well... you can either keep trying with mesh, or you could do a silica build which is far more forgiving. It took me LOTS of tinkering to finally get the mesh setups correct, but I love it now. Trial and error.
What # mesh are you using? what awg and type of wire? What are you aiming for as your resistance level? All things to keep in mind.

30g kanthal or nichrome?
A 4/5 wrap of 30 kanthal will give you about 1.3-1.5
With 30 nichrome, you're looking more like a 6/5 wrap for the same

I was looking thru this thread, & thought I would post my latest Richman setup. 7x9 Stainless Steel cable, topped with 400x400 SS mesh, & wrapped with kanthal (A) ribbon. Mad clouds, & great flavor.

This one is 30g kanthal @ 1.4 ohm
You oxidize the whole wick or go pulse method? Long wick or short?
I only torch the half of the wick that the coil goes on. I make them approx 1.5" long then trim if needed.
okay so is the wick not supposed to touch the bottom of the tank are or the sides of the wick hole?
Mine was sitting on the table next to my Roller in 350 mode, and the Poldiac in 500 mode when the family came in. They each thought it was a new "Mod". I had to set it on my mods before they believed me that it was an Atty. lol. It does look sharp, I'll give it that. I like the looks of it, but I'm not sure I'll get around to setting it up and vapig it, because it's so dang heavy. I'll probably PIF to my weight lifting neighbor. Will see.
My wicks sit tightly in the wick hole. I push it all the way down til it touches the bottom, then pull it up just a hair. Touching the wick hole has never been an issue for me, but my wicks are oxidized where it touches.
Xobeloot, Thanks for putting my pic up there. I thought that link would do it. I used 0.6mm X 0.07mm "A" type kanthal ribbon. Bought it on ebay, they have type D & type A. I don't know the difference, I think there is more iron in one of them, but I have been told that type A is better for PV coils. 
oh, & I torched the entire wick. That's the way I learned to build them, plus if you use tape when you cut your SS cable (to keep it from coming apart), it burns off the adhesive.
