Guys, from what I gather you boil it to cleanse it of any taste that might be in it. I believe Pete B said he doesn't bother boiling it. It's not to sterilize it, it's to remove any odor that "might" be in it from processing. That's why the use "sterilized, virgin, pure, handy dandy" or whatever types.
Personally I would NOT use whole q-tips. Just rip the cotton off the stick. Boiling the plastic stick might make a real horrid taste and defeat the purpose of boiling in the first place. Just pull the cotton off the tips and place in boiling water. No need to hold them in, it should get saturated after a few minutes. And you can't over boil it. Let it go for 5 - 10 minutes or so. Over "cookin'" ain't possible IMHO.
