general-e-smoking-discussion/298835-older-folks-vaping.html

I’d like to dedicate our new porch to Tex. He started the ball rolling and helped so many of us when we first started our vaping journey. He offered us encouragement, shared his knowledge and told us great personal stories ranging from riding the rails as a kid, working as a lineman, lumberjack and fishing the cold waters of the Bering Straits.

Randall, I’m honored to introduce the new Older Folks and Vaping Front Porch at your request. Best wishes my friend and please continue to hang out with us.

The mods have asked us to stay on topic about vaping in this thread. Please adhere to this guideline. Feel invited to join us in the lounge where we can chat about vaping and any other ‘topic of the day’ that meets your fancy.

I thought I would start a thread mostly for older folks but everyone is welcome. It is primarily to help longtime smokers to get off cigarettes and stay off by sharing our vaping experiences. Most everyone reading this has already started vaping so our goal is to support one another and help those beginning the vaping journey.

I have been vaping 2 1/2 years after smoking off and on for 60 years. I inhaled my first cigarette at 10 and by the time I was 15 I was smoking a pack a day. I've struggled with quitting smoking for 30 years and discovering the e-cig and vaping has been a life saver for me. I was diagnosed with COPD about seven years ago and my health was deteriorating rather quickly with loss of breath and coughing continuously. Since I started vaping my health has improved tremendously so that is why I'm so adamant about helping others make the same decision.

I have been vaping for 2 1/2 years but I'm far from an expert on vaping equipment but I have tried most devices or similar ones out there so I do have an opinion on most of them. We are all different when it comes to vaping and one thing doesn't work for all in fact very few of us will settle on using the same juices and PV's. That is what makes having a thread that we can discuss all e-cig related stuff without arguing about what is best is a good thing.

I have found that most of us older folks and long time smokers like the no muss no fuss PV's especially in the beginning. We would like to hear all of your stories and vaping experiences and what devices you started with and your journey to what you use now.

Us older folks do like to socialize along with our vaping but we need to keep this thread mostly about vaping or it will be moved to a social forum. We do have another thread in the Lounge Forum that is both social and vaping related. http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/lounge/520776-older-folks-vaping-back-porch-part-2-a.html

How cute is that!?! I could do that, I crochet and never thought of it.
I made one for my son's eGo's yesterday. That takes 12 tr in the base row, and you would need to tr in every tr for several rows up, because it could slip through the holes. That worked up so quick I could make them for sale, except arthur starts complaining.

It's a shame that people can't discuss politics without resorting to name calling and having their feelings get hurt. In case you didn't notice big bells calls out another but gets shots in about Tea Party Nuts? You are really limiting yourself if you only surround yourself with like minded people. I am an evil conservative and make no apologies about it. Have you been to a vape shop in a college town? I have a gained a lot of lefty liberal friends recently and I am richer man for it. Chill out, have a vape, and let it go.

I got a question for the DIYers: If I vape 50/50 juices, is it logical to order nic in a 50/50 base? I've read through some of the stickies in the DIY forum and read some blogs but I can't really find an answer. Wouldn't I then add additional pg and vg bases in equal amounts to my desired nic level to keep the juice at 50/50?

Good morning my fellow not as fast as we use to be vapers. Kim B when I started doing diy I bought standard flavoring IE: banana, sweetener, graham crackers, apple etc. Then I would try to make my own awesome flavors. I failed miserably I have to say even after 6 months of steeping they finally achieved the class of terrible. I did some searching and found some places actually sell their flavoring pre mixed of flavors that they sell. You only have to get your pg/vg and nic level right which is easy with the e juice calculator. Here is a link to one of those sites. It is a good way to get started into diy. It's also kinda fun and puts a few dollars back in your pocket
Electronic Cigarette flavors, E cigarette flavors, and e flavoring.

Update on Ma-ma's vaping adventure.. It "makes her cough". (mild tobacco and mint, 8 mg.....at least she didn't add body rash, seizures and heart arrhythmias to the list of complaints, as I expected...) but..I'm all like.. "and combusting paper and tobacco hasn't made you cough for the last 50+ years?" Oh Lord j-hee-zus. She will be puffin' a Kent Lite in her coffin, if I know her as well as I think I do. My mom...My prime reason for starting the stinkies, and for quitting. My dad is going to try to keep her vaping as much as she is willing. I guess less ciggies is the new goal here.

