I wouldn't just take a look at it & take something pokey & gently press on the wick at the end of the coil. You shouldn't have a gap. For the wick discoloration if you see any gently remove.

I see a lot of people over think this whole thing. Your beginning wick needs to be larger than the coil inner diameter but slide through with some resistance. If it vapes well, leave it alone and stop worrying about. If it shrinks away you will get the nasty taste and maybe burnt throat of not enough.
I bought a roll of what I assume what your looking for a long time ago in our local pharmacy. The stuff I bought is thin with a top layer that looks like a huge roll of that expensive square cotton pads but in a huge 1 pound roll, I think I paid 6 bucks. Its called Mansfield Absorbent Roll. I still have 99.8% of the roll left since my cotton stage of wicking was mighty brief before I went into hemp fiber then rayon.
I did a little searching in this thread and it looks like you don't really need to clean the wick to get the longevity out of it. Do you guys just swab the coil with a qtip from time to time?

I use 90% VG with 10% distilled water. I don't do squat. After a month or so when the coil gets crusty, I yank the wick and dry burn the coil. Brush the ash with an old toothbrush and rewick with rayon right out of the box.
I've never heard that there could be a "prep" for rayon like all the songs and dances they use to do with cotton and hemp fiber. I never prepped nothing, tried to boil cotton balls once and it became a pile of YUK so I never did it again. With the hemp fiber, since I had only a sandwich baggie of it I treasured it and didn't want to waste it trying to cleanse it. My biggest concern with rayon is to make sure the top is sealed cause with 500 feet I might be able to give my grandchildren some and don't want it dusty.
I don't do any cleaning, I just vape. I'm lazy like that. It's nothing to get 100+ ml per wicking so I just dryburn and rewick when needed.
I have rinsed coils wicked with rayon before but never had the patience to wait for drying. I just refilled the tank and vaped the water out. Takes about 10 pulls before getting good vapor again. In the end it wasn't worth the hassle for me, it only extended the lifespan of the rayon a little.
If I have the correct density in the coil and the tails thinned properly rayon lasts so long without maintenance that fooling around with q-tip cleaning, brushing and/or rinsing just isn't worth the trouble for me.

ditto. if I want to switch flavors I just switch. i use rayon in my tester rda and almost never vape unflavored between tests. I have 21 testers right now and the only time I have vaped unflavored to cleanse the wicks between a test recently is after the RF SC Nutmeg which is really potent at 1%.

Plus me. Emphasis on LAZY. I think it's enuf hassle to fill a tank.
