amyc75, I smoked 2 PAD+ for 44 years. Quit when I was 68. Last cigarette was 12/5/2011. Took me 2 months to lay the last cig down. So you do have a learning curve with them. I could smoke inside if I wanted. But it was time to put the cigs down.

2 PAD for 44 yrs and you completely quit within 2 months? You're a trooper Constance!
I smoked 1 PAD for 30 yrs and STILL am working on completely quitting after 5 months.

My wiring must be faulty.

Anyone see njoy Super Bowl ad? Can't decide if I'm happy as I'm sure it's making the fda squeamish and I know it will help vaping become more mainstream or if I should be worried this could come back to hurt vapers. Any thoughts?

NO! How did I miss that? Must have been when I went to the kitchen for some snacks. It upsets me to see these guys make claims that mislead people. They try it, find out it's not what it was claimed and then are turned off completely.

I just stopped in our local convenience store where they were selling njoy. The sign said it was equivalent to 2 packs of cigarettes. If there wasn't a line of people there I would have asked about it. Have no idea how expensive it is and what comes with it. I have run into a few people who said they bought one of "those disposable ones" and hated it. Makes me want to set up a table by the door to give people some real information!!

Thanks, Deb.. I will wander on over!

ETA: Errr... maybe not. "55 and older". I'll be 50 in May.... pffft

Don't worry about the age thing - everyone is welcome and nobody's checking any birth certificates!! I think we talk differently than some of the young'ns and it's just more comfortable for some of us. We're a very varied bunch with tons of experiences that seems to be very helpful to a lot of folks. We all remember what it was like in the beginning so we're more than happy to help. This thread is supposed to be about vaping and not so much chit chat so that's why we spend time at the Older People thread. We talk vaping here too, but you never know what the topic of the day might be and we even have our own DJ. That's pretty special!!

As some may remember, I decided a while back to restrict myself to posting here only, thus leaving my post count at exactly 1000 .. I had various reasons for this, but mainly I was so tired of reading the same old crap thread after thread on posters advancing their own agendas on gov conspiracies, FDA conspiracies, BP, BT .. etc etc etc ..

So, after the first of the year .. New Year and all that .. I decided to put on the big boy shoes and venture out onto other threads .. for one reason, since I'm riding down the road of DIY thanks to some on here I figured rather than keep bugging you guys, I could bug others .. :)

ECF continues to be the epicenter of the conspiracy theory crowd, IMO .. and it's just grown to the point of ridiculesness .. Some of the threads I have read become offensive as it relates to this great Country we share .. to the point bordering on Communism or straight up anarchy .. and the proliferation of twisted / plain bad / spun to fit misinformation is rampant ..

Sorry for the brain dump .. my fingers took over .. :D

One of the nice things about web threads is that you can take/receive what you want and need and just try to ignore what's upsetting. I really appreciate that at least with the "older" threads we've come to care about each other and respect differences of opinions. Don't let negativity keep you from the good stuff.

Yes, perhaps. I have to admit that right now the bigger devices aesthetically hold no appeal. But I've been cautioned by many to expect that to change. Another reason to start simple. :)

A lot of people prefer to start with something that's the size of a cigarette. The eCig (or as I prefer to call it - PV for personal vaporizer) does feel very foreign in the beginning, but it shouldn't take you long to get used to it. MikeE3 and I started out with the kr808 and moved to the eGo mostly because of a better battery. That was over a year ago and you wouldn't believe the devices hubby has now! One of them would be an effective self defense baton!! Just go at your own pace with what feels comfortable to you. We all travel at our own pace and it's all good. Whatever helps to reduce the harm from cigarettes is a victory!!

Agreed....I think it helps to converse with people who have walked in similar shoes and fought some of the same battles.

I have a question for the "older folks" (that's a relative term, if I ever did hear one!).....both of my parents (in their 60s-70s) have smoked for 40+ years. How many of you quit smoking/started vaping at that age? Neither of my parents is especially tech savvy, nor do I feel I have a hope in heck of interesting them in vaping (and I usually only see them once a year in the summer), but I'm curious to know. I met a couple around their age at a local B&M store while purchasing some of my first juices. The gentleman had COPD and was trying to quit, but had obviously been dragged there by his wife. She tested some of the juices (it was also obvious that this was new to them) and chose a few, and offered him to take a hit off her new eGo....he sputtered and coughed and got upset...said if that was what this was like he'd never quit and stormed out of the building. I think about that couple often, wondering if he ever tried it again...for his health's sake, I certainly hope so. Anyhoo, any takers? I know it's impossible to quit unless one wants to, but I'm curious as to whether I can teach an older dog(s) some new tricks :)

I was 62 when I got my first kr808. Thought I was getting it to help me cut down and it turned out to be the day that I smoked my last cigarette! This year we were at a New Years party and a friend asked if she could try my Rider Robust. I forgot to warn her to go easy and she chocked and coughed. How quickly we forget that it is different. If that older guy in the store stormed out after one puff he obviously isn't interested. Hopefully his wife will continue on her own and he'll come to accept it after awhile. Who knows, maybe he'll show up here one day and tell us all about that day in the store! I can definately attest to the fact that my health is better with vaping and as it becomes more acceptable to the general public more people will be willing to give it a try, regardless of age.

