Yeah, two ego's is key. You can usually find an ego kit (2 batteries, 2 tanks) for under $30 on ebay. Just make sure you pick black ones. Seems the silver die really quickly.
MFS has Evod blister pack kits for $7.98 each. I have been using some of them for a few months and just ordered 4 more. 2 for me and 2 to get a friend off of cigs. They have the clicker type 650 ma VV battery. 3.5 - 4.1v

My recommendation for any new vaper is iStick / nautilus. You can use a spinner battery but they tend to die on you, at least in my experience, and they have to be recharged all the time.

An iStick with full size Nautilus on top would limit so much of the charging and refilling a new vaper has to fool with instead of these tiny, low capacity tanks and batteries you have to tend to constantly. And it fits in my shirt pocket. Drip tip barely sticks out above the top of the pocket. Stays put, too. Practically velcroed in there with the silicone slip on cover on the iStick.

People can get what they want but the most hassle I've had vaping was when I started with eGos and crappy little tanks that don't hold much juice. The least hassle I've had is with a 30 watt iStick and Aspire Nautilus. I get new atomizers and mods seems like every other week but I still carry that combo with me to work every day. YMMV

Too many buttons and twisty things for many new especially non technical older people. The KISS principle works best for most older folks to start vaping and get off of cigs. Filling a tank and changing a coil and charging a battery should be the most difficult things they have to do. It is still lots more complicated for them than simply buying a cig lighting it , smoking it and throwing it away.

Whatever he finally decides to try - he needs to have a backup. Do not want strong cravings to hit while the thing is charging and do not want them grabbing it off the charger to have a vape... Need to make sure that a lithium battery needs a short (at least) rest period before putting it back to use...

I know what they say but my Ego style batteries often go straight on charge and straight off charge to vaping and 6 months in only one failed because I used the wrong charger on it. Now if I was high powered vaping I think the rest period comes more into play. But for ego or cigalike style tootle puffing no harm no foul.

Well guys life has been crazy. Lots of driving and little sleep. I see they have totally changed the forums while I was gone. This is going to take some getting used to.

Tonight my father in laws struggle with the cancer came to a sad end. I am in that numb state when things go horribly wrong so quickly there is no time to think or react. I am sure that will change in time. So far I am managing. Back on the high nic stuff but no real desire to smoke.

I did want to thank all of you for your support during this nightmare for me and my family. I think I would have lost my mind in the early days without you guys.

I have officially given up on twisted 32g wire. Does anybody want some untwisted on a 100 ft reel?
I use 32 G myself.
I sort of agree, Gary. Although I'd suggest a VV, Spinner or Twist type. The ability to adjust for the flavor and for the normal variances in factory coils can make a big difference.

And if going for that form factor, perhaps a venerable T3S on top?
two spinners.
the non-variable stuff is OK, but being able to adjust will help the transition.

With variable voltage stuff they will be asking why does my "smoke" taste burned?
Higher is better right?

Variable is the second step.

With an eGo, they will be asking "How come it always needs to be charged"? "How come there is hardly any vapor"? "Why did it stop working after two weeks"? "Can I get my money back"?

If I was stuck with eGo style equpment, I'd have never stayed off the smokes. There is much better equipment out there and we shouldn't pretend people aren't intelligent enough to use it.

Not arguing. Just saying.

Gotta run. Y'all have a good day.

When they do that it is time for the second stage.

Well, the ego got me to quit. Was it the ego? Not by a long shot. I hit the right juice right out of the gate.

Thing is, with a cig... you puff. The ego... push n' puff. Anything else... adjust this, try that.

The most important thing is quitting. Not learning a new gadget. (And if the juice isn't right, doesn't matter what mod you have.) The KISS method is the easiest way.

The first "real" mod for me was the SVD. And I read the instructions. Then I read the instructions. Then I turned the instructions upside down and read the instructions. If my first mod was VV or VW... I'm not sure I'd stick with it no matter what it tasted like.

I have a ton of juice on the shelf that are "ok". (not to mention some that suck) But would never have pulled me to quit since I didn't want to in the first place. It has to taste better than smoking or you're going to keep smoking. Or torturing yourself. :)

Greetings everyone in the thread, I need your help and I think this might be the best place to post, so here goes. I will try to keep this as short as possible. :)

My dad, Al, has smoked since he was a teenager, I'm guessing around the same time I started, 16 or so. He's a Vietnam veteran in his mid 60's now and smokes around two packs a day.

It's friggin killing him right before my eyes and I can't stand it. There were a lot of motivating factors that pushed me to quit and he is one of them. Since I've moved back home I realize just how deep the evil clutches of cigarettes goes and it's, well, a huge bummer.

I recently quit smoking after getting a little MVP 2 starter kit and some juice from online and the past 8 days have been a huge success, for me at least.

My pops wants to try it but he's intimidated, both by the technology and (1) having to learn something new as well as the fear of giving up cigarettes.

Compared to a lot of trying times in my life, this past week was a breeze. Sure, the first three days were uncomfortable but I can think of much worse.

So now that I've set all that up and you know what's up, (2) what is a reasonably priced battery and tank that is incredibly easy to use, very durable, and most importantly, satisfying. He smokes menthol camel lights by the way.

I think a box type mod may be a little clunky for him but he said he would give it a shot, I just wanted to hear from you all's experience.

Thank you for any replies, I just want my dad to have some extra time on this glorious massive blue sphere hurtling through space that we call home.

May the stars bless all you beautiful people. :)

(1) First, and absolutely the most important thing, is to make sure that he knows that he doesn't have to quit. Some people can quit easily and quickly, but others take some time to get used to the change. It should be looked at as a process, not necessarily an instant switch. Every cigarette he doesn't smoke is a victory.

And part of the process, as everyone else has said, is finding the (or some) flavor(s) that he really likes, and the right amount of nicotine. I had to go up to 26 mg/ml, others have needed to start at a lower level. This can take some time. And what he smokes may or may not be relevant. Lots of folk prefer sweet or bakery flavors, or fruits, or tobacco, or several different types. I ended up with menthol/tobacco flavor as one of my main choices - but not because it actually tastes like a cigarette, since none of them really do.

(2) An MVP2 or 20w meets all of these requests. Let him try yours, see if it really is too big or clunky. An MVP3 is definitely heavier and longer. A lot of people prefer the box shape. If it is too big/clunky, then a VVv3 (MVP's little brother) or a twist - it should be at least VV, since getting the best flavor and nicotine level can depend on a higher or lower setting. I can't vape over 6 or 7w, others need at least ten. It's easier to push a button or twist a knob than it is to figure out what ohm coil you need by experimentation. You can always help him get it set up, but it's no harder than using a seventies stereo, or driving a modern car.

For a topper there are a lot of choices. The Nautilus or Nautilus mini are popular now, though some of us have trouble filling the mini., and for the BVC coil, much better than the BDC - they do need to be thoroughly primed before using. For rock solid durability the basic BCCs (protanks, Davides, Evods) still can't be beat. Glass is a better choice than polycarbonate since it's really easy to forget and put a tank cracker flavor in a polycarbonate tank (ask me how I learned that.)

Didn't mean to write another of my (in)famous books, but my main points are
  • The switch to vaping can be a process, not necessarily an immediate change - especially if he's unsure about any part of it,
  • Flavor and nicotine level matter most, but VV and VW can be essential to getting there, and it's not that hard to learn to adjust up or down - or to ignore those settings for now,
Oh, and to always have backups for everything!!!
Here's wishing him happy vaping:vapor::vapor:.