You're funny. Seriously though, my neighbor, and I've heard others too, had a slight coughing problem when they started vaping. They just kept a glass of water nearby. (assuming the cough is not from dry hits) Don't know if it's the drying action in the throat or something in the flavoring, but it's good to keep hydrating anyway. It does seem to ease up after awhile. Don't let her use it as an excuse to stop vaping. :thumb:

I would cough if I took a straight lung hit when I first started vaping. That's why I draw into the mouth and then inhale. It helped to prevent the cough. I think most of us had to change our style a bit when we first got off analogs. Fortunately, the cough only lasted a few months for me. I can take straight lung hits now no problem. Tell your mum to stick with it. The cough will go away in a month or two. I believe it was all the cigarette crap in my lungs causing it. Not the ecig. Like taking a steaming shower when you smoked. Always made me cough!!:toast:

I had smokers cough and still had it when I started vaping. It really slowed down after a month or so and even more as I added more vg to my vaping pleasure. I don't search for throat hit like I did 2 years ago. Today I only do 80-100% vg I still get a cough but it has dropped by easily 70%. No shower or cold blast of air cough anymore. ;)

Just curious.... Why do people who rebuild use cotton, yarn, gauze, etc. instead of a piece of silica wick?
Question 2: Which gauge of wire to start with if you're going to learn rebuilding?
My coil of choice at the moment are the Kanger single coil bottom units, 2.5 ohm. I don't use a dripping atomizer, but it's been recommended to me to get an Igo-L to learn on. They're not expensive so will prob order one soon.

I have a Vamo V2 on order from Fast tech but my current setup is two MVP2s with protank mini & Evods, and other assorted clearos. This is working fine for me, but...like so many, I am wanting to expand my knowledge and my "stash" of gear....just in case.

I prefer cotton yarn because a) it's easy to get and inexpensive b) I change flavors often so use micro coils and just replace the cotton. I have found 30g to be my favorite wire guage.

Any KAyfun/Russian experts out there?

I am trying to figure out why all of a sudden this dang thing gives me nothing but dry its for the first half of the tank and is then fine for the last half.

I have not done a darn thing to the build that was working great. It just all of a sudden decided to mess with me.

I don't know if I'm a expert but I never get dry hits on mine. I guess your wick is blocking up juice channel. What set up are you using? I only use 28 or 26 kanthal with a micro coil and organic cotton ball wick. I build my coil to 1.3 to 1.7 ohms on a 5/64 drill bit. I use just enough cotton to get the cotton to the base of my kayfun build block. That is about a inch or so. Then juice it without the chimney on and press it to the build block. It kind of looks like a broom on both sides when I'm done. I would put up pictures but my camera take too high res and the pics sizes are too big for forums. I am tech challenged in this department. Give the kayfun a test fire after you install chamber tube but before chimney stack is on. Rejuice coil with a drop or 2. Reassemble kayfun or russian fill and enjoy.

One last thing is you my be filling it too high. You can't fill them to the top. They both require a little air for negitive pressure to work correctly.

Dang it!! I just put the last of my Caramel Macchiato in my tank!!!! I have more on order but won't have that until Tuesday at the earliest. Guess I'll have to live off of one of the 30 other flavors I have!! :p
As a person that has about 15 different flavors within sight of me as I type this... I feel your pain. Because we both know that NOW that is the flavor you will want the most!

IMO, look for a med. size dripper, about the size of the "L", but with holes in the posts to stick the wire into and tighten the screws down on. MUCH easier than wrapping the wire around the screw at the top of the posts, as on the "L", then when tightening the screws down, the wire always tries to "squirm" out.

Wish I had researched a bit more before I got this "L" and found that out.

As my 16yo daughter would say, "Dad... the "L" is SO yesterday!"

I rebuild kanger coils, I use 32 gauge kanthal, lets me control the ohms with the number of wraps, I use silica wick, works fine for me.

You and I do basically the same build though I use 30 gauge and wrap on a 16 gauge needle

Yeah I think It is overfilling. Case of the video I saw said fill it until juice backwashes out of the fill hole. Guess that is not the plan. LOL