Something the size of a cig was my goal, as to perhaps psyche myself out somewhat in the beginning. I just want to quit smoking... however I have to get there.

LOL the bigger ones.. have to say I've seen some interesting devices on this site. And some I am sure that get some looks when out in public. I cannot recall ever seeing anyone "out and about" with a PV. But, then again, perhaps I simply would not have recognized such. I am going to start paying more attention.

I bought an NJOY kit as my first PV experience back when .. paid about $125.00 for it if I recall correctly .. then, one fateful day I was browsing the Web looking for carts as my local source was out .. my mouse somehow hotfooted it's way over to ECF and some helpful members turned me on to the original 510 from Liberty Flights .. and thus the Journey began ..

Although that NJOY kit has collected dust (it is in a plastic baggy) .. for some time now, it worked for me .. for all the poo pooing of NJOY, BLU, etc here on ECF, I continue to believe that the intro "gateway PV" is a vital part of the market .. and maybe enough for some folks ..

I continue to save my little NJOY and it's empty carts (as well as a stash of used Boges that have built up) .. because, hey, you never know ..

But of course, I save 3 foot long 2x4 pieces too .. because, hey, you never know .. ;)

Hi Amy - you came to the right place to see if 'older folks' can make the switch. As many have already said - it can be done and has been done by many people after 40-50 years of smoking. I was 2 PPD+, smoked for 45 years and had my last cig about 15 months ago. It took me a couple months to make the transition complete. My wife on the other hand had her last cig they day our 1st PV kits arrived. Encourage them, but don't push. Good luck.

Yes, Janet .. I know you're right .. but it's against my nature to ignore the upsetting .. in fact, if you've already read something that's upsetting, how can it then be ignored .. ?? ;) ..

I have been a member of a large audio / video / electronics / gadget forum for many many years .. they instituted a complete ban on any political discussion simply because of the rank posters that trolled in on a never ending treadmill .. pushing hate speak and their own personal agendas .. now, I don't think ECF is going to ban this type of thing especially due to the nature of this forum and the political ramifications of the PV ..

I hear those NJOYs have 45 mg of nic! Wow that's a lot even for me.
I still have my Volt kit boxed away, and yes you never know what's
around the corner and you'll be glad it's there.

Nope, nothing faulty with you. Everybody handles it in their own time. The point is, vaping is taking the place of the cigarettes you would have been smoking so you're doing just fine. Hopefully at some point you'll decide you like the vaping better than the cigarettes which is what I've heard from a lot of people. Or maybe you never will, but vaping at least part of the time is definitely a harm reduction tool for you and that's a good thing.

I am 67, my husband 66. We have both smoked for apx 50 years. I was a 2PAD smoker and he was close to that. Saw a Blu commercial in Sept 2012 and bought 4 just to try. Then I bought the Joye Ego-T(VV) kit and we smoked our last analog the last day of the September. I had tried gum, patches, pills-all the devices and groups but never quit for over a few days. Both of us are doing great on e-cigs, no complications or withdrawals or any problem. My only problem is trying every flavor I can (I can't taste many flavors) but that is part of the fun. I would tell anybody who smokes the analogs to try the e-cig. Worked for us.

Hi, Amy....
Yeah, I started smoking in my teens, was heavily addicted to it by my first year in college. Tried through the years to stop my 1-2PAD habit, but never totally succeeded for very long at a time; and always missed smoking when I stopped. The spiel given to me was that, once the nic was out of my system, so would the wanting-a-cig be, too. Maybe it works for some people that way (I refuse to call them liars ... maybe it's just different for different bodies?)... but it never ever did for me. I "quit" for a year once, and there wasn't a single day that I didn't have to fight myself to stay smoke-free because I was always wanting a cigarette.

Couple of years ago, a gamer friend and his wife were "into e-cigs" and urged me to at least try it. So I did. It took me awhile to get off smokes because it took me awhile to find the right combination of juice and delivery system. But, quit I did! And I never have the urge to smoke a cigarette, even when I'm around people smoking. I just whip out my provari vape away ... happy as a kitten with a bowl of cream.

I celebrated my 66th birthday last year. Not everybody is a crotchety oldster who refuses to try new things. People my age aren't "supposed to be computer literate or internet savvy", but just look on this thread at how many are! (We're also not supposed to like mmorpg gaming, but I love it as do many others my age and even older.) The poor guy and his long-suffering wife you ran into in the store aren't "the norm", I hope. I don't believe they are because of the evidence I see around me.

I hope your parents will try it. Their health will improve dramatically when they give up the stinkies.

Wow! $125. Was that for a whole kit with charger and extra carts? Like you, I don't think there's anything wrong if a Blu or NJoy gets somebody going. I just feel bad for the people who try them and think that's all there is and hate it. Some of the advertisements that are not truthful makes me feel bad because I'm afraid people will try them and be disappointed. When we decided to try vaping Mike found ECF - we're so glad he did. We got so much info here and could make up our own minds. So much better than just going with the claims of 1 manufacturer. Plus, we had tons of questions that we were able to find answers to from so many different people.

Wow! I can't wait to hit our local store and ask them about the NJoy they sell. From what I could see it was just a very small package, didn't look big enough to have a charger in it. Also, it will be interesting to find out if the employees even know what it's about.
