Ok, sorry I guess. Where's the main thread? What's a main thread? Link please :)

Ps the squeezing seemed to help. I've been using these now for about two hours and they're working better. I'm using 100% pg, but still... Now I can experiment a bit. Thank you Mello very much

Thank you Yiddleboge. But oy vey, that's kinda crazy, 170 some-odd pages of thread. Hello haystack

I wasn't really suggesting that you read the whole thing ( unless of course you just want to ).... What I do, when I don't want to read it all and I'm just looking for specific info is skim through and pick and choose what you want to read. I'd probably suggest paying attention to posts by badcola or dannoman... and add anyone you already know that posts good info...

Watch bad's vid and probably LordDavon... both have good info. I don't want to list and describe what has been fully described already but look for some of the following...

How to clean... easy peasy stuff IMO
Trim the wick... again a very simple mod that helps with minor feed issues
Raise the inner tube... usually only needed on certain e-juices but good to know
Increasing the size of the wick slots... I didn't see many need this one but you may as well read about it just in case...

I saw only a few don'ts.... don't use an overly large needle to fill... don't fill right side up... don't overfill ( vids cover this )

The Phx bottom coils are my favorite and are the only carto I have been using since they 1st were available. What voltage/watts are you vaping at? For my DIY 60/40 (pg/vg) juice 5.2-5.4 Watts with the 2.6-2.8ohm ones. The most I have had to do is trim the wicks. I have had a few that tasted burnt no matter what I tried and I just tossed them. I have not had any "bad" ones out of the newest batch which do not have the "primer" on them. Since the newest ones arrive dry I always prime the coil with the juice I will be using by dissassembling and dropping several drops on the coil and wick. I also adjust the coil a bit if needed. It is important to make sure the fill hole flap returns to covering the fill hole. Also make sure the gasket thing is firmly pressed over the metal air tube.

In my experience I find that 4.2 volts is a bit too high for these bottom coil cartos, even the 2.6-2.8 ohm versions seem to wick too slowly to keep up with that much heat without fiddling with the wicking or modding the space the wick sqeezes through. I find they wick the best at a lower voltage, I generally stick to 3.7, I also find the lower ohm phoenixes just seem to perform better than the higher ohm for some reason.

i started using the 1.5 XL's today for the first time. In my experience, it performed pretty well on my Ego Twist at 3.2-3.4 volts (aside from a couple of burnt taste hits at random times). If i set it to anything over 3.4 volts I get that burnt taste consistently. (Using the 2.4-2.6 ohm version w/ 100% PG). I also tried it on the KGO and get the burnt taste on every hit so I went back to the twist at the 3.2-3.4 range.

Thats wierd. I think it really depends on the juice also though. Some juices i can vape at 4.5+ and some i wont even go over 3.5 with the phoenix

My first suggestion to anyone having issues with dry hits is to take it apart and put it back together. I'm not 100% sure why it works but if something is actually in there too tight, it can constrict the wicks. 70pg/30vg is perfectly fine on these unless you have one of those that aren't wicking well. I haven't come across one like that, but I take mine apart, tube included, and clean them before I even use them. I've trimmed the wicks on one of them, just to see what happened even though it was working well. Didn't seem to change anything for me, but it was working well to begin with.

Now, as for lifting the cup, it's a delicate procedure and I wouldn't recommend it unless you had a few backups and nothing else seemed to work so you'd be retiring it to the carto graveyard anyway. Here's how I do it, and credit for this goes to someone on the giant phoenix thread: I clean off my syringe really well, especially the needle. A paperclip would work just fine, though. I put the needle up the carto's fanny (i.e. the hole in the middle of the connector post) at an angle. I very carefully and gently push it in until I get some resistance, which I assume is the bottom edge of the cup. I push just a bit. Then I take it all the way out and repeat the process on the other side as well as the top and bottom, removing it each time. The reason I remove it is because just spinning it will likely snap the wires. You have a much better chance if you go straight for it. I continue like this until I get the rim of the cup flush with the bottom of the slots the wicks come out of.

If I get dry hits on one, I usually clean it off and see if the cup has been pushed down over time. This does seem to happen, because I've witnessed it on mine. I don't know why it would, though. Vacuum pressure, maybe? Anyway, I also use those little Dentek brushes you can find in the oral hygiene section of a store when I clean the coil. They're like tiny bottle brushes with bristles at the end. After I've washed the coil under hot running water, I use the brush on the coil gently to help remove any gunk stuck on it. I also use it to brush the coil off after I've dry burned it to remove any ash.

Don't know if this will help ya or not. Someone else would have to come in here to give you info on how to thin the wicks.

After about 2 weeks of use, my 3ml Phoenix was getting consistant E1's on the Provari. No idea why - but I just took it completely apart - it was super easy to get apart and very intuitive. I will be making a new wick in about 5 minutes - had some 100% cotton yard I purchased after reading the wicking thread in the modding forum and I have kanthal. I just washed the wick and as luck would have it - I am running my weekly batch of dehydrated fruit. I put the thread in the dehydrator for a few minutes after the wash. I will report back in a few!

if you feel the need to thin the wicks: take the tube off the base and with fingernail clippers (or sharp naiis if you got'em) pull off 1 or 2 strings of wick from either end.....but remember: the less wicking material you have the shorter puffs you can take without the lovely dry burn taste. i believe the amount of wicking material is perfect as it is.

In the end, these seem too inconsistent for me. When they work well, I love them. But not knowing whether or not I am going to get that terrible burnt taste is not worth it. I'd rather refill poly fill Carto's a few times a day than fiddle with these. I am glad I tried them out, but it's just not working out for me personally.

My experience with the pheonix goes as follows. I got them in and immediately filled one via the directions. It was AMAZING! I seriously thought the flavor was so clean, no leaking, excellent vapor and throat hit, and the vapor had a nice warmness to it. I then filled all 4 other ones with juice and the next three I tried tasted burnt, what a bummer. The last one had the same greatness to it. I did tinker with the three and I was able to fix two of them but I still had one that I had gone to far on I guess. So they are kind of like sex I suppose, when its good its really good. When its not its better then nothing.

Fantastic analogy!

After more than a day I'm still frustrated with my 3ml because I randomly still get the burnt taste - and it's bad - and so i cannot trust it. I'm having more luck with the 1.5 ml Phoenix's. Again, thanks for the squeezing tip. Between dry pulls and squeezing I am able to get consistent big flavorful draws through these. I'll attempt tinkering with the insides at some point but I really do enjoy the flavor of my juice through these more than anything else at present.

so an update to my experience. Looks like it was just a bad carto. The 2nd phoenix I've used with the same juice and it runs like a champ at 4 volts. Ive been vaping on it all morning and no dry hits or burnt taste. I still find it odd that the last one would only work well from 3.2-3.4 volts. maybe someone can solve the mystery. hopefully my 3rd one won't be like the first

The Phoenix XL BC's were designed more for the lower voltage in mind... in the main thread for these, most reported they only worked well up to 4.2v at the top most end and the majority liked them closer to the 3.3-3.7v range. I didn't pay attention to what the 3ml version folks where saying since they weren't a size I was interested in ( at that size, give me a real tank instead )

Wait, if these are for lower voltage, then what's best for, say, a KGO? While not a HV device, it's unregulated 3.6-4.2, so a fresh charge could easily create the heat required for a burnt taste. On a side note, I've had two just decide to randomly leak all of their juice out, no clue why, but the shame was the flavor on the ones that leaked was amazing prior to the gasket spilling out gobs of liquid.
