Hi JeremyR. I've been putting rayon through the coil while holding coil in place with my thumbnail until I can barely get the rayon through. The coil would definitely distort if I didn't hold it together. When I've examined the coil after the flooding, I haven't seen any gaps between the rayon and the coil. The only way I can remove the rayon is by dry burning it until it dries out a bit.

I've been trying the suggestions one by one but so far the only way I've been able to prevent flooding the Engine Nano was by using that method I linked earlier but now I'm getting a burnt taste. Not sure what else to do. I'm gonna focus the rest of my efforts on the Merlin rta. I've had more success with that tank despite the annoying leaking problem. Either way, I do realize that rayon itself is not the problem. I gotta learn how to wick properly.

Thanks. I'll try a 3 mm coil next time. Some people in the Engine Nano thread were using those smaller coils because they were getting better flavor but they were probably all using cotton.

The tails have been bunched up like cotton. I'll try to make them smoother. They should just be hanging straight down right?

Good to hear.

Yeah bunching will stop the flow. Think waterfalls. A nice cascading wick. Not too long cut to just right length is best.

Yeah bunching will stop the flow. Think waterfalls. A nice cascading wick. Not too long cut to just right length is best.

I saw that waterfall looking wick in a video of wicking a Kayfun eons ago and used it and never had any problems. Took that waterfall into my subtanks and again no problems at all. I use mostly 28 gauge and some 26 and 28/32 claptons. ohm ranging from .5 to 1.6ohm subtank builds but my coils are spaced, no contact coils for me. I also wick my Merlin the same waterfall method. TFV4 I just couldn't wick it at all without burning the wick after several vapes so I don't bother dealing with its frustration....shelved
I also never set my wick dry into the juice area, never understood why some just stuff then poke it down, there is no control to where the wick is going to end up. I juice my wick then with a blade under the wick and dental pic flatten it out some to look like a fan, cut so the wick is straight, tie in all the loose hairs I find and cut off some of the corners. Keeping the wick straight, no bunching or stuffing it into a port or a well is key like Jeremy said. You also need a slight hump after the coil so don't cut the rayon too short or you will expose the top of the last wrap of the coil setting the wick into place. Length of the tail is also important, little too long is better than too short, the slight hump allows you some room to play.
Merlin has a roundish well so same fan and waterfall but with manipulation I make the wick round and work it into the well without loosing the straightness of the threads and tuck it in with love and care, push from the back of the wick to ensure the juice hole is totally covered(this is where my dental pick is my most used vape tool). Depending on how big the coil is I have had to put a gob of rayon behind to ensure the wick stays to the front so it won't leak. I'm vaping a merlin I just wicked with a 4 wrap 28/32 clapton .6ohm rayon coil, 3mm inside diameter at 25 watts. I can hit it hard and have nothing but great vape, no flood, spitting, dry hitting or leaking but it seeping ......we won't get into that.

Juice of course can't be overlooked. If your vaping high pg you will need a lot more wick at the juice ports, in turn less thinning.

But really the thinning concept is best viewed in a Dripper.

High flow RTA's load it up full wick cut the right length, work from there, you can always trim as you go till you hit the right amount.

Remember rayon transports liquid on its outside. Evident in how it goes completely dry, the liquid isn't actually inside the fiber but on the outside of the fibers and in between them.

Where exactly are you putting that gob of rayon

After you set the wick into the Merlin well push it forward some, depending the size of the coil too how much rayon you can use to cover the juice hole, you just ball a bit of juiced rayon and put it behind the set wick in the juice well to add a bit of bulk. I had one of my Merlin builds leak and saw a opening in the juice hole through the glass and assumed the wick moved or shifted, maybe not long enough tail but the ball solved it and I was able to vape it till the coil toasted.
Something else with the Merlin, its a PIA to take the glass part to bits and I broke the glass getting it apart cause every time you fill and put the top cap back on it tighten it some and mine glued together. I now put a drop of juice onto the top and bottom orings then spin the glass and also a bit of juice on the little oring on the chimney piece. This time its still a hassle but did come apart.

Remember rayon transports liquid on its outside.

I read that somewhere and it answers to rayons shrinking as per say but more settles onto itself and compacts. Cotton fills the whole fiber and thus expands

I see. I would try that out but you said it didn't eliminate the annoying seeping issue :( I'm hoping the Merlin RTA I get tomorrow will be a good one.

Here is hoping that you get one of the non seeping Merlin's. I solved the seeping on my two by giving them away. ;)

I'm late to the party as always... ;)

A quick question @cigatron. I have some Nifethal 70 (24g & 26g) inbound from Kidney Puncher and without searching through the big TC beyond Ni200 thread, can it be dry burned? Also, is the default CSV from Steam Engine good to use with the KP NiFe 70?

Not sure about the NiFe 70 alloy, haven't tried any. That "TC Beyond" thread is hard to search through, good luck.

I don't know if you read the 3000+ posts in the Merlin thread but ya getting a Merlin that doesn't seep is going to be like a lottery win. I did quite a extensive tinkering with the merlins to try to stop the seep, some pics of it all taken apart and a short video in how to break the base apart. I don't want to rain of your parade but the merlin having a 2 piece pressfit base means that with the base heating and cooling its going to eventually begin to separate and then seep or in my case 1 of my merlins didn't have a oring inside the base, that one seeped down the door of my box mod and left a square ring on my desk overnight. As long as you either use the merlin on a solid pin hitter that has a space or back it off a adjustable pin and not have it sit directly onto the hitter if its going to sit for any length of time, its too wipe off without damaging the hitter.
I just use the 1 merlin and the other is all taken apart cause I don't have a oring to replace the one that was missing.
I'll say it produces a great vape, super easy to build on and it could have been a awesome atty...BUT

Which tanks are you using?

My wife uses a kanger subtank mini with the RBA. I build her 1.6ohm 28/32 clapton coil and haven't heard her complain since we got them about dryhits or leaking, she won't vape another single wire build again. I use the subtank as my take to work atty usually on top a provari. Those subtanks have performed flawlessly for us, so I don't need to find another better atty. I have a kayfun or two sitting in front of me(along with about a dozen spares)and now until I get fed up with it, a Merlin. I do have several older attys like protank 1 and 2, fogger, a magma dripper and a couple gennies and drippers that I don't use. The TFV4's has dished me nothing but aggravation but I once in a while try to wick it just incase but it craps the bed and gets shelved again.

The Aromamizer Supreme, Aromamizer Plus, OBS Crius Plus, iJoy EXO and Geekvape Ammit are all in daily regular rotation here.

I see they are coming out with a dual coil Ammit version that can be used in single coil, has a postless deck and 6ml extension. Look's like it could be a winner for sure!

That Ammit looks cool. I was looking into the Aromamizer but I just ordered an iJoy EXO RTA. Should be here in a few days Crom Willing. In the mean time, I can deal with the Merlin seepage. And I'm going to battle the Engine Nano a little more on my days off. I think I'm close to getting it wicked properly.
