Sorry, didn't mean to assume . . . .. . . .. it's just . . . . .. well, you know . . .. the "valheli blitzkreig" has got me a little jumpy.

:D

VH, :p

ha yeah man I'd always check with you on materials for your mod, didn't mean to scare yeah like VH, your going to have to start renting extra storage space soon if he keeps sending you wood at this pace

So far, I know that stabilized amboyna, ancient bog oak, curly maple, elder burls, and maple burls are good for both body and end caps

Too hard: Snakewood, Ironwood, Corrugata (TBD), and Mallee (TBD)

any others? I'll limit my blitzkreig to the workable ones :D

you can add african blackwood to the list, was what I originally considered for the dibby before the koa, but didn't realize how hard it is on tooling until talking to pete about it... honestly I didn't realize how hard the snakewood is too until now, I just read it's even harder than the african blackwood I originally wanted, and it really is among the top 3 hardest woods in the world   so maybe I don't need to stabilize it afterall I guess :p sounds good to me :) here is top 10 hardest woods Top Ten Hardest Woods | The Wood Database

oh yeah, I'm all over that.

bought an old Dodge pickup, doesn't even run. Put it up on blocks in my parking strip and I just toss VH's bundles of wood in the back of it.

Oh, it's blue.

Off the bat, I would think bec. it's cheaper and more durable perhaps?

Guys does someone know why would rob plate his new kits with gold? Isn't beryllium copper resistant enough? I also remember Mundy posting something about gold plating not withstanding the heat. Of course I got one just wondering :D.

Not as a rule. (hole filling). Aesthetically, I treat them like, "it is what it is". I've had where a hole was interfering with a structural element (like, it compromises the area where the magnet is recessed) and did some filling. If the hole were unavoidably in a key area, like the squonk shroud, I pro'ly would just reject the piece (that is, if there wasn't some way to re-orient/work-around).

That's beautiful:)!

Val, I said my mod was fugly because of the way the wood was utilized and the shape of the mod... the wood block it was made from wasn't fugly at all.

The wood on mine was incompletely dyed, so what happened was that the sides are almost devoid of colors from being sanded down below the dye line, with big broad swatches across the face parts front and back, with large knots that had poor placement, that look like a child got a hold of the mod and attacked it with a magic marker randomly. There is zero symmetry, and while there's 1 side with a beautiful pattern, the rest doesn't match it, it makes no sense at all.

Your block makes visual sense. You have that sort of empty area on the one side, but it's got pink to offset the larger areas of grey on the other side. You have knots on every side, not one giant gash with smooth wood elsewhere. The patterning is throughout the wood showing on each face.

And finally, on a dibi, the SHAPE is oval, so there would be no break that would make the mod look like an accidental puzzle, while it's visually clear it's 1 piece of wood.

People are instinctively attracted to balance... ask yourself why that 'ugly dog' was considered ugly. Wrinkly skin? My dog is part sharpei with wrinkly skin, she's one of the most beautiful dogs I've ever seen in my life (not just because she is my dog, I'd think that if she were someone else's dog too). Buggy eyes? Every Chi dog has buggy eyes. A tuft of hair? that's considered cute on most dogs. Crooked teeth? Every Shar Pei has crooked teeth. No fur? There are hairless dogs that are considered very cute. So what's the problem? It's that nothing matches. Why does it MATTER that your clothes match? Why can't you go to work wearing golf shorts, knee high tube socks, running shoes, and a business suit jacket? All these are in your closet?

Your piece looks balanced... it's why you like it:). Find yourself a piece of wood you don't like, then ask yourself why you don't like it. (unless that's this piece, because the grey isn't very wood-like, so looks like a blend of old and new. I like it tho:))

Thanks Gigi. I thought your mod looked nice if it weren't for that rotten scab looking thing (knot?) across it. Hey, if you don't want it I'll take it:laugh:.
My post wasn't at all directed at that. I was looking for someone who actually think the block is fugly .. or just ugly. That'd be my intervention:D

Seriously though, I like this block but I'm a little concerned it might get rejected bec. of the holes.

Ahh... well, I'd pass on this one then. Because that dark streaked hole in the middle would mean that pdib would have to try to get rid of it, or do some careful considering on how to place the mod on it so it doesn't do like mine, make a big ugly hole smack on top:p.

Speaking of which, I already covered up the hole... I figure since it already looked like a magic marker drawing, I'd go for BLING!!!

It's pretty neat looking in real life... looks like one of the new boutique purses:p.

i cannot believe that your love of symmetry has not caused you to go postal on those bottle labels.

It's fair to say there are certain people that like wrinkled skin and tufts of hair (or none at all) and those people explain how guys like Dennis and i get married!
The curly wood was nice - the last one, meh!

That you have a bogger box at all, is a cause for some merriment if you search a few threads in here, where people have not received them and have had to resort to refunds from their credit card companies. Bad for business that.
