After reading just about every major cart mod thread except for this one I came up with just about the same thing last night. Instead of a thin straw I cut open, reduced the circumference, and notched up a larger McD's straw. And while I'm excited to get myself some aquaclear or blue foam and try again I just used the stock polyfill and it's worked great!

Give it a try using materials just as instructed - I guarantee it'll blow the polyfil you're using out of the water! The PTB Made Easy is even better, if you don't want to fuss with refills.

sorry don't have time now to read through all of this. wondering can I use the straws that you use for the blue foam dart mod? and does this work better with PG or VG? have to order some tomorrow, got VG last time and maybe thats why things aren't working as well for me.

I believe that uses a coffee stirrer straw and that is too small. I use bendy straws from Walmart or any grocery store. they are 5mm or about 1/4" in diameter.

how do you guys prevent the plug from being pushed down into the straw?

Make sure the straw isn't too long and the scrubbie/buff puff is the exact same width and length (or just a tiny smidge bigger) of the cart opening.

yes, uses the small straws, I thought it said at the beginning we could use those. so basically normal straw and slice it down the middle if need be.

some people tried using one coffee straw and it wasn't stable enough to hold the plug. Some people tried two straw and while it worked ok, it didn;t wick very well - it "held" the liquid.

A McDonald's straw is too big for a 510 and needs to have a lengthwise piece cut out to make it narrower. A grocery store straw is just the right size for a 510 and needs no cutting - it just gets squeezed a bit to put it into the cart, but that helps hold it in place. :)

thanks. I dont have any scrubbie/buff puff. I have the aquarium blue foam. Will it work if I just cut a cube and stuff to top? lol thanks

Just trying this now with a cheapie green scouring pad. The ones we had lying around were glued to a sponge, but the pad pulled off easily, and I cut off the glue remaining on the pad. A quick check under the microscope doesn't show any abrasive amongst the fibers, however the fibers in addition to being woven together appear to be slightly glued together. I can't see this stuff being picked up by the liquid, although it wouldn't be that pleasant if the plug ended up getting hot.

(I tried to attach an image of the glue between the fibres here, but apparently i need to make more posts until I'm allowed to...)

Seems to work fine enough though, I'm keen to find out how long a cart will last for me now.

I have found that this is the ideal cart mod for the 510, mostly due to the simpler shape. It is easy to cut a rectangle and nip off the corners. On my 901 atty's it is a different story and I have resorted back to blue foam on those. What I really need is a set of punches shaped like the cart opening so I could just make a bunch of either kind quickly. Having nice sharp straight edges makes all the difference and is beyond my scissor skills.

I'll give that a go. Was using with out the vents, the delivery of
the liquid wasn't very consistent. Sometimes it was fine and
other times I'd get a flooded atty. It might have something to
do with using the polyfill as a plug too. Maybe I should try the
blue foam......I just keep reading ppl saying it breaks apart and
gets into the atty, don't wanna melt it and be vaping blue foam
also!!! yuck

Tried the zfm and had no luck with that I'd either get a nice few
draws and then flooded atty or it wouldn't wick and I'd be dry.
Kinda gave up on that one. sheesh you'd think the manufactures
would be able to design a perfect cart!! :p

Yeah, it's not designed to work with the poly. Try the blue ScotchBrite pad or try the http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/cartridge-mods/52430-ptb-straw-mod-ptb-made-easy.html - that's the one I use now. It's a lot less fiddling and works well. Plus you'll still get use out of those straws! ;)

I found the grey 3m artificial steel wool pads to be ideal. They are tough enough to hold together and be reused multiple times. The plug stays relatively stiff and doesnt cave into the straw. Also no funky taste. If there is an abrasive inherent in the fiber it is very fine and I haven't had any problems associated with it's use. The non-scratch pads were too flimsy and structurally uneven.

TWalker - Don't notch and cut the straw too much. If you cut notches too big or cut notches in the sides of the straw, it lessens the wicking action and has the opposite effect (it's been tested.)

The straw does take up some liquid space, but the trade off is that is uses up MORE of the liquid between refills. What good is having more liquid in the cart if only 1/2 of it gets wicked to the atty before you have to top off?

tcbakerkw - ANY non-scratch scrub pad would work or try the Buff Puff pad.
